Educate me, Please!!

I am an almost virtual Luddite when it comes to electronics. I have a PC with DSL which I never use (the PC, that is) and a laptop with a wireless card (which I use all the time). We will be building a new home this year and I need to know whether I can get rid of my PC if we have the house wired for "wireless" and still have access to the internet through my DSL carrier. If so, can I get rid of the modem, also? And, what does that mean and what other applications can be used in a house wired for "wireless."

You can install a wireless router and still have DSL service. You may occasionally have to hook up to the wireless router with a wire to change some security settings, etc., but that should be a rarity. You would not need the PC at all. I'm not sure of what you're calling the "modem". There is the box which connects to the wall; many people call that the "modem" and you will need to keep that or you won't get DSL service.

Other applications? Well, there are wireless music/video servers or devices which will route either digital files or even Internet radio/video to your stereo or TV. There are some digital cameras now which can communicate via Wi-Fi (your wireless) to store pictures (though, truth be told, that's more of a gimmick than a real advance). There's VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), which allows you to make voice phone calls over the Internet, which requires a fast connection like DSL or cable.

Keep in mind, however, that there is a limit to DSL bandwidth, and usually information you send to the Internet moves far more slowly than what you receive from the Internet. Another consideration is that wireless signals have a somewhat limited range, so you either need to make sure there is enough signal where you want it (this can be achieved; it's mostly a matter of a little money) and/or that you secure the wireless signal from snoopers and neighbors who might "see" your wireless and piggyback onto it or try to get into your computer(s).

Yet another consideration is that there are different "flavors" of wireless (typically following what is called the "802.11 standard"). There's 802.11a (rarely found in homes); 802.11b (the first popular residential wireless); 802.11g (much faster than b); and -- soon -- 802.11n, which promises to be faster and have an even better signal, but which hasn't been nailed down as a standard yet, so it's IMHO a little early to buy a "Wireless-n" router. The only thing to think about there is if you have a lot of devices connecting to the wireless router -- most routers will slow down every device to the speed of the slowest 802.11 that any of them use. This may be an issue if you're streaming video wirelessly and someone connects to your network with an old 802.11b wireless card. This shouldn't be a showstopper, though.

No, I am telling you to take 2 feet off the top now. Others are saying cut it back to 2 feet in spring. I don't do that. I never cut my roses back that far. I cut dead growth off in late winter and shape the bush and usually need to take off 2-3 feet. I think you need to take some off now because it is growing leggy and scrawny, barren of foliage and bloom. Now, take 2 feet off the top, fertilize it, water it, mulch a bit (but not too close to the trunk). Then you can continue to care for it and then around Labor Day, give it some organic fertilizer or 8-8-8 and see your fall flush. You may/may not want to cut it back to 2 feet in late winter/early spring as suggested. I don't but some of my fellow rosarian friends do and their roses are prettier than mine. I just cannot stand to butcher that much at once. My husband has done that to some of our roses, and they looked great and got new basal breaks; the roses were gorgeous. Me, not so much of a cutter and wish perhaps I was. ;-) Ryan, just water now and take some top growth off, wait for some new reddish growth, give it some organic fertilizer or 8-8-8, keep watering and give it some fertilizer again around Labor Day and watch for your blooms to be more than you expect and larger in mid to late October. Then come back next February/March with a picture of the rose at that point and let someone direct you about pruning. You might get addicted to this stuff. I hope so. I think you will love it. P.S. Hmmmm - I've never had a problem with this plant from cuttings. I've started many for friends in perlite or the gritty mix, and I really can't remember a failure ...... but always err on the side of caution if you've had any kind of poor luck with cuttings in the past. I paint the fresh wounds of almost all plants in containers, but not those in the landscape, and especially those of succulents. If you don't, you can count on the wound drying out & shriveling, affecting the appearance and location of the new sprouts. If I hadn't sealed the wound on this Aeonium, chopped just above the soil line, I wouldn't have been able to get the even distribution of new shoots to come from the cambium AT the wound site. The top of the plant (at the truncation) would have collapsed on itself due to dessication, and an ugly scar would have resulted - + the shoots would have originated much more randomly on the stem stub. I understand & agree with the fact that sealing wounds on woody material in the landscape is useless at best, and counterproductive at worst, but small plants in containers close wounds much faster if you paint them with waterproof wood glue or wait just until they dry and smear petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or Preparation-H on the wound. There may be scoffers but let me say, please, that I've used this trick on so many plants and have seen the difference in so many wounds when I haven't used it, that I'm absolutely certain of its effectiveness. Hi blessed, sure thing! My kitchen was a complete DIY project and we didn't know much about kitchen design at the time; I joined GW about halfway through. I used recycled cabinets, so there were a number of things we had to tailor to fit our space. I had a base cabinet with lazy susan in it that we used for the base of the peninsula 'L' by the stove. Rather than keep the susan, we tore it out and built a sink into that space instead, using the innards of the corner of the cab for plumbing and the rest of it for storage: We've got a full-size batchfeed Insinkerator Evolution in there, too. I had initially envisioned opening the cabinet from behind, so that the plumber could access pipes from the other side of the peninsula, but he had no problem crawling in to do the plumbing from the front. So we built a bookshelf along the back (forgive the mess): It's not the absolutest ergonomickest sink placement, because it's a bit far from the countertop edge, but we're long-armed and it's really worked well for us. It's got perfect access to the stove without crossing the kitchen to the big sink. We probably use that 24" counterspace between the prep sink and stove most of all the spaces in the entire kitchen. I also love that the sink is accessible from both sides -- if a guest is wandering in from the deck door on the other side of the peninsula, they can grab a glass of water or wash hands without having to enter the active kitchen space. In the summer I keep glasses and handtowels on the bookshelf below.

We use covers I got from Lowes, I don't recall the brand but tend to think it's the Garden Treasures line. Ours are a tan, canvas-like material, elastic sewn in at the bottom + rope ties. I have a glider and rocking chair with cushions. Every evening, or when not in use, we put the covers on and tuck the elastic under the legs of the glider to secure it down in case of wind. For the rocker we loop the rope to the legs to help hold it, the rocker cover is actually for a chair so the fit at the bottom is a little funky. Never had a cover blow off, never had soaked cushions. Sometimes cushions might feel damp due to humidity from rain and in that case exposing to air & sun (while still on the glider or rocker) gets rid of that really fast. I didn't pay a lot, I want to say around $25 for the larger glider cover, a little less for the chair cover. Well worth it, we've been using them for about six or seven years now. I saw in one review someone sprays scotch guard on theirs at the beginning of every season. A good idea that I might do this year simply due to age in order to help boost effectiveness. No rips or tears, even despite a giant pup who likes to sneak a nap on the covered rocker when he thinks no one is watching ;) Here is a link that might be useful: Furniture Covers
