Gardens for children--ideas?
Comments (11)Those got derailed by the baby and an emergency bathroom remodel! (When it rains downstairs every time you take a bath, something needs to be done.) She ended up being super-duper-amazingly high intensity and hasn't gotten any easier until this summer. I decided to start with the front beds of the house and the driveway garden instead of starting something new--places that were already landscaped but sorely neglected. The front of the house has these extra wing-walls added to it and a side-loading garage attached, so it's 107' long. Because of the severe lack of windows facing the front, I've made the beds 10' deep so I can get some substantial (if very upright) conifers in there. I have 7 trees to plant this weekend and the "planted patio" (I think I just lost a contract, so the real patio will have to wait) of ajuga repetens for a little space I have staked out for chairs to sit in while watching the kids tear around the yard. :-) I also have to do my final adjustments now that I have stakes and twine to the new front stepping stones--there was no walk at all when we moved in. In the driveway bed, I'm going to fill in an insane curve in our driveway with gravel (it will probably last for the next 10 years), finish ripping out the last of the yews (deer-chewed, overgrown, and unattractive), plant some 14 holly "Nellie Stevens", plant all the daffodil bulbs I divided, divide all the the muscari, and take out 3 more individual trees and a clump of unhealthy birch that was put in a bad place. Then I'm going to plant a row of hydrangeas and maybe a couple MORE understory trees....and then I'll have finished the driveway beds, which are about 120' long and 10' wide on one side and 5' on the other. Then I'll keep picking away at the front bed while I haul a huge amount of "top soil" that ended up being little better than fill dirt from the back to part of the yard where soil quality doesn't really matter. Oh, and today, I'm going to finish staining the back deck I had powerwashed. It's "only" 20x60'. I'm also going to fix the chainsaw. *sighs* After that, I'll be able to concentrate on the kid-specific gardens and the veggie beds. ACK!!!!!!! I've been working in the yard 20+ hours/week for 6 weeks now, with DH joining me for about 6 hours on the weekends. I've still got a long way to go, but I'm moving in the right direction slowly. I'll post pictures as soon as anything looks like everything! Right now, I'm splitting between stuff that costs money and stuff that takes a lot of time and effort. The stuff that's mostly time and effort really doesn't look very exciting. I've got 19 shrubs and 1 tree in the front already, but it still looks mostly naked as I've got whole swathes still completely without any anchoring shrubs. It'll look enormously better with 10 more key shrubs in. Right now, it still looks quite nude, even with 3 boxwood and a picea taller than me!...See Morethings that move that shouldn't
Comments (17):0) :0) Man, I hope you all feel better real soon, 'cause I KNOW I shouldn't be laughing this much after reading this...sorry...teeheehee...(I really DO feel for you with the inner ear problems). So was this 15# bag moving or was it a vision? And Sandy, not only do you attract the bizarre, but I want a drain that should work so well! :0) ROTFLOL! And there's the earth moving, and FTM running around in her undies, while Romeo runs off like a streak... :0) Later FTM says to Brenda "things are moving that shouldn't! you only think it is you :)" "Oh...maybe you like that buzz?" says Cathy. (Sorry, but reading it after the fact is too funny!) LOL! Careful girls, someone may find out about your 'condition'! REALLY, I am sorry, but I'm still giggling! Comments (69)The ones who are "cringing" at polluting the earth with pesticides......you must be from California. I promise you the earth will not fall off its axis nor will it cause you another quake if you take the ants out with a chemical. You allow the government to pollute millions with a flu vaccine that contains harmful ingredients. You probably are first in line to get it. Your government produces radioactive materials and your worried about a chemical killing an aggravating pest. Your oceans are polluted with gas, oil, fecal matter dumped from heads on boats. Yet dont spray a chemical for ants? I'm so sick of tree hugger mentality. Show me action instead of reaction "words" to problems. How about you get out and plant trees to replenish what loggers have cut to build your table, couch, chair, doors, and house. Tell the gov to stop polluting your earth. OR ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THIS IS LIFE.we are the top of the food chain as long as we use materials that God gave us the intelligence to produce. I will never support your beliefs as long as you are the type of people who tell others ...you can't put a barrel to catch rainwater coming off your roof to be used as you wish! GOD MADE THAT WATER! I understand that aquifers need to be replenished. But does the rainwater caught by the few actually hurt the water supply? It's a 55 gallon barrel. And it doesn't catch 1/3 of that after a rain. So spray for your ants, put out granules to kill or run those pesky ants, termites, roaches, spiders,Grubbs, beetles, etc to your neighbors yards, who use natural deterrents(vinegar and water). Sorry I'm so harsh but by gosh sometimes you fight fire with fire. Death to ants...lol...See MoreNew Renovation!!!!
Comments (23)Do you have local cab makers/woodworking shops in your area? Look at Barker Cabinets (West Coast company) for ready to assemble cabs that can be shipped to your door...they get some love here along with Ikea cabs for budget friendly remodels. The best piece of advice I got here was “one’star’ to a kitchen.” When you decide what that is...floor, counters, backsplash, cabs....then everything has to harmonize with that “star” instead of fighting each other for visual “limelight.” The worse thing you can do is pick things you like that do not play nice with each other. Your insp. photo is an example of all elements playing nice with each other. My DH really responded to and took to heart that shared advice, it helped quell his tendency to want to push for all the strong-patterned floors, cabs, counters that he liked as isolated elements. He even quoted it back to me a few times...lol! Look at LVT planks/tiles for a good-looking durable floor. Do not give in on the one level island for all the reasons others have cited and the fact that they are not user-friendly/comfortable. Spend a lot of time sharing pictures of kitchens with your husband....a lot of men love strong patterns, dark stains, and thus wood like oak; but if I could change my DH’s vision of “kitchen,” there is hope for other women! My DH hates change because he cannot envision what he cannot see. It took 6 months of strategically sharing light, bright kitchens that I found with comments about what I liked, sharing before and after kitchen posts from this site, and also occasionally sharing dark, heavy looking oak kitchens with comments about how heavy looking they were to accomplish my goal. He probably got really tired of looking at kitchen photos, but I accomplished my goal....didn’t have to fight about replacing my oranged-oak cabs with new oranged-oak cabs. He came around and embraced painted cabs. Good luck! Finally, ask your questions here....the answers can be ammo....worked for me!...See More- 22 years ago
