Vanilla Beans

I am out. Went to the local grocery store and their vanilla beans were $10 each! Yikes!

I know I can get them cheaper at Penzey's, but I recall someone here (Diana55, maybe?) had a good source for vanilla beans at a really good price.

Anyone remember?

I got them from Vanilla Products USA and they are great they also sell through eBay much fresher and a lot cheaper than getting them from the store.

Hi I quit growing vanilla due to the rampant growth,Seems to be necessary never got a flower until round 10 feet of growth even then it was a shy bloomer. I found the variagated form less hardy in all respects to the green plainifolia. They are very easy to root by almost any method but if you really want flowers you'll have to allow it to run rampant . As long as it's warm and humid they are happy.. My main objection was they took up way to much space. gary

I can tell you from experience. Unfortunately, I made custard based "vanilla" the other night. I even put the bean in with the seeds while heating it. And never remembered to put in the vanilla extract. It was really good frozen custard, but it had very very little vanilla flavor. Or course, it could be that I just like it to have a much more pronounced vanilla flavor, so I'll stick with my "both" recipe.

The stems are brittle, so be careful to not bend them too tightly. Although, if they do break you'll have another plant. Some of mine are up over 20 metres in trees and it took a while before I found out they were flowering up there. Later I planted some on a much smaller tree stump (about 3 metres tall) . They sprawled around the top a bit and flowered at that height. Some I've got on a 1.5 metre stump haven't flowered at all. Whatever height they need, they also need to sprawl and hang down a bit. If they've still got room to go up they'll keep climbing and not flower. I did see a comment on a forum once (and only once) of there being dwarf varieties, but I don't know how accurate it was. Or maybe they were thinking of a different species of vanilla.

Lindac, I make my own so I donÂt know but the beans are very fresh and they come vacuum sealed. I ordered a package of 10 of each kind and still have one package I have never opened from last year and it still looks good.

I've never bought from Vanilla Products so I can't speak to their quality but I've purchased from Saffron.com a couple times and have been very happy. I got a half pound last time and I'm still working through it (after sharing some with Deanna and mom)!

I have been most happy with Arizona Vanilla Company products. Their beans are the very best I've had. You can see them on ebay at the link, but they also have a separate website under ArizonaVanilla.com.

I have been getting them off e-Bay, cheap and really fresh. When I make vanilla extract, I use at least 25 per bottle (fifth of vodka).

Thanks, everyone! After comparing all the suggestions above I just placed an order with Vanilla Products USA.

For about $2 more than I could have gotten a dried up single bean at the grovery store, I am getting over 30 fresh, moist beans!

I ordered the assortment pack. Since I am not terribly familiar with the different varieties and grades of vanilla beans, I thought the assortment would be a good place to start.
