Do other people's crafts pressure you ?

I visit a couple of the best craft forums there are on

the web. ( Some of you visit the same ones ! )

People post their projects ...... I'm totally

in AWE .... everything I See I want to make. I save the pics and instructions ,thinking someday I'll do it ...

" someday " never seems to come and I get so disappointed in myself. DO you do that too ? Want to make everything you see ? Can you find the time ? It HAS to be a sickness with a name .........."craft envy" ?? LOL ....

I just want to know if I'm the only one .......

Oh, I have a SERIOUS problem. I tell everyone it's "Compulsive Crafting"...I do make lots of things, but there's hundreds more I want to make,too. I finish almost all of them,and I have boxes and bins of finished crafts. I also have boxes and boxes of things saved to make other ideas I had or see.

I love to see other people's works of art. It is wonderful inspiration to create my own art. I save a lot of pictures of things but I never try to exactly replicate it. I always try to put my own twist on things. Not only is it rewarding to create something unique, but I would never want to take credit for something someone else came up with. If I do copy someone else's design I always tell people where I got the idea.

I too know for sure that shows are a thing of the past. I have been in the handmade business for 20 years this year and used to do a big well known show here in Texas. It died about 5 years ago. Meaning all they got were people in dirty t shirts and people who came to copy. Then the import craze began. All you would see is people passing off the imports or buy sell as we used to call it and that ruined the shows. So therefore the public quit coming and paying $4-6 dollars to come see our products. Why when you can get it at any dollar store. Thats another thing. The dollar stores hurt pretty badly. People do not want to pay much for anything anymore. But I have managed to hold on all these years. We work ourselfs to death day and night every day of our lifes for this. We design build and I handpaint childrens furniture. It is very hard long work. Nothing is stained or pegged with buttons. I started my own web site about 3 years ago this past October and this year it finally got noticed and now we are in the top 6 in the search engines without me paying anything. If they only knew we do not get enough sales even though we are better quality and price than the few other sites in our field. We do a once a month Market decorating show here in Texas that draws 100 to 300 thousand people in the good months. Some months we make enough to pay our bills and nothing more and some we make a bit more to buy something else for ourselfs not our business all the time. It is a tough world out there. We still work every day about 16 hours a day and are worn out. We however do something that most would not do or could not do. I think this is always the case. The more ususual or harder the product to make the better you stand a chance of making it out there and selling your product. You cannot copy someone elses product or change it a bit and make any money at it. They must not be able to buy it anywhere else. Also my 2 cents worth on the craft stores. Hobby Lobby carrys very little product to construct anything. They have gone to selling imports and pre made products instead of components to make your own or design anything. It used to be when the first opened up it was all about supplies for the craftsman to make their own product. Now a days you better have a good imagination to put something together with what they have to offer...ha ha anyone else feel this way that has been at this as long as we have. Rose.....keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Life is difficult at times. In 1994 both my kids called within a week of each other to tell me they were moving far away. DD was moving to Oahu and DS was moving to Tokyo. They left within a month of each other. It was so hard but knowing I had raised them to be independent adults helped. My son moved back to NYC in 2000 and DD moved back to California the year before. Then DS and wife moved back to Tokyo. We recently got together in Oahu for a week. It was so good to see him and to meet our granddaughter for the first time. Seeing DDIL again made me appreciate her even more. My grandson, whom I hadn't seen for a year, was a delight and we had so much fun. They are moving back to NYC within the next month or two. I am happy for me but sad for DDIL who has family in Japan but will be far away from both families in NYC. Life is filled with challenges and facing them will make us stronger, even though it is painful to endure. Look for the rainbow thru your tears.

Boy ladies we DO have a lot in common! I was amazed at all the same hobbies and crafts we do alike. Becky, I love to sing too and was in my brother's band at one time, I prefer Country, he prefers rock. I eventually got a job where I had no choice about a promotion and had to take a night shift position and had to leave the band. I am now back on days THANK GOD! I wonder what kind of things do you guys collect? I collect (beside scrapbook supplies of course, LOL) quilts, fisher price little people-don't laugh they are getting pricey-no pun intended. LOL Mickey mouse things for my daughter, Nancy Drew books, dollies as in sewn, and any old looking and affordable furniture (hard to find both ) for my old run down Victorian house. Penny

Looks like various untoward cooking habits tend to drive some people a bit squirrelly? A number of the potlucks that I've attended were family or church-related ... and a number of the people at our smallish church know one another's cooking habits quite well. Don't recall having had any tummy problems in quite a long time. Including my first use of a gifted crockpot last week ... that ran for a few hours, daily, and took forever to cook the smell (so help me, that was supposed to have been "small"!)bits of carrot, potato, chicken and onion ... for almost a week. But I grew up on a farm during World War II, when the hired hands on Dad's large (for those days) farm had gone to war, and we had lots of farm chores to not only keep us busy ... but develop our immune systems, as well. Including pig/cow/horse/chicken manure on hands, clothing, occasionally on face, etc. The dog thought it a real treat to be allowed into the house on a rare occasion, though. Cats/dogs didn't get to lick our dishes ... but, now that I live alone, I've been known to lick out the bowl following breakfast ... to put it in good order for soup, come supper-time. Now that my hairs are fewer ... and shorter ... they get harder to find should they happen to have fallen into some of my food. And ... as someone suggested, quoting someone less fastidious, "... it hasn't killed me, yet". Tomorrow's another day, though. I suspect that I ate some dog in Korea over 50 years ago, though, as I thought that some meat in the soup/stew where I was a guest was a bit different ... and saw an empty dog-hide being carried across the yard, later that day. ole joyfuelled

Oh yes, too little time, too many lovely things to make!!! It's a disease all right! Craftitis I think!! Once you start you are addicted to it & almost impossible to control or cure!! May pass it on to others around you also or e-mail friends. Medications don't work on it & sleep may aggravate the condition!! It's related to GJitis! Jan

dont feel preasure to craft, probley forget alot that I see and want to craft, dont be so hard on yourself, crafting should be fun and not another preasure in life!

My problem is I want every cool thing I see, and I want to make it myself, usually. So I have a folder in my bookmarks that has about 100 tutorials in it, or just links to things that caught my eye for a future project. And I DO do some of them! Honest, I do! Mostly they are for sewing projects, bags especially, or ornaments. Or finger puppets.

But I don't feel pressure, just excitement. I LOVE having a project. Today I'll have some home-alone time so I'm making a road-trip wallet.

ummm hello...I'm Ginger and I too am a "creative o'holic"...I have a 20x24' work shop full of STUFF to craft, that has been crafted, half finished and basic supplies....and you can never ever have too much.I just spent $300 yesterday cleaning out Hobby Lobby's boxed ornament and the ribbon isle. Although these are things I make my money back on it's still never enough.
We won't even talk about my jewelry supplies that don't fit in my work shop but are in the house on 2 industrial sized rolling carts....
I found 3 things this morning I want to try beginning tomorrow....I need help I know it but I love it...it makes me happy!!

After reading these replies I think crafting is our anti-depressant. Don't know that it is cheaper than pills but whole lot healthier!!(is that a word?) And it makes me very happy to see all the great stuff people post & if I make the item it makes me feel great & whoever I give it to also loves it. I love it when I am able to use up stuff I already have so it is no longer cluttering up the place(makes room for more stuff) Don't drink,can't even go to a movie, can't travel because of migraines going nuts at any weather change,lot of other things I've had to give up, like going out at night to visit, bike riding,car window down (except on super hot days) don't buy clothes(all given to me-lots are new) so got to have some vise! Crafting is a good safe hobby!! Jan

Wreaths - I love making wreaths. It makes me happy. It's an obsession. And yes, I do think it's an antidepressant. Definitely.

I think over 50+ years of crafting I have dabbled in just about everything. I have 5 sisters and 1 brother and all have done crafts of some sort all inspired by Mom who at 93 years of age is still making angel ornaments for the family - this year she did those flat beaded ones. They are not as precise as they were years ago but they are loved by all who got one. At one time I had my entire basement devoted to crafts and craft projects and did the craft shows - also had a successful doll clothes business till I lost my husband to cancer and pretty much retreated from the world and got rid of alot of stuff including about 15years of craft magazines. Now I am back to crafting again and encouraging the younger family members to get involved. I am in the process of setting up a room devoted to crafting. I have come full circle and loving it - just wish my Micheals was a little closer but it does save on the pocket book although I have discovered the fun of online shopping - lol ......

you guys, I think I have a problem too, I am always making something.. my son told me , we had to get a bigger house if I keep making things and also buying from on-line auctions.. LOL but it is so much fun.. I love to craft and I love to get good bargins.. I have been buying up art works from auctions and have a nice collection.. and I also have many other items from auctions.. but crafting is the best.. I love to see things that I can create out of almost nothing.. now that I think about it.. I may have to join a 12 step program.. one for crafting and one of auctions.. Hi my name is Huggy and I am addicted to crafts and auctions.. LOL only kidding folks surely not making fun of any 12 step programs.. I have some friends who have used the 12 step programs and are doing very well.. thanks to the grace of God and their programs..

It's been really frustrating for me lately. My answer is YES YES YES. We moved to Germany where crafting isn't quite so big, and I just can't find even the most basic things. It's really tough, and I'm hoping it'll spark a different kind of creativity for me. All I've made is this magazine holder upgrade.
