Anyone use exercise hoops?

My teenaged DDs would like exercise hoops--those things that are like hula hoops. Never having bought them before, I'm not sure what qualities to look for or to avoid. If anyone here has used them--if you have any advice or warnings, please share?

Hi High, As long as you put the peony hoopÂor whateverÂout early so the foliage & stems can grow to fit it, IÂm sure it would work. Pinching the mums a couple times would also help to keep them a little bit shorter. I never got around to pinching mine this year, so they got taller than they have in the past, and what I did, starting as soon as I realized how tall they were going to get, was to tie lightweight twine (string!) around the plants several times as they grew taller to keep the outside stems from flopping over. It works really well as long as the plant is flopping pretty much equally in all directions since the weight from each side counteracts the weight from the opposite side. When I have something that flops toward one side, I still tie twine all the way around the plant, but with 2 or 3 stakes on the side it needs to be pulled towardÂif that makes sense! Whatever you decide to do with mums, you need to start doing it when theyÂre still small and flexible. By late summer, the stems are getting woody and brittle. I donÂt use a hoop or other metal because I donÂt like the way it looks most of the summer while the plant is growing into it. And luckily I was able to get a large cone of green twine when my brother quit selling poinsettias and didnÂt need it anymore, so it really blends in and is virtually invisible. David, if you want more of the one purple mum, the easiest way to do it would be to dig it up VERY early next spring and divide the new growth off of the outside of the plant, making as many new ones as you wantÂand throw away the old, woody center. Ideally mums should have this done to them (no, I donÂt!) every couple years. (My parents used to grow mums commercially when I was a kid!) Skybird P.S. Another consideration would be to purchase a high density foam roller, they come in many sizes but if you get a 36" x 6" you can use it all over. Physical therapists use them for aligning the spine, neck stretches and a verity of other uses. I just ordered one and plan on using it for myofacia /fibromyalgia/arthritis pain. It most likely will not be 100% as affective as deep tissue massage but will hopefully come close. There are a few good books out there on this subject along with instructions and trigger points but I havenÂt weeded through them all yet. After years of studying Pilates, ball, yoga, and traditional weight training, this is new to me. However, after having three deep tissue massages lately and discovering how amazing the results were for me I can not wait to learn a way I can help myself. IÂm not kidding after three deep tissue massages I felt like someone had pulled me out of a little box and I could perform exercises at a much higher level, my concentration and energy was also greatly improved. Reading about deep tissue massage can be very interesting it also supposedly releases stored toxins.

Anyone Use Wii for Exercise?

My DH and I are seniors also and we got our wii fit plus for Christmas. We really love it! I think you can actually try it at places like Walmart and Best Buy. At first I thought I wouldn't like the 'cartoon' like mii people, but it sort of makes it more fun. There is yoga, strength, aerobics, balance, and some really silly but fun things to do. You can flap your arms like a chicken and land on different posts until you land on a ship. Yes, it's silly but you are moving your arms. Another game is step aerobics with a line of other mii people. The Hoola Hoop is fun and works your waist. There is jogging through the little mii town. A punching bag game to work your arms. There is a bicycle exercise (you step as if you are on a bicycle).My favorite game is the Obstacle Course that has you running, jumping and dodging objects. And oh so much more. You can do a mix of whatever you feel like doing. I do about 30 minutes nearly every day. You will need wii fit plus, the console to play it, and a balance board. It is a fixed price of about $300, but if you shop around you may find a store offering a bonus of a gift card or something extra. It is definately a good investment. And if you have children or grandkids over, they can do the exercises also because they are so much fun. You can go to nintendo wii online and see real people including us 'more mature people' doing the exercises. Go for it! Linda Leaf

Hi Moni thanks for starting up the exercising thread. I have been so busy with house projects and working that exercising has gone by the wayside.However that is going to change real fast. I loved the way you feel after doing the walking tapes or pilates. So as soon as this holiday is over I will be back to my exercising routine. I cannot believe I used to do the 5 mile tape and felt great. Merry Christmas to you all! June

Hi. I'm on vacation so haven't been checking in regularly, and find it hard to reply fully on my cellphone. I have been hooping for about 3 years now, and it really changed my body. In fact I won a contest at my gym after my first 3 months for losing the greatest percentage of body fat, most of which came off my middle. I would suggest the Hoopnotica site for hoops, instructional DVDs and inspiration.

leafy, did you try searching for old posts? I think THS might have lost some of the old posts during their last site update, but we had several hooping posts in the last few years. terriks is our expert, but we had quite a few other members who tried it too. Sometimes a google search will bring up old gardenweb posts.

The owner of a nail salon I frequent has a hoop and uses it in the back room during slow times. I haven't really talked to her about it, but she looks slimmer! I was also just reading about it in a Weight Watchers magazine last night. They said to start with 2 minutes and work your way up to 10. Seems like a great thing to keep in the kitchen and do while waiting for dinner to cook! I might give it a try. I'm just starting to see that midsection growth that is such a treat for those of us in our 40s.

When I started I was so bad that I could only go for 30 seconds at a time! Now I can hoop for a half hour or more. I have learned a lot of different hoop techniques, and can hoop on my chest, lift the hoop off my body, etc. Not sure about hooping in the kitchen unless you have a really big kitchen! The adult hoops are large and you need quite a bit of space.

Wish I could get motivated to do it every day. Was pitiful when I first started. Couldn't keep the hoop up more than a few seconds. Now I can manage about 5 minutes, but then get bored.

Terriks, that's pretty impressive!

I usually hoop while watching TV, otherwise I would get bored.
