Anyone use a peony hoop for a mum support?

My mums got way bigger than I anticipated, a couple of them are close to 4' across. The problem now is that the weight of all those gorgeous blooms is too much for the branches, and they are flopping so bad that it looks like a buffalo sat down in the middle of the plant. I went out there today, with plans to stake them, but everytime I tried to tie them to the stake the branches just snapped off. The mums don't look any better, but I ended up with a nice sized bouquet for the kitchen table! I love the colorful blooms in October after everything else has finished, but I am a tidy gardener, and don't like plants laying on top of other plants.

What I was wondering is, if I put a peony hoop in place in the early part of the summer next year, would the mums grow through it and not flop, or would the branches just break off when the blooms developed? Has anyone tried this?
