Speaking of skin care -- sunscreen that doesn't cause breakouts?

I would like to use a sunscreen every day, and I do use an oil-free tinted moisturizer for everyday makeup that has 20 SPF (which I know is not really enough esp. in summer). The problem is, every single sunscreen I have ever used makes me break out. I even tried a new Neutragena face product when we were in St John last week that is specially formulated, supposedly, to prevent breakouts, and I still had some breakouts, though less than with some others. I am 48 years old with age/sun spots and lines forming, I don't need acne too! I have always had acne-prone skin but finally it has been getting better. I don't want sunscreen to screw it up again. Any suggestions for a sunscreen that really won't cause breakouts?

Well, I use Olay for sensitive skin 30, and it does make me slightly break out. I need something new too! But I think hormones are the big cause w/me.

Skinceuticals. The tinted one occasionally causes breakouts for me. The untinted one, Sport 45, does not. However, while I am very careful to avoid my eye area, I sometimes get burning, perhaps just because it's a volatile compound.

I just got home from taking my son to SFO to fly to Spain for a year of study abroad, and on the way home I stopped in Berkeley to see an old school friend who I have recently reconnected with via Facebook. She and her husband make organic skin care products and it was fascinating to see all the natural ingredients that go into them. They had pots of things bubbling away that will eventually be distilled and incorporated into their products. She sent me home with some products and I will report back on how I like them.

We have used a variety of sunscreens over the years, and there is no doubt that some of that had - or still have - the ingredients mentioned above that are considered the culprits. I always pre-treat with Shout, let sit a couple of minutes, and then toss in the wash. Often these shirts (all cottons as well as poly wicking fabrics) sat a week before they were treated & washed. For the past several years, our only detergents were All F&C and Charlies Soap. The ring around the collar, on DH's shirts, from sunscreen never became an issue.

It wasn't all that complicated Carla, so I'll list it here -- and I'm only suggesting it for someone married to a narcissist. 1. A narcissist will need to feel like he's won, so my best advice is don't even waste your time trying to "take him to the cleaners" or "make him pay," because to "win" in the traditional monetary sense, you would have to spend more time, money and emotional energy on lawyers than you could imagine. And since most narcissists are so good with their 'public faces,' you are unlikely to be able to convince the judge that they're awful unless you have aLOT of hard evidence. The differance between a "fair" and "you-win" settlement is not likely to be big enough money to change your life. So go for FAIR - not more. Go for half of the marital assets, your state's "standard" support arrangements, and a pleasant, quick, settlement. He will *need* to be able to walk away feeling like he's won. Remember that for you, walking away IS winning. 2. Since he will need to feel like he's won, find out what it is that will let him feel this way. Realize that it *might not* be anything you would even want. It'll probably be something visible - might be money, the house, the 'good' car, artwork, furnishings, even certain child custody provisions that preserve the appearance of him being a good dad. You'll need to know what he wants, and if it's something that's not particularly important to you, don't tip off your hand that you don't care about it. Again, it's not so much that he needs to win -- it's that he needs to be able to *feel* like he won. Let him "win" something visible, and make a loud and visible show of him winning-you losing. (You know how much he likes that.) 3. Deep down, most narcissists feel really lousy about themselves. At some level, they feel they are worthless frauds, and this is why they work so hard to buff up their public images. In my opinion, their greatest fear at this point in time is that you will somehow reveal to the world what a fake they really are. So don't do it! This will be very difficult because you will probably have years of pent-up anger at your abuser, and venting that anger is cathartic. But make a list, build a file, gather your evidence and ammunition -- anything that would embarass him to the world and invalidate the picture he tries to paint. (sexual performance issues are biggies, social embarassments, career slights) Then sit on it. Tell him that all you want is a FAIR settlement with no mudslinging public trial that allows you both to walk away with your DIGNITY, SELF-RESPECT and PRIVACY intact. Let him act like it's you who would be embarassed if all your secrets came tumbling out, because that's important to him. But realize that if you expose him to the world as a fraud (like the world cares!), you've blown your best weapon. That's my two cents --

I'm sure you can get fairly good retinol products at the drugstore these days, some better than others. However, I get mine via prescription, and the cost is covered via insurance. Yes, I have to be pre-approved every year, which takes a couple of days, but it's worth it in the long run since I pay maybe a couple of dollars for the name brand stuff. Tried the generic but didn't like it. Too greasy. It would likely depend on your insurance and what it covers whether you'd want to try that route with a dermatologist. There are varying strengths (.025, .05, etc) so most first-time users start with the lowest strength. If your skin is truly that sensitive, I'd probably go easy with the Clarisonic, and also take the advice of your skin care specialist first before investing in one. A lot of people assume they really need to scrub with it using pressure. Not true. It is a gentle rotating motion with the device doing the work. And maybe use it every few days to start, not every day. If the redness from the broken capillaries bothers you, why don't you consider having that addressed first and using it as an entry point to the skin care with your dermatologist for other advice? Most would probably give you a free or reduced-rate consult and demo of their products. And the good ones have samples they are more than happy to give you.

It took me years to find a sunscreen for daily use that did not sting or cause acne flare ups. I have been using CliniqueÃ¢ÂÂs City Block Sunscreen, either the SPF 25 or the SPF 40 for at least 10 years with great results. I wear it either alone or under make-up and with and without moisturizer.

Research using coconut oil. It's a natural sunscreen. I have oily skin, too, but the coconut oil doesn't cause any breakouts for me. The best thing is that it doesn't have all the chemicals that the other suncreens do.

My girlfriend recently opened a laser spa and carries Colorescience mineral sunscreen. I bought some from her before our pre-Christmas trip to Mexico and was very happy with it. I am very blonde and pale and I didn't even see the tiniest hint of redness on my face (I bought the SPF 50 one).

What I particularly loved about it is that it is a powder - so easy to apply, with no danger of getting it in your eyes. I kept the little brush and tube in my beach bag, and I would just dust a little extra on my face if I noticed any shine. It is expensive but I will probably buy it again.

I have really sensitive skin and use no creams of any kind because of that. So sunscreen has been a terrible problem for me to find that I could use. One of my friends had Mary Kay sunscreen that I had to borrow when we were at the beach and I loved it. That's how I found their lip balm, too, which I also love. I don't sell it, don't know anyone who does, but my friend buys it for me from her neighbor. No breakouts, no stinging or irritation at all.

I was interested in the idea of coconut oil as a natural sunscreen, and found this article about the natural sun protective properties of various oils. Unfortunately coconut oil only provides about an SPF of 2.

I use Skinceuticals spf50 in the link below, I really love it, it has a light tint, is very fluid and light to apply.

You may be sensitive to the chemicals. I am very sensitive.

Try a physical sunscreen with titanium oxide instead of the oxybenzones.

You have to read a lot of labels. Clinique had one called age defying. But sometimes companies change their formulas, so I always read the ingreedients.

Alba is a natural products company that makes sunscreens. I get at whole foods or drugstore .com

And bullfrog brand chemical sunscreen is the best and only one I am not sensative to. I get it on drugstore . Com

La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid (?--exact wording) is a good one as is their Anti-Aging Primer sunscreen (though that one contains dimethicone, which some people don't like, it leaves my skin looking and feeling very nice and smooth, not greasy).

catmom, last fall I went to the store looking for a new sunscreen that didn't shine so much. I don't have a problem with breakouts, just didn't like looking so shiny. The saleslady let me try a bit of La Roche-Posay Anthelios. It felt silky and smooth and not shiny one bit. I haven't actually used any yet as I am waiting for spring/summer since it is a 60 spf. I dont get much sun exposure during winter so I thought it would be a waste to use, it was quite expensive to buy.

Sunscreens always ended up getting in my eyes and burning/stinging and it drove me crazy, especially because I spend a lot of time at the beach. My dermatologist recommended EltaMD UV physical spf 41 and it is fantastic. Like Julie said, the chemical sunscreens can be very irritating and usually are the ones that cause burning and stinging in your eyes. The physical sunscreens don't. I was soo happy to find this sunscreen. Also, it is lightly tinted, so it's all you need! I will never use anything else. My dermatologist sells it in her office but it can be purchased online.

When I had adult acne, my dermatologist recommended Eucerin Daily Protection, SPF 30. I've been using it for years.

Last summer I found Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30 plus at Vitacost--it got great reviews and I bought it, and the coordinating one for the body, too. Love them. Ingredients are about as pure and healthful as they get, and I have not broken out.
