Carpet around fruit trees
Comments (46)I should mention that my experience of losing sweetness of peaches after 20 years of mulching is entirely anecdotal, although I've seen some research that seems to support the connection. I didn't mean to suggest that organic mulch as a permanent weed solution is a problem everywhere or even that I'm certain it's a problem on my own property. I'm only suggesting it may be a problem over time at some sites. What I do know is that the standard advice is to keep tree vigor moderate to produce the highest quality of fruit. Vegetable growers know this applies to tomatoes as well and probably all other annual garden fruits that we call vegetables that are improved by more of their own sugar. I've also learned that fruit trees can do fine in mowed sod once they are established although it was never my preferred management method until I became suspicious of mulch sometimes over invigorating trees I care for. On some sites I continue to mulch peaches and cherries after I stop mulching apples because it supports the vigor I wish to maintain. The point is to keep your trees at the sweet spot, where they are vigorous enough to fight disease and grow perfect fruit and this will have everything to do with what your soil and climate is to begin with. Peaches as a species require more vigor and more nitrogen than apples according to general recommendations. Young trees of all species are best served by keeping them very vigorous so they can overcome competition and pests and achieve their place in the sun and bear large crops quickly. So the best advice I can give is to try to maintain the sweet spot of moderate vigor for bearing trees and watch their growth to determine how you manage them from that....See MoreThe Case Against Mulch Rings
Comments (30)Calliope and Wisconsitom, those of us in CA can't grow grass, at least not without an enormous amount of effort (and water). Many of us don't have a blade of grass no matter the size of our gardens, and many municipalities offer cash bounties for lawn removal, due to the water usage. Thus, we have to come up with some substance to cover the bare earth to prevent erosion, retain moisture, reduce weeds, etc. Mulch is often the answer, especially when the plants are young. In climates where large expanses of grass are possible, the aesthetic has generally evolved to favor the landscapes that flora describes. That aesthetic traveled with the settlers from England to the US and is the dominant aesthetic in much of the Eastern US. It's lovely, just not possible here in CA with our dry summers and Mediterranean climate. Markces, your decision about whether to mulch your tree or not is largely aesthetic as long as you don't even consider the harmful practice of piling the mulch up the tree trunk. Do whatever you think looks best. One could make the argument that the mulch surrounding the tree is more beneficial to the tree than grass, for the reasons laid out above by Wisconsitom, but grass will not hurt the tree. As many have noted, the choices that one makes in one's own garden are largely - if not completely! - matters of personal taste. That's part of what makes it rewarding!...See Moreupdate: july mnf swap: letting freedom ring (part 3!)
Comments (145)My box arrived today. Hubby took it down the basement until I got home and things were nice and cool when I opened it. Darrin packed his box FULL. I couldn't believe how much he was able to put into that box. Amazing!! Keep in mind he went with a patriotic theme beginning with a nice note that included a poem he wrote. Job well done too. centranthus alba Iris (All night long?) rain lilies ranunculus anemone orange trumpet vine, (I have always wanted one of these and although I discovered one along the side of the ditch this year, I want one by the house.) Gladiolas, red and yellow Horseradish, can't wait to read up on this and get it growing. Along with the plants was Bag of tootsie rolls Hand sanitizer Strawberry marshmallow cream lip balm 2 notepads with flowers on the front notepad with a bluebird on the front, (I use a lot of notepads) 2 packages of Jobes fertilizer spikes, one for flowers and one for vegies Patriotic cushie for my cans two small keychain flashlights, handy!! Seed baggies Lady bug magnets a two pack of lipbalm Blue dolphin windchime Pocket phillips screwdriver, (keeping this away from hubby) Squirrel pot hugger, cute Plant markers AND a crocheted patriotic butterfly pin, (I am sure this is another one of Elly's creations. Be sure to tell her thanks for me Darrin) Thanks for the wonderful, wonderful box. I am going to keep it all wet and get it in the ground on the weekend. The temperature is supposed to reach 102 tomorrow so there is no way I am planting these lovely things now just for them to cook out there. Dan, I had one of the best times in this swap. Thanks again for hosting it. You did a super job. Margo...See MoreUPDATE: Garden Circle Exchange Ring August - continued
Comments (11)Hey people! It's nice to see more of us posting again. Sorry I haven't been around as much but for some reason I've been feeling the need to spend some time in the evenings with my DH. I can't imagine that, can you? lol I hope Katrina was kind to all of you who live in her path. I've experienced the wrath of Carla in my time and it was very mild compared to most I'm thinking. God bless you all who have lost or been harmed in any way. Beth, I got your email and will answer it as soon as I have time. I have to make a cake tonight to take to work tomorrow so I'm trying to hurry now. Be on the lookout for the mail carrier. ;-) YaYa, I am still planning to send you another card. I guess I'm just being lazy these days. I'm going to MS this weekend to my grandmother's birthday party. We're celebrating her 99th. Tonight I am going to try and get everything ready. The pictures are all beautiful as usual. I love your babies Stephanie. Teresa, I hope you and baby Gabbie are doing well now. Shirley, your orchid is gorgeous! Ruth, have fun with your crew/family on your trek through the vast waters. I wish you beginners luck with the Regatta! I live on a huge lake and just saw a fantastic Regatta a couple of weeks ago when out on the lake swimming. I've only been in a tiny sail boat once and it capsized and we lost the sail and pole! lol Nobody I was with knew what they were doing and the boat was borrowed so we replaced what we lost. It was fun until that happened and that was really funny in retrospect. I hope someday to get aboard a large one and see how it really is to sail the deep waters. Pooch, I'm happy to hear that DD doesn't plan to spend every moment studying and can spare some for the beach! Now that is my kind of fun or at least in my younger days. Ahhh, to be young and slim again. lol I took a trip to Little Rock to the Rheumatologist today and had a pretty good checkup so all in all I am in good shape for the shape I'm in. Wishing you all the best there is, Nancy...See Morestbonner
