Blue Star RNB w/ Island Trim Against a Wall

Hi -

We are contemplating installing a 30" Blue Star RNB all-gas range with island trim against a wall. I have reviewed other forums regarding Wolf ranges and condensation issues and am familiar with the Blue Star installation instructions that the wall must be non-combustible and heat resistant, and extend 6 inches below the range top.

We are concerned about condensation from the island trim forming on the wall behind the range and dripping into the island trim or onto the floor. But the installation instructions and our salesman's advice suggest that this is not something to be concerned about.

If you have installed a Blue Star range with island trim against a wall, I would appreciate hearing about your experience, particularly with condensation forming on the wall and its effect on the wall behind your range.

The hood should move enough air to keep condensation at bay. IF you have enough air flow and makeup air.

That's the set up in have with my RNB. No issues at all. You'll be fine doing it that way.

fenworth has got it right, backer board behind the range as required by the spec's and to the extent you feel necessary. The 1/2 inch blends with sheetrock so you can get an even transition and not have to use backer board for the whole backsplash. Technically, if you do sheetrock covered with tile/stone/SS, above the range, you should be fine as well. The technical requirement is the 6 inches below and immediately behind the range. I set my Bluestar (island trim) 3 1/2 inches off the wall but still used the backerboard on the framing that holds the range off the wall and the granite counter strip behind the range. Above the range is a base layer of sheetrock covered with travertine, which is just fine. My motivation to move the range out was to get the full use of the back burners for big pots. I saw it in a lot of design magazines several years ago but you don't see it showcased quite as often anymore. All I can say is that it has worked marvelously and I am forever glad I did it. In addition, the 3 1/2 inch space in back makes a great decorative/functional shelf for often used spices oils and utinsels. At each end of the range there are 3 1/2 inch reeded posts to account for the kick out. The range sits even with the posts and the granite is cut to "flare" out over the posts and to the extended range top. It looks good, uses minimal space and is VERY functional.

We did the same as beryberry but used a 3 1/2 inch bump out. As berryberry said, looks nice and makes the back burners much more accomodating for large cookware. Also, with 3 1/2 inches, the space in back gives room for spices/oils and the like. The other point I would make is that with the high SS backs, high heat on the back burners tends to heat stain the SS... my last had the 21 inch high back in Wolf and I eventually used the back burners only for medium to low cooking for that reason. If you choose not to go with the island trim option, I would definitely opt to have both 22K burners put in front. Those guys really put out some serious heat. For safety, we have 1/2 inch sheetrock covered with a ceramic tile backsplash above the range and 1/2 inch cement board behind the range (from the top of the range down as req'dd by spec). With this configuration, I have NO fire hazard concerns. Finally, if you need more time to decide, I am sure you can work with your dealer (especially if it s Eurostoves) to go ahead and order and choose the trim a bit later in the process. I think BS is usually 2-3 months out on production. Happy choosing!

Thank you both for responding. The photos were really helpful, racmrc, and you have a good looking setup there. I received a call back from Blue Star this afternoon and after I explained to the rep the look I was going for, she said it would be fine to omit the island trim, run a stainless sheet from the countertop downward behind the rangetop, extend my granite countertop behind the rangetop where the island trim would normally go, and then do the ceramic tile from the countertop upward as a backsplash. I think that's how I will go, unless one of you experienced folks has advice to the contrary. I wonder if I may impose further by asking more opinions... Do you find the back burners of the rangetop to be adequate in size to accommodate large pots in the normal 24" deep countertop situation? I saw where someone mentioned making the stove cabinet deeper so the rangetop would have more countertop space behind it to accommodate larger diameter pots and wondered whether that was a good enough idea for me to make some changes here, at the 11th hour. I would have to make all the cabinets along that wall deeper to make it work. Thanks again for your help - Len

1) I recall the brass trim is a couple hundred more per range. 1a) The 24" RNB is a new version of the RPB . That's cool and they'll match front plates now. 2,) Hard to tell. I think the island trim looks better and will allow a larger splayed (windsor) pot on the back burner. It must have granite,tile or stainless behind it, so you're O.K. there. I suppose the 8" keeps boil-overs and splatters from dripping down the wall as much (or into where the island trim vents would be).

I have a 36" RNB with six burners, island trim. It is not up against the wall but up against my granite backsplash. There have been no problems with it. Of course we have to clean the backsplash now and then. (you can't really see it but you can feel the dirt/grime buildup)

Works great and looks great.

Thanks for the feedback, hollysprings, gtadross, and moelarrycurly. moelarrycurly, your setup is basically exactly what we're considering. I also talked with a Blue Star service person this morning and she assured me there wouldn't be any issues with this type of installation and added that the rear vent is primarily to allow heat, not moisture, to escape. She did say that there is occasionally moisture buildup associated with the RNB, but primarily on the door and not the rear vent. Thanks again for the helpful responses, everyone.

It will depend on what you have for a backsplash plus what you have for climate and insulation too if your range is located on an exterior wall. Also add in what heats your home and what temperature you set your thermostat.

I think the blue star guy misspoke. The gas fire creates moisture as a by product. As the warm, moist air passes a relatively cold surface, it will drop some of the moisture onto the surface. You can see it on the oven glass for a few minutes and then the glass warms up and the moisture evaporates, picked up by the hot air and goes out the island trim.

If its turning into moisture on the backsplash, it means the backsplash is cold. It will also warm up after a few minutes. Having more air exhaust as in having more cfm in your hood or make up air isn't really going to help because the "cure" would be to warm the backsplash before turning on the oven.

I use the "wipe once" during preheat and wait for spring method. There are several sad reasons why our backsplash wall runs cold in winter, our backsplash is stainless steel, we have steam heat, we leave the heat turned down most of the time and we live in a place where the relative humidity is considered to be very low at 50%. No amount of make up air is making up for that!

I have a used brick backsplash behind my 36" RNB with island trim. Only a bit of moisture appears when first turning on the oven, but quickly evaporates once the oven heats up. Same is true of the glass in the oven door, it steams up for a bit, and then clears up as the oven heats. No problems with gook or grime, even with the somewhat porous brick, you should be fine with granite...
