Pumpkin Pie---Should I use pumpkin or squash?

I would love to grow a pumpkin or squash so I can make my own homemade pumpkin pie. It was just recently that I learned that the canned pumpkin in the store is really squash. Now I'm not sure what kind of seeds to look for. What do you recommend that I try? The only restrictions is that it must be short-vined (no longer than 6'). A bush or semi-bush variety would be great.

An added bonus would be that the pumpkin be just big enough to carve if you think a pumpkin would be best for pies.

Can anyone help?

What canned pumpkin is really squash? The Libby's pumpkin is pumpkin. While pumpkin can be considered a round winter squash, we usually think of it in a class by itself. If you want to grow pumpkin and eat pumpkin pie, then you should plant pumpkin. I've grown pumpkins, they took over the back yard, they are hard to corral. A pumpkin big enough to use in a pie would be too heavy for a bush.

Carol - My point with the steak was simply that the USDA guidelines are supposed to be idiot proof. Since I am not an idiot, your ouija comment notwithstanding, I find myself looking at the USDA guidelines with a healthy degree of skepticism. That isn't to say I'm going to throw them out the window, simply that I'm open to alternatives. Canning with wire bail and Weck style jars is not recommended by the USDA, either - but people in Europe do it all the time - and don't die. George, I bet you're right, but I hate going out on a limb like that. Merton, I thought maybe I could find a comparison of the cucurbita seeds that would help you, so I checked my copy of Suzanne Ashworth's book SEED TO SEED: SEED SAVING AND GROWING TECHNIQUES FOR VEGETABLE GARDENERS and here is how she describes them: Cucurbita maxima: Thick seeds that are white or tan or brown with cream colored margins and thin cellophane coatings. (As George pointed out, your Lakota is a maxima so should fit this description.) C. moschata seeds are small, oblong and beige with a dark beige margin. (Your butternut is a moschata so one of your two solid tan types of seed ought to match this description.) C. pepo seeds are cream-colored and each has a white margin. Your acorn squash is a pepo so its seed should match this description. The problem is that your spaghetti squash is a pepo also, so its' seeds ought to match this description too. C. agyrosperma (formerly mixta) seeds would be the easiest to identify because they usually have small cracks in them. (They are described as white or tan with a pale margin and cracks in the skin coat on the flat sides of the skins which are covered with a thin cellophane covering.) None of the squash in your packet are agyrosperma types though. If you have specific variety names for your spaghetti, butternut, acorn and Lakota squashes, you probably could google and find descriptions of each squash, including the approximate size of the mature squash and that size might help you figure out which of your pepo seeds is which. SFG spacing for melons, pumpkins and squash

I am growing Sugar Baby melons in tight quarters this year myself. First try at this. In the past I always had a traditional style garden, long rows with paths between. I live on a new property now and don't have the space for that now. I planted seeds for two mounds of melons in a 3 foot space and will trellis them. Due to the odd location 1 should have full sun all day and the other will be shaded around 2-4pm. In my area the hottest time of day is usually around 3-4pm(EDST) during the summer. I have always favored afternoon shade for the garden. Of course thats for personal reasons though. I will mostly pick from the garden in the afternoon. Honestly though, in my area of high humidity I think it best the plant cool down and acclimate a good while before evening comes to reduce the condensation of moisture on the plants. Not sure how bad that is here, I used to live on the coast and that was a constant problem. This is my first year of gardening since I moved and although the humidity is high, it's not as bad as the coast.

I've used butternut squash for pumpkin pie and prefer the flavor. It tastes enough like pumpkin that nobody would notice if you didn't tell them. It's also the same color. And it's good in its own right. That would be my choice. Any ol' seed company should have them. Or buy one, make pie, and if you like it, save the seeds!

I use Kobacha squash (Japanese pumpkin) to replace canned pumpkin and it is very sweet. I have seeds saved from the ones I got at the market and will try growing them this year.

I generally use either butternut squash or Kobacha (which is known here as Jap or Kent pumpkin). Both are naturally sweet- it's very rare to get a bland flavoured one of either.

I love blue Hubbards best for everything that calls for pumpkin puree. I haven't grown them yet, though-- have no idea of their growing habits. The flavor is the best I've tasted, though.

I've done this when I had a biggish garden, and while I love to garden, I can't claim that home grown tasted vastly superior to canned. The Garden forums might be more help.

I tried two different recipes for "fresh" pumpkin pie these past holidays, and I could not tell the difference from canned. Very disappointing since I'd gone out of my way to get sugar pumpkins, roasting, scraping etc.
And the color wasn't as orangy...kinda a bit baby poo color after it cooked. Sorry TMI :)

Pumpkin expert I'm not but I have made pies from pumpkins when I found pumpkins cheaply around here. I made the pies directly from the pumpkins and froze them. My kids loved them. I thought they were a little stringy but DH and kids didn't care. Wouldn't it be easier to find a farmers market or fruit stand around halloween and purchase your pumpkins for pies then? After halloween the pumpkin fields around here are littered with pumpkins. Probably what they sell for canning. I use a lot of pumpkin, canned, and perhaps it might be worthwhile to can your own.
