Dacor 30' DF Discovery, Wolf 30' AG or GE Monogram 30' DF
Comments (11)I could go on and on about everything wrong with Dacor and have on this forum, but my experience was three years ago and maybe they are better now. I had the Discovery wall oven and the ER36D range. I would also be aware that sales incentives can color the opinion of some sales people. Before you buy, check out the reputation of the store where you would buy your appliances. Check online reviews and BBB. Anyway after we got rid of our Dacor appliances(they bought them back), we thought maybe BS and drove 250 miles to look at them but my husband did not like the fit and finish and they were having problems with the doors and ignitors at the time. We decided to go with the Wolf DF with a sealed burner. I thought we were settling at the time because I wouldn't have the 22K burner. When I got the range, I loved it. It has plenty of heat for the type of cooking I do -searing steaks and the occasional stir fry. The simmer can keep a pot of mashed potatoes on all burners indefinitely. It is often said the flame on the sealed burner spreads but I have not problem making caramel in a 7 inch pan. The semi sealed burner on Wolf AG is different and I haven't cooked on it. If I did a lot of stir fry and high heat cooking where I wanted a more central high heat and that were the most important consideration, I would think about the culinarian and if the simmer wasn't low enough use a simmer plate. I still like the BS shape of the burner for even heating. I don't think there is only one good range but each has features that might suit your style of cooking. The oven in the Wolf DF is great because you can manipulate the heat from the top or bottom depending on what you are baking/roasting and you can use the convection only mode if the oven is really filled up. I've never had to though as it bakes very evenly on the conv bake cycle. I also like the cool doors, with the grands running around plus I don't want to stand in front of a hot oven and the self clean. The AG ranges have the infrared broilers but we grill outside 95% of the time so this was not a feature that was important to me. I know you didn't ask about Wolf DF but since you were considering Dacor DF, I thought I would mention it. Good luck with your decision. deeageaux- "You can argue how much better the Culinarian cooktop is but I don't think anyone can serioiusly argue that the Wolf/Monogram is as good or better" Yes, you can. They are very different and not everyone has the same priorities when choosing a cooktop or range....See Moredacor distinctive ag range require hood with 600 cfm?
Comments (8)Deeageaux, you just totally burst my bubble. The past three days I've been narrowing down my rangehood selection and I was feeling really good about the Kobe under cabinet CH-191SQB-1. Powerful, quiet, newer LED lighting, looks are ok although wife prefers a more classic pro-canopy look versus the sleeker slightly more modern look of that particular Kobe. Then I read you post above regarding depth. I quickly check and lo and behold, every Kobe ( I looked at 6-7 models, every under cabinet and even several wall mounts that can be under cabinet as well) is only 22" depth. Is this a deal breaker? It seems like a critical thing to me as the most powerful and frequently used burners are on the front. My cooktop with be a 36" 6 burner rangetop, brand not 100% decided but likely Bluestar. I'll have to go back to the drawing board on this selection I guess....See MoreDacor 48 inch or Wolf 60 inch?
Comments (16)Not the OP but I'm still on here and a lot of water has gone under the bridge. I had the Wolf DF for about 4.5 years and the cobalt blue enamel came off of the bottom after running the self clean. This has been an issue, if you look at the lawsuits on these ranges built as far back as 2006. Quite a few posters had issues of chipping with as many a three ovens in a row. The all gas versions do not seem to have the issue (no blue interior) although they are mentioned in at least one lawsuit. I like Dacor platforms that were bigger too but the ovens I had were worthless. Mine were with the Discovery controllers at the time, different from some of the other ovens. They have since been bought by Samsung and been through model changes through the years. I though maybe they fixed them but there was recently a poster here that bought a wall oven and returned it quickly because they had issues with it. What type of cooking do you do? The Ilve has a few things that might cause concern for some people. The burners are all underpowered for what most people want now. Ranges like BlueStar and Capital have 22-25K on at least two burners. The Wolf all gas also tops out at 15K and you may have had 15 or 16K on your Dacor range So maybe that works for you. I have 15K on my Wolf DF and it is OK but it is on all burners except one. Many people complain that a griddle with 15K is underpowered so 10.5K would be even less. They also mention that the griddle is stainless so it will not season like rolled steel on Wolf. Stainless by itself is one of the poorest conductors of heat so would heat unevenly unless it has aluminum or copper sandwiched in. The French top is also only 8.5K BTUs compared to 18K on something like BlueStar. Also check out the oven size. Look at the usable rack size. A lot of space is taken up by the warming drawer. Look at the broiler size. This is the manual. I would read it and it might bring some other questions to mind. http://ilveappliances.com/sites/default/files/documents/ILVE_Manual_2-13.pdf Do you have service for Ilve where you live? Comments (8)I have the GE Cafe Dual Fuel. It was recommended to me by a friend who is a chef. I have had it for about 5 years and like it a million times better than the ceran-top electric it replaced. I haven't had a single issue, and it cleans up as well as you can expect stainless steel to clean up. I use the baking drawer for boxed hors dourves or reheating casseroles. I don't think I would bake a cake or make a roast in it, but the drawer is definitely handy when I am entertaining an army. The oven's convection and roast options heat very evenly, and the power-boil burners are much hotter than the ceran-top. I haven't noticed that the broiler turns off when you open the door. A message comes up on the LED display that says "close door", but I don't usually have the door open for more than a minute or so. It might turn off if left open for a longer period of time. Maybe you can ask GE. I would imagine that the metal knobs would get very hot if the door is cracked open for any length of time. Three large grates, certainly no sharp edges. This range does have the middle griddle, and while I never use it, it's nice to have that real estate in the center of the cook-top. If I'm sauteing and it gets too hot, it's so easy just to slide the pan over on the continuous grate. Same with large pots of boiling water (like for corn on the cob). I can let the water cool a bit on the center grate before I pour it out, and still be able to use the burners. That being said, I am redoing the kitchen, and if I can find an induction range that fits in this 30" space, that will be my next cooking method. I just feel that induction is safer than an exposed flame. Plus, I like the idea of putting a pot on to boil with a timer, just in case there's a distraction and I forget the kettle is on... I hope this helps! GE Cafe Dual Fuel...See Morewekick
