dacor distinctive ag range require hood with 600 cfm?

I just saw a dacor distinctive ag range that looks great and seems to have everything i want. what do people think about dacor? best of all, it comes in lp which is what i need. for a range like this, do i need a hood with 600 cfm? I am trying to figure out what the dacor will require and if i would then need something for mua? (I just learned what this is!). if I bought a ge cafe or similar instead, i assume i could use a hood that had 450 cfm? am i wrong in assuming this? thanks so much for your help. I finally figured out which dw i want (bosch 500, although i just found an 800 version for a similar price) and now need to nail down the range and either microwave or hood.

GE CafÃÂ© has a slightly more powerful cooktop than the Dacor. Ideally, you would want a 600 cmf hood for both. I would check if you have local MUA regulations. If so I would probably go with the maximum allowed. Best by Broan and Modern Aire now have inexpensive MUA solutions. Some hoods have restrictor plates. That could be removed after inspection.

Dacor electric ovens don't have a very good reputation but the AG ranges don't get many reviews. Owners don't comer here to rave nor complain much.

Thanks for your comments. I haven't found much about dacor, which could be a good thing I guess! Any thoughts on the bosch dual fuel? It is cheaper than dacor and ge cafe but seems like people hate the knobs. Dacor knobs are stainless. Any recos on a not too pricey 600 cfm hood?

I had a 600 cfm Modern-Aire hood venting straight out in my old kitchen. It was barely enough for an underpowered gas cooktop which might have been an old Dacor, though it was mounted a bit high because of an existing window. I now have a 1200 cfm M-A hood, also venting out the wall, and mostly use induction. It's quite a bit more power than I need (they didn't have anything in between), but does an admirable job, rarely on full, often on lowest. I don't think 250 cfm would be adequate for more than very basic things like a little boiling water, a low saute of a few vegetables, or eggs. For browning meats, boiling down stock, or frying, it doesn't seem adequate at all. Certainly not for pulling from the oven. I have Gaggenau ovens, and I love them, but I sure do smell what's cooking! Perhaps the filters trap grease or other particulates, but not smells! On the rare occasions I make a bad smell (i.e., something spills and burns), I do find that my big, overpowered hood, which is about 6-8 feet away, does help. On top power. As in major suckage. Doesn't completely do it, but it helps. They used to make special hoods for wall ovens, but they don't seem to any more. I looked. I have a place to put one if I ever find one. :)

The key factors for grease and smell removal, whether residential or commercial, are capture and containment. The hood has to be large enough in aperture to capture, and the hood has to be deep enough (top to bottom) and flow enough cfm for containment. Island hoods have two "problems." One is aesthetic. Instead of being on a wall, they are in a living space protruding from the ceiling. This makes people want to minimize their size when the other "problem" -- described below -- drives them larger. Island hoods do not have a wall behind to direct the effluent up to the hood. They do not have a wall behind to minimize the effects of drafts, and to minimize air disturbances from people walking about. As a result, it is easier for the rising effluent to miss being captured. This leads to the need for making the hood larger in aperture area. If placed higher than the typical 30 inches, whether for better sightlines to the cooktop or for less obtrusive appearance, the hood aperture has to be even larger. To keep the effluent in the hood after capture, the air velocity has to be sufficient, so the larger the hood, the higher the cfm needed. Bottom line is that the island hood may need as much as 1.5 times the cfm of a wall hood performing the same duty. If you go to the Subzero site, click to go to the Wolf part, and then go to the ventilation hood pages, you should be able to find the design guide. Near the back of this pdf file are exhaust fan recommendations by hood type and cooktop type. These nominal values should give you a starting point from which you can work as you size your hood for your conditions. Replacing the existing duct work is a big deal. As I said before, there are 600 CFM hoods that work with 6" ducting - that would be your best and least expensive option at this point. Is it a perfect solution - no - but it is a reasonable solution. I was in a similar situation - I have a 600 CFM hood with a 6" duct over my DCS 30" gas range. It is quite powerful enough - the only drawback is that it is only 19" deep so some stuff escapes the front of the hood. I occasionally have to clean some grease off the front of the hood. Not a big deal.

I'm in your shoes as far as looking for a hood for my 30" Wolf R304, and we are looking to buy in the next few days. Our R304 has been installed since February (it replaced an older JennAir downdraft), and we haven't had any ventilation at all since then other than opening a window. We are not big into frying or woking and only occasionally do stinky food. In reality there have only been a couple of times we have even felt we needed a hood. Plus, for the most part, we only have two burners going at a time on top. Heat from the oven exhausting is an issue, and since it got hot out we have been using our electric wall oven rather than the gas Wolf so as not to heat up the kitchen too much. We live in a cold climate, so the extra heat output from the range is nice in the colder months. Our primary goal will be to have a hood to remove hot air expelled by the range in the summer heat. In the past four months there have only been max a half a dozen times when we needed to open the window specifically to deal with cooking fumes or output or smoke. And, the wall and cupboard area by the range are not showing any evidence of a lot of grease coating them. So for all of these reasons, and because we have a ton of constraints as far as hood size, we plan to go with something smaller than either option you are discussing. On our short list of hoods the largest hood we are considering is probably smaller than the smaller one you discuss. Having lived with this range already for months we are comfortable with this decision. We know it will work for us. What is best for you and your cooking style may be another story. I too have read everything here for ages now and have come to an understanding that what is recommended here as maximal is often for an unconstrained situation in a kitchen gut or in new construction where everything can be planned around the absolutely optimal hood that will take care of a range with all four burners and the oven blazing away at the same time. Many of us who are doing minor remodelings or just appliance upgrades do not have the luxury of following all of that advice. Good luck with your decision. Whether I gave you a compelling argument to go with the 10" I don't know.

I've been reading lots of posts and see that you have lots of info that you've shared. That said, I'm wondering if you think there is another all gas range I should consider, keeping in min that 3k is already pushing it for me budget wise. i certainly care about looks, but function and reliability are also important. An lp range would be ideal instead of one I have to convert. Also curious if you know of any hoods? I never knew how complicated this would be! It makes me terrified to make the wrong choice and end up with a lemon. Also wondering if most of the models are counter depth or do I need to make sure the depth works for my 30 inch wide, 25.5 deep spot?

All ranges are designed to go into 25.5" deep space in cabinet run.

Hood brands? I like Kobe and XO.

Excluding super premium hoods, the ideal size you want is 36" wide and 24" deep. Depth being more important that width. Those 20-22" deep hoods don't really cover the smoke and grease rising from the front burners.

Deeageaux, you just totally burst my bubble. The past three days I've been narrowing down my rangehood selection and I was feeling really good about the Kobe under cabinet CH-191SQB-1. Powerful, quiet, newer LED lighting, looks are ok although wife prefers a more classic pro-canopy look versus the sleeker slightly more modern look of that particular Kobe.

Then I read you post above regarding depth. I quickly check and lo and behold, every Kobe ( I looked at 6-7 models, every under cabinet and even several wall mounts that can be under cabinet as well) is only 22" depth. Is this a deal breaker? It seems like a critical thing to me as the most powerful and frequently used burners are on the front.

My cooktop with be a 36" 6 burner rangetop, brand not 100% decided but likely Bluestar.

I'll have to go back to the drawing board on this selection I guess.

Are under cabinet and 24" deep.

I have a 36" Culinarian range with a 42" x 24" deep hood in a galley kitchen. I absolutely would not want a shallower hood. If I had a big open kitchen I would have gone with a 42" x 27" hood.
