dacor distinctive ag range require hood with 600 cfm?

I just saw a dacor distinctive ag range that looks great and seems to have everything i want. what do people think about dacor? best of all, it comes in lp which is what i need. for a range like this, do i need a hood with 600 cfm? I am trying to figure out what the dacor will require and if i would then need something for mua? (I just learned what this is!). if I bought a ge cafe or similar instead, i assume i could use a hood that had 450 cfm? am i wrong in assuming this? thanks so much for your help. I finally figured out which dw i want (bosch 500, although i just found an 800 version for a similar price) and now need to nail down the range and either microwave or hood.

GE CafÃÂ© has a slightly more powerful cooktop than the Dacor. Ideally, you would want a 600 cmf hood for both. I would check if you have local MUA regulations. If so I would probably go with the maximum allowed. Best by Broan and Modern Aire now have inexpensive MUA solutions. Some hoods have restrictor plates. That could be removed after inspection.

Dacor electric ovens don't have a very good reputation but the AG ranges don't get many reviews. Owners don't comer here to rave nor complain much.

Thanks for your comments. I haven't found much about dacor, which could be a good thing I guess! Any thoughts on the bosch dual fuel? It is cheaper than dacor and ge cafe but seems like people hate the knobs. Dacor knobs are stainless. Any recos on a not too pricey 600 cfm hood?

It is hard to know where to start here. The flow rate (cfm) is determined by the uprising velocity of the cooking plume effluent and the aperture area of the hood, and not to first order by the BTUs. I would start at 90 times the area in square feet. Baffles will not separate grease from the air at really slow air speeds, so if one intends to go as low as possible, then a mesh that is routinely cleaned is probably better. However, mesh hoods typically have undersized apertures, so capture is degraded at the hood periphery. In other words, the hood is smaller than listed. Baffles will at any speed provide fire blocking, their other purpose. All fans have fan curves, including those made from magic lungs. The fan curve plots flow rate versus pressure drop across the fan, which results from duct friction, duct transition flow disruptions, mesh or baffle restriction, lack of MUA, etc. Typical fan curves are slightly convex, with cfm on the abscissa and pressure on the ordinate. When the pressure drop reaches some maximum, such as an inch or two of water column, the flow reaches zero. At zero pressure drop, the flow is (should be) the rated flow. The pressure drop is never zero in situ. VAH may be counting fan and hood, which can also be the rating used by some others at some times. It depends on whether the rating is for the hood with fan or for the fan only. The VAH rated flow certainly does not include the losses from the ducting and duct transition to the cap at the outside. Unfortunately, unless susceptible to a calibrated measurement, code enforcers will look at the fan rating and not actual flow for enforcing MUA rules. Ideally, they would test for negative house pressure vs. what combustion appliances present are not allowed to exceed without risking back-drafting. The relative loudness and ugliness of outside fans has to be compared to the relative social ugliness of loud inside fans. YMMV. I would not, however, duct to my neighbor's door. weissman: we've batted this around before. It's obviously an issue of what each of us considers acceptable, but it was our experience at the lake house with a 600 cfm VAH hood over a 5 burner PGM365 Dacor cooktop that pushed me to spec a 1200 cfm Fantech remote blower and a 64'' Modern Aire hood liner over the new Lacanche in our home kitchen renovation. If I sear hard over the 15,000 BTU burner on the Dacor (i.e. preheat pan for 5 minutes over maximum heat and then dump in meat or fish) I get smoke that temporarily overwhelms the VAH blower and spills into the kitchen. Since that's kind of how I like to cook, it was an issue for me. So, for me 600 cfm (or, per the VAH hype, "equivalent to 900 cfm with a conventional blower"--which I don't buy) was inadequate for even one burner when doing this kind of cooking. I'm hoping the 1200 cfm will be more effective (though now I have fan envy, as there is someone who has recently posted about his 2500 cfm blower--now there's a reason for makeup air!). yoyoma: Re the continuously variable speed control--it's an option I'd consider a must if you're spending this kind of money on a vent hood. Again, this is based on my experience with our VAH, which also has a 3-speed control. The main thing a continuously variable control gives me is the option to run at a very low cfm setting, say if I'm just cooking one pot of rice. The VAH is just so darn loud even at low that I wish I could run it slower. The sound issue is also obviously why I went with a remote attic-mounted fan and the Fantech LD10 silencer. The silencer is a popular option as I know of several installations where the LD10 was used even when the blower was from a different manufacturer. For example, one appliance dealer quoted me a Wolf hood system but with the Fantech silencer. Do beware of the good point paddy 99 makes. I know that I'm going to get significantly less than 1200 cfm given a 20' duct run and the silencer, as well as one 90 degree turn. I did consider going even higher but at least with Fantech blowers it would have necessitated going to an even larger duct size which I did not have the room to use. BTW, I assume you're aware that it's important to use the largest ducting possible, typically 10'' size. And, as for yoyoma's choice of the Independent liner--it is by all reports a very high quality unit. My only issues with it revolves around the limited number of blower options. Their website makes it sound like you have to use their blowers. That makes sense with an in-hood unit, but I'm not sure that's really true if you're using a remote blower, which I think is the superior option. My guess is that you could use other remote blowers without problems, which would allow you to 1) use a fan with a continuously variable speed control and 2) choose an attic-mounted fan rather than a roof-mounted unit, which is what I think the Independent CFMR1400 that they sell appears to be. Issues with roof mounts are: 1) difficulty in installing (particularly with a multistory house and/or a steeply pitched roof) 2) Potential risk of roof leaks once you punch through it with the ductwork 3) Wear and tear to the fan due to 24/7 exposure to the elements on the roof versus in a protected attic. I had a 600 cfm downdraft installed behind a 30 inch gas cooktop & it seems to work fine. The HVAC guy that did the install raised his eyebrows at 600cfm as it really is quite a bit of air moving. (as a comparison a 1200cfm fan is adequate as a "whole house fan" in a 1500 square foot home). The HVAC guy's first concern was the house (1700 sqft) going to negative pressure when the fan is used. Negative pressure in the house is why local coding kicks in...with negative pressure your gas water heater exhaust gases flow into the house rather than out. If you have a fireplace then you could reverse the flow of any smoke/CO/CO2 from the chimney and pump the gases into your home. I had an outside makeup air vent with a barometric controller installed as a part of the DD vent install(an extra $280). I also had the 6 inch connection to the vent increased to 8 inch pipe for the entire run through the basement (8 inch moves twice as much air as 6 inch pipe) & this helps retain (not reduce) the cfm rating of your blower. The 8 inch was reduced to 6 inch just before we vented to the outside. Once the vent was in I tested whether the house went negative pressure with the vent on...even with the external makeup air installed the house is just barely positive pressure. Had I not installed the external makeup air the vent would have taken me VERY negative in pressure. I have a gas hot water heater, furnace, and run a woodstove(burn air is external) for winter heat. Positive pressure in your house is good...it'll keep you alive. You may want to discuss your vent cfm sizing & it's impact on the whole house with an HVAC person.

Juniork--OP said 1000cfm, not 100. I'm trying to find the right hood for a Capital Culinarian 36" rangetop. I have thought about a VAH, but have second thoughts with many bad reports of their noisiness and difficulty of cleaning. Some of the noise issues may be because of ducting issues, but I'm not sure I want to take that chance. Kobe has a solid reputation over on the Appliance Forum. Have you done any research over there? Warning, you may become even more confused if you read too much about venting like noise, internal blowers, online blowers, make-up air, etc. Speaking of make-up air, have you checked your local codes to see if you'll need it? My local code requires it for any hood with 400 cfms or more. I would recommend the Kobe for the baffle filter, quietness, and higher cfms. With higher cfms, you won't have to turn the hood on as high to get the venting you need most of the time. Lower speed equals less noise.

I've been reading lots of posts and see that you have lots of info that you've shared. That said, I'm wondering if you think there is another all gas range I should consider, keeping in min that 3k is already pushing it for me budget wise. i certainly care about looks, but function and reliability are also important. An lp range would be ideal instead of one I have to convert. Also curious if you know of any hoods? I never knew how complicated this would be! It makes me terrified to make the wrong choice and end up with a lemon. Also wondering if most of the models are counter depth or do I need to make sure the depth works for my 30 inch wide, 25.5 deep spot?

Excluding super premium hoods, the ideal size you want is 36" wide and 24" deep. Depth being more important that width. Those 20-22" deep hoods don't really cover the smoke and grease rising from the front burners.

Deeageaux, you just totally burst my bubble. The past three days I've been narrowing down my rangehood selection and I was feeling really good about the Kobe under cabinet CH-191SQB-1. Powerful, quiet, newer LED lighting, looks are ok although wife prefers a more classic pro-canopy look versus the sleeker slightly more modern look of that particular Kobe.

Then I read you post above regarding depth. I quickly check and lo and behold, every Kobe ( I looked at 6-7 models, every under cabinet and even several wall mounts that can be under cabinet as well) is only 22" depth. Is this a deal breaker? It seems like a critical thing to me as the most powerful and frequently used burners are on the front.

My cooktop with be a 36" 6 burner rangetop, brand not 100% decided but likely Bluestar.

I'll have to go back to the drawing board on this selection I guess.

Are under cabinet and 24" deep.

I have a 36" Culinarian range with a 42" x 24" deep hood in a galley kitchen. I absolutely would not want a shallower hood. If I had a big open kitchen I would have gone with a 42" x 27" hood.
