If you're willing to shop ebay, there are dozens of reasonably priced vent hoods. Our range dealer
warned us upfront about the type of vent required with each range we looked at, so we could adjust the budget accordingly. :)

kobe has several hoods that meet your needs

Just stay away from the Broan Allure line. There's been good things said about the Best by Broan line, but that's upper end. The Allure III is a waste of money - it can't even handle my Kenmore/Whirlpool range with a 14.5K burner.

I got mine on ebay. Glass and stainless island vent hood. works well, looks great. pretty reasonable on ebay.

Thanks for the warning. The hood was recommended to us when we were thinking of purchasing the kitchen aid AG range. I will stay clear of it.

pharaoh, I saw the vent hood on e-bay, but they all said island vent hood. I need one to attach to the wall or undercabinet. Would the island vent hood be able to attach to wall?

Sorry, I overlooked the link. I went and followed it. I did fine one that was a chimney vent hood. What do I need to look for to see if it will work? We currently have a cabinet that hides the duct. We can take out the cabinet. The question is with the duct system. Currenlty it vents to the outside. Our set up now is: It goes straight up through the cabinets and then make a 90 degree angle to the left for about 4-5 to vent outside.

mis3hijos -- Like you, I need to turn a 90 deg corner with the vent in my new kitchen, so I'm buying this style of hood and mounting cabinets over it (see link below). If you need a larger vent and it's too tall for cabinets, you can put up a fascia board to hide the pipe going into the side of your upper cabinets.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am having an American Range tech out tomorrow and I am going to have him look at my venting system and hope he can guide me to what will work. This vent hood is overwhelming. I measured our current duct and it is 6" wide (round duct) and it goes about 32" straight up and then turn to the left for about 62" to the outside wall to vent out. Could I install a chimney style vent hood and take out the cabinet? Also, what should I be looking for in terms of dimensions. I know I need a 30 Wide vent hood, but should I get a 24" depth so it will cover my front burners? So many questions. Also I found a vent hood on e-bay, but it says 800CFM, would that be too much for the current duct system I have? As you can tell, I'm so new to this whole issue. The most important question, will my current duct system work for a vent hood that is 600cfm.

You need to check the specs for whatever hood you order to see what size duct is required. As for hood depth, from what I've read here you need a deep hood if you do a lot of serious cooking or if you have a grill on your range, (I don't, I'm a lame cook) so you may want to search the forum for info. There are 600CFM hoods that work with 6" duct but most of them require 8" ducts.

When using a residential commercial range, it is very important that the hood covers the front burners. It is also very important that the hood is no more than 32" above the cooking surface. This will give you best performance. A 6" round duct for 600 cfm is ify at best, but when you add a duct run with a 90 degree turn, I see no way your present set up will work. Sorry for the bad news, but I know you want to know this now rather than later. Best suggestion would be, going to an 8" round or equivalent duct. Best of luck.

Thanks for your feedback regarding my hood vent. How would I convert my 6" duct to an 8"? Also, what do I do about the turn. I have an upstairs bedroom that is located over the area of the range. Behind the range is a dining area.
The american range guy recommended a vent a hood, but said most would require an 8" duct. I'm assuming I measured right. I put a tape measure and measured the diameter. I would rather get it right the first time. The tech did say to get a hood that would suck up all the smell, grease etc.

Replacing the existing duct work is a big deal. As I said before, there are 600 CFM hoods that work with 6" ducting - that would be your best and least expensive option at this point. Is it a perfect solution - no - but it is a reasonable solution. I was in a similar situation - I have a 600 CFM hood with a 6" duct over my DCS 30" gas range. It is quite powerful enough - the only drawback is that it is only 19" deep so some stuff escapes the front of the hood. I occasionally have to clean some grease off the front of the hood. Not a big deal.

What kind of vent hood do you have?

I have a DCS Eurohood but it's the older model - I think the current model requires an 8" duct. Kobe and some others do make 6" ducting hoods - you'll have to do some searching around. For some reason, the ones that work with 6" ducts seem to be less deep than the 8" ones. One thing you can do is bump it out from the wall a little so it covers the front burners better.

I found a rangehood on e-bay. It works with a 6" duct and it's highest cfm is 800 (so they say). It is UL 30" STAINLESS STEEL KITCHEN RANGE CHIMNEY VENT HOOD (#260231232064). Do you think that this may work. What are your thoughts. I trust your judgment.

I took a look on ebay - it doesn't say what brand it is - I tried a web search on the model number and nothing came up except that ebay page!

Personally, I'd be a little wary about buying a non-brand item on ebay unless you can get confirmation from someone who has that particular model hood and is happy with it. What if it needs service - who will deal with that. Maybe you can get more information from the seller. Personally, I would go with a known brand.

The major problem is that a 6" duct may work for Weissman, but I bet he does not have a 90 degree turn in his duct run. With each 90 degree turn, you loose about 25-40% of your available power. Trust me, it will not work worth a darn. Replacing ducting is a pain in the you know what, but it is probably your only option if you want a hood that will do the job. Other suggestion is not to get that particular range and get one with a bit less BTU's.

Take a look at the Zephyr brand of range hoods. They have hoods in the 600 cfm category, 6'' ducting, reasonably priced.

I bought a Zephyr Typhoon (showroom model) off eBay for $150 delivered. Will be a few months before it's installed so I can't give you a user opinion yet. However, several GW'ers have Zephyrs & are happy with them.
