Sometimes it just doesn't work out....

While I'm no chef, the food I cook is usually highly...edible. I don't follow recipes, but I like to use them as inspiration. Last night I just got a taste for pea soup, and visualized a colorful, warming bowl with stuff I already had on hand.

I chopped a red onion and sauteed it until it was nice and soft and sweet, but still a lovely pink. I poured in yellow split peas, a little bit of better-than-bouillion and cooked it for a bit. I added some carrot slices, and then some slips of kale and cooked it a little bit more.

It was gorgeous! Bright, vibrant colors -- exactly what I envisioned, and that doesn't happen often.

Unfortunately it smells like feet, and I'm afraid to take a taste! The soup I made a few weeks back with onions, green peas and neckbone and less thought than this was fabulous, altho' it looked like baby food.

Sigh. Makes me glad I'm just cooking for myself!

I'm laughing out loud here! Some very good cheese smells like feet. It could be fabulous!

You think it is the carrots ? I had to switch to organic carrots, the others just taste like quap.

Wow, what a lot of really great ideas for me . . .and for all of us here. Thank you!!! I'm following a lot of it and have lost 12 pounds so far. Mainly by cutting out most carbs and white sugar,and as Kelly suggested, doing interval training. I'm also keeping bags of fresh, pre washed baby carrots, baby bell peppers and green beans to munch on when I get hungry. Last night we grilled out burgers and I had mine without the bun. It's getting easier to eat like this and I'm finding the cravings for sweets and cheese are becoming less with each day . . . thankfully! As I mentioned in an earlier post here, I wasn't vastly overweight, just at the tops of what my weight should be for my height and age. Now I'm 12 pounds lighter and my clothes fit so much better! I'd still like to drop another 8 pounds. We fly out this Thursday morning to Palm Beach and then on to the Tampa area 4 days later. I've already eaten dinner and lunches out several times since I started this weight loss drive and have found it pretty easy to eat out healthfully . . . as long as it's in a regular and not a fast food restaurant. Salads with grilled meats, nuts, etc. are my go-to's, with a lite salad dressing on the side; hold the croutons and bread sides (LOL). But, as always, I have to be so careful that "lite" doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners, as I'm extremely allergic to them, especially aspertame/aspartame. So many thanks for all the great, helpful ideas. I'll continue to read them, although I'm not sure if I'm taking my laptop with me to Florida yet. Lynn

Depending on the demarc between the POCI and the house, the meter enclosure very well may be the responsibility of the owner. Sometimes the demarc is at the weather head splice, while others places use the meter enclosure itself. If the demarc is at the weather head the owner is responsible for the drop to the meter base. If the demarc is at the meter enclosure the POCO usually handles their side, while the homeowner handles the load side. If a bad POCO connection damaged the meter base they should replace it and it is the demarc If a load side connection damaged the meter base it is on the homeowner. Overloading of the connection would have tripped the main breaker. That is one of its purposes (the other is faults in the panel itself). If you have NOT tripped the main breaker the fault is likely a loose connection. Once they become loose it goes down hill from there. The loose connection gets hotter and can cause arcing, further damaging the connection till it fails completely. A load side failure usually results in loosing one leg, killing the 240 V loads and leaving half the 120 V loads working fine. A line side failure does the same thing, but if the broken connection touches the meter enclosure it can blow a POCO line fuse and create a lot of fireworks at the meter enclosure. Either way, have it fixed and then try and lean on the POCO for reimbursement if they should have done the work.

Thank you all. I did try, as Randy suggested, readjusting the collar, but never could make the flapper fall consistently. I guess the chain lifting it shifted it slightly with every use until it was cockeyed. I didn't put the silicone grease on it (forgot to buy it) but I think I should have some around anyway so I'll get some. What I ultimately did, and what seems to be working for the moment at least, was to buy a Flushmaster kit, yank out the the old chrome one that was in there, and follow the instructions: clean, clean, clean, dry, orient unit, press firmly, hook up chain. The old one was in the toilet 40 years ago when we moved in here, and if this one survives half that long it'll outlast me! The kit doesn't depend on the collar on the overflow tube but has the "ears". It's an integral unit so the fit should be good. I'm a little wary of plastic, but when it's good it's good, it cost $7.22 @ Big Box Store, and if it saves us wrestling that valve out of there I won't complain! I really appreciate the help and suggestions- you guys are great.

Could it have been the kale? I think it is a member of the cabbage family?

That's why I make split pea and HAM soup....the lovely aroma of smoked ham when it's cooking.

I think it's the kale...really good for you but it can have a pong. Add a dash of vinegar and see if that neutralizes it.

I'll try the vinegar, but I think this may just be a wash.

Of course, disposing of a big Le Cruset Dutch oven full of soup is no easy matter!

I'm guessing the kale also, even quappy carrots wouldn't smell like feet I don't think. You do have to be brave and taste it - maybe it doesn't taste as bad as it smells! I'd freeze it in small portions and once in a blue moon defrost one and add it to a batch of stew or some other soup where the flavor will be hidden by some other strong flavors like garlic and beef?

Or maybe just dump it if its really that awful :( Just trying to think of some ideas for you :)

i also guess you are smelling the cabbagey smell of the kale....taste it...it will be fine! perhaps add 2 drops ( no more!!) of liquid smoke....and Iw ouldn't add vinegar, but rather fresh lemon juice.

Well, I divided it and tried both options, the vinegar and the lemon juice. (I like sour-ish tastes!)

The vinegar did mask the smell a bit, but the lemon added a bit in terms of taste.

While the taste wasn't as bad as the smell implied -- it still wasn't great. Took two trips to flush it, but the Dutch oven is ready for the next experiment!

I'm thinking kale and cabbage soup from Epicurious. (My incentive is to use this lovely Lacinanto Kale I got this weekend.)

Just chop that kale, put it into a pot with a little bacon grease and cook it...add a bit of vinegar and eat it up...
Then go on and cook some stuff without having to worry about that darn kale!
You already spoiled a pot of pea soup....don't ruin anything else....just cook the damn stuff choke it down and be done!
