I like spinach, well seasoned and oniony as a side with it...and I feel as if I grew up with hotdogs sliced into it. Could you have just a blurt of ketchup? to ease the withdrawal????

We usually just serve mac and cheese with some salad and call it a meal (okay, sometimes a glass of wine, too!).

I like broccoli with it and my folks always have mac and cheese with fish cakes and stewed tomatoes (must be that meatless Friday thing :)

I think of broccoli cause it seems like a natural veggie that you would put some cheese sauce on top, so maybe any dark green veggie would suffice. Maybe a spinach salad with a little sweet/sour dressing to give you that spicy sweet element without tomatoes? Or maybe a selection of colorful roasted veggies, since you'll have the oven on already.

Woodie, you know that sounds like a good dinner for later this week...mac and broccoli. Thanks for the suggestion! (I'll pass on stewed tomatoes tho.)

Well, we usually don't have the mac n cheese as our main dish but we like to eat it with hamburgers as a side or with a ham steak and some veggies. Usually corn or broccoli, but its always my favorite part.

I'm stuck in a rut with mac & cheese--have to have stewed tomatoes with it. I have GERD too but find tomatoes don't bother me but "red sauce" has me suffering all night.

If broccoli gives you "gas" you may find you have to stay away from it for your evening meal-- or eat it early in the day.

I, too, think leafy greens, either as a salad or sauteed with garlic would be good. If you want something cold with the mac and cheese, I'd go with a good mixed green salad, like a mesclan mix, with a light vinaigrette dressing of some kind. Broccoli would be good, too. When I have it, I usually have something like black beans or black eyed peas, in addition to the greens.

Mustard or collard greens with sauteed onions in olive oil, salt and lots of cayenne is a favorite of ours.
When in a hurry I use the canned greens.

I like a tossed salad with most pasta meals. I always think of pasta as 'heavy', and a salad makes a nice, refreshing counterfoil to it. Some garlic or herb bread for the mopping up also goes down well!

I usually serve mac n cheese with pork (ribs, roast) So usually it's broccoli or if ribs coleslaw.

Wow! Lots of good ideas. We have frozen broccoli in the fridge. I'll give the combination a try when I make mac & cheese this week. I usually barely thaw the broccoli with a little water in a covered sauté pan and then drain the water, turn up the heat, and finish it with a bit of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt.

msazadi - I've followed DW's example in cutting way back on, rather than completely eliminating, problematic foods. Catsup is a good example. Instead of slathering my cheese steak with catsup, as I did in the good old days, I used just enough to taste that it was there when I made them for lunch today. And I will probably try a slice of Jersey tomato on a burger this summer.

I like to have mac and cheese with ham, applesauce and greenbeans. Or baked beans are good with it too.I have been known to toss bits of ham and broccoli in it. When the kids were little it was hot dogs, baked beans and macaroni and cheese. My mom always made it for cookouts since it was the gks favorite. She would have hamburgers hot dogs calico bean bake, mac and cheese, coleslaw, green salad devilled eggs... etc. etc... Sue

Because of this thread, we had mac n cheese with chicken fingers and ........... BROCCOLI...lol oh and a quick batch of homemade BBQ sauce for dipping.

We always had mac and cheese as a side, as well, and normally with meatloaf and a salad or green beans.

I had reflux a few years back and after diet and medicine, it is gone now. I know that diet stinks. I could have no chocolate, mint, tomato, peppers, onion, citrus, or spices that might set it off. I hope you fully recover, too.

I usually make Mac n cheese with some kind of chicken wing thingy. It's good with ham too!

Wow, broccoli seems to be the veggie of choice. That is what we usually have with our mac&cheese. That or steamed brussel sprout. I like them roasted also. NancyLouise
