I use mine that way. I have a standard waffle maker, not the belgian type. The standard ones are pretty hard to find these days. Mine is a Toastmaster brand that stands on it's side for storage. I found a similar one at my local Target that I bought for my sister for Christmas this year. I think it was in the $20-$30 range. I made a double batch yesterday and put the extras in the fridge since we have a 3 day weekend. To reheat I just pop them in the toaster and they come out great. I have also frozen them 2 to a ziploc baggie and they toast just fine from frozen. I just wipe down the non-stick plates with a damp cloth and it seems to stay seasoned and non-stick.

I've been doing a little online shopping and finding that most of the higher rated ones are round. Hmmm. Round would have to be small enough to fit in my toaster, which is small for a waffle. A lot of them are not very well rated, with issues that I find with most electric appliances--carp heating elements, cheap parts that break and melt/overheat, and nonstick coating coming off.

I'd hit the thrift shops and ebay.

I make them ahead and pop them in the toaster, too. I have a classic-type waffle iron. Mine is a VillaWare purchased long ago from WS. The one they carry now has many more bells and whistles.

We like them better after they have been frozen and then reheated in the toaster, they crisp up. Right out of our waffler maker they are soft and a bit bready. We toast from a frozen state. When I freeze them I put them in a round container, stacked with a paper towel between each one to absorb any steam moisture.

Actually my favorite waffles are from the VillaWare heart waffle maker. They are thin and have a nice outer crispness. I should break down and finally buy one. :)

I use Whole Wheat Flour in my Waffles and freeze them , double bag them to freeze.
They are great heated in the toaster oven.
I keep a Water Sprayer for plants handy, if they are overcooked, a little.

Pancakes and Waffles Recipe

2 ½ cups milk ( IÂve been using powdered milk)
2 eggs ( separated ) .
1/3 cup of Veg. Oil
2 tablespoon of Vanilla
Pinch of salt
½ cup Sugar
1 cup of Wheat Flour
4 teaspoons Baking Powder
All Purpose flour ?

I beat the egg whites first , so I donÂt have to clean the beaters.
Beat the egg whites with a teaspoon of sugar, until peaked.
Put aside until the batter is mixed

Batter for Pancakes
Put the first 6 ingredients ( except egg whites ) in a mixing bowl and beat until smooth.
Put in the Wheat flour, Baking Powder. and some All Purpose flour.
Beat until smooth. Add enough AP flour to thicken slightly,
(were it leaves ripples while mixing ) not thin and loose.

Add ½ the egg whites, at a time , to the batter and fold in easy.
For Waffles:
Thicken more, to where you have to move it around with a spoon,
when it is put on the Waffle Baker.
Then do the egg white thing as in the pancake batter.
When baked I cool them fast on a rack and put them in a plastic bag,, separated
and right in the freezer.
If you overcook a little, dampen slightly with water,
before you put them in the toaster oven.
I have a very old round Waffle Baker with adjustable heat Range.
It makes a Waffle about ½ inch + thickness. For me this is just right,
for the amount of butter and syrup that you can put on top.
I found a Cuisinart mod.WMR-CA at Macy's $28 .It matches my old Wafflebaker
Now I can make Waffles in Stereo .

DonÂt use the Belgium Waffle Maker, any more, because itÂs too much Waffle for the amount of syrup and butter. But may be good for you.!
If I want a Belgium Waffle, I just make a double decker and
put fruit or whatever filling in between.
Then you have more cooked surface area , on the Waffles.
Which is where most of the flavor is ( the cooked surface )

I toast waffle wedges. You make the whole round waffle and break it on it's lines into 4 wedges..fits in the toaster perfectly.

I have to be careful, I have a vintage toaster, extra thick stuff does not fit in it. The eggo waffles were just the right thickness, but any thicker would have been a bust. I am keeping the toaster due to the quality of toast it makes, and that is due to the quality of the heating element. It has a CLOTH cord, lol! It is 70 years old hand me down from my great aunt, who gave it to my mom for her first apartment. It was retired from my folks house when they switched to a toaster oven, but I still prefer a toaster for "toast."

I do not do eBay and am not about to start, wonderful as I know it is. I do peruse the thrift shops but have not been looking for waffle irons at this point. I am going to check at "Mom's Hand Me Down" shop. I have gotten some really great appliances from there, lol!

I did that when I had a Toaster and still do it with the Toaster Oven ( heat 2 pieces at a time )
That way they don't cool down.

I also have the Villaware waffle iron, which I bought a few years ago at Tuesday Morning. If you have one in your area, it would be worth looking, as mine was under $20. I started with the heart waffles that barnmom linked to, but didn't like them as they were difficult to put in the toaster. (I've since relegated it to making crispy waffle hash browns, so it doesn't go to waste. That's the perfect use for it, since it fits my round breakfast dishes.) I agree that Belgian waffles are entirely too thick.

After discovering that didn't work for me, I found the iron that makes waffle sticks. It's much like the larger 4-segment waffle iron, but easier to store. I can toast three sticks at a time, which is perfect for breakfast. I also toast waffles from frozen, and no one can ever believe how good my home-made waffles are. (My favorite recipe is for raised yeasted waffles.) Square waffles make more sense for toasting, especially if you can make four at a time for doing a double batch for the freezer. Nonstick irons are also easier to use. Whatever you can find, it's a great idea. You'll love having home-made waffles in the freezer.

The one I found for my sister at Target was never on their website. I had trouble trying to find one like mine online. I stumbled on it at Target while looking for something else. I am pretty sure it is this Chefmate.

I got a President's Choice Belgium waffle iron as one of my Christmas presents. Used it a few times and it actually worked very well. Me too, only make waffles on a Sunday and freeze the rest for the week.

That's not too thick for a toaster.

I had an older Wafflebaker that made thinner waffles but they baked too crisp.
It made rectangle shaped Waffles.
The older one pictured above is a Toastmaster.

If you see one at " Mom's Hand Me Downs " grab it.
I like the older one better.

lpink, I have the cuisinart one that is on the left in Lou's photo. Seems to be easy to clean (after the first use when the waffle stuck something awful...just need to be "primed" I guess?)

Anyay, even though they are round, I break them in half and the go into my regular toaster pretty much - with just a little tip showing. I pop them out, and put that point down and retoast a little....works well. I totally do what you want to do - freeze and then toast.

I had the waffle iron that Lou shows on the right, but it died :( I really liked the waffles it made better than my new one, they were just the thickness I liked. Thought sure I got my waffle recipe from Lou also, but I see it is not the same. I guess next time I make waffles I'll have to try his recipe.

Sometimes the elements burn off, inside, at the connection terminal nut.
If you know someone who is a little handy, the cover can be opened and the wire reattached.

Then sometimes it is just a broken wire in the cord,. It can be tested.

Get to know someone handy, like me !!! Then pay them with
Waffles.

The only thing I changed ( I think ) is folding in the beaten Egg Whites and subbed some WW Flour.

Anyway, they are Lighter and Crispier but Tender.

I usually make sure the light goes out( if there is one ),
before I put the Batter in.

When I get a new appliance like a Pizzelle Baker or a
Wafflebaker, etc.,
I put in some sliced bread coated with Oil ( not Pam )to cover the cooking area.
Then close the cover and let it rip.

Take the bread out and feed it to the deer.

Then I put in some dampened paper towels and steam it.

This will remove any fabricating oils, if there is any and usually stops it from sticking.

Put a few drops of Veg. oil on a pastry brush and lay a thin coat over the plates.

Alton, good old Alton, had a show on this not long ago. About the only thing I remember is 1) don't buy the double waffle maker which flips over doing two at one time - can't get hot enough and 2) stay away from cheapies.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to see if I can multi-purpose it like people (and Alton) say - do my hashbrowns in and 'fry' bacon in it. Like you, the appliances are getting on my nerves and overflowing the kitchen. Now it has to be something really worth it.

I have two waffle makers, one makes a rectangle waffle made up of 6 squares (it also converts to a contact grill) and the other makes heart shaped waffles.
I quadruple the recipe and that is usually enough for dinner and breakfast the next morning. My kids can eat a lot of waffles. LOL

I think I was freezing my waffles before Eggo LOL ! I use the classic square waffle iron. You get 4 waffles at a time that way. I tear them into individual squares, lay them (2) side by side and use wax paper square in between. That way they don't stick together. Ex. 2 waffles then lay sheet down, 2 waffles on top of that, fold the sheet over 2 waffles on that. Then a new square of wax paper and start over. Store in a zip lock. If they are going to last a while (they don't here) double bag in zip locks or vacuum seal. We also toast right from the freezer. They are nice and crisp and ready for the butter to melt in. And the squares fit in a toaster better then wedges will.
And you will save a ton of money.

Alton was down on the square waffle irons, due to the heat distribution or something, but I like them for toasting. Yes, I know I can break up the other kind. I am very limited with my toaster. It is only big enough for toast made from a small piece of bread. Also the waffle irons I like, that seem to be the most heavy duty for the square waffles, are for the Belgian kind, which I think might not fit in my toaster.

Here are the ones I'm thinking about getting:

Cucina Pro 1452 Belgian 4 square waffle iron

Those were the only ones I could find that seemed to have sufficient electric juice and heavy duty cast aluminum "irons" and also a non-stick finish that didn't wear off. Most of the cheap nonstick stuff I get wears off and I really don't like that, not to mention that the "non-stick" part pretty much becomes non existent at that point. I think they're all going to make too big of waffles though, but I can reheat them in the oven I guess. I'm not really ready to buy a new toaster, and I don't really have much room for one. I really love my retro one, but it is really not good for much else but toast.

They do sell a non electric real iron one, but I dunno, sounds like a recipe for me to burn myself or melt something in the kitchen. Maybe someday when I get my dream woodburning stove and I can just shove it around any old where.
