Discovered a great new liqueur

I've been meaning to post about this since Christmas. I got it as a present for DH.

St-Germain liqueur, made in France from elderflowers. You wouldn't believe how much depth of flavor it has. And it comes in a beautiful bottle. The web site is cool too. There are cocktail recipes. I like it straight best, though. It's not too sweet. Very, very nice.

Thanks Cloudy! DH is in France as we speak - I've emailed him to look for some to bring home. Our friends are Alpaca farmers - Elderberry Farm Alpacas - so hopefully he can find it an dbring some for them, too!

Stacy, it's easy to get it here too. Even our Pennsylvania state stores have it.

Fig Balsamic vinegar. This stuff is great for dipping rustic breads as well as great over vanilla ice cream. We gave it away as Xmas gifts and everyone we gave it to is raving. I bought it locally at a gourmet food store. Also, I recently discovered LaTortilla Factory whole grain tortillas. Yummy! We have a panini maker and use it occasionally. I love this recipe for all panini sandwiches. It turns a bland panini into a special sandwich. I know it is measured by oz. I just guess. It is wonderful! Balsamic-Mustard Vinaigrette Combine in a blender: 4 oz. balsamic vinegar 4 oz. vegetable oil 1 oz. Beaver brand sweet and hot mustard 1/2 oz. Italian seasoning 1/4 oz. red pepper flakes Blend on medium to high for 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer to a squeeze bottle for applying to bread and seasonal greens. Remainder may be kept in an airtight container for two to three weeks.

Most recent find was red savina pepper powder. I was ordering garden seed for spring and they had powder for sale. Not as good as fresh peppers but it has merit. Using it on my hamburgers and in my soups. LOL... website mentions that it is not for sale to minors. I like a fair amount of heat but the red savina has a fruity flavor I enjoy in my lentil or black & kidney bean soups. It can't replace the fresh cayenne I grow in my window but winter has crimped production of those. I saw chocolate bars with cayenne pepper in them. Sounded rather nuts so of course I tried one. Now I'm addicted to them. I've shared them around the breakroom at work with positive comments from those brave enough to try them (really not very hot). Got serious with my black pepper this year. I have always put lots of black pepper on most of my food. I got on the Penzey's site and ordered some of everything as whole peppercorns. Crush them a few at a time with a mortar and pestle. Found I really like the cheaper malabar peppercorns.... a sharper more intense bite then the tellicherry. Really gave a nice boost to my cooking in general. I was buying pretty good black pepper but the fresh crushed peppercorns outshine even the best ground I can buy locally. What I really need is to find a good source of coffee. Tempted to start roasting my own. With Renee gone I just sort of drink cup after boring cup of stuff that is similar to coffee. : ) lyra Here is a link that might be useful: powerful pepper powder

Those jars are great - I'm rethinking some of the things I might plan for the holidays now. I've made purchases from there, but products directly related to garden work. I'm going to have to check out the kale stripper for every day kitchen use, whatever gets that balanced meal on the table quicker ;)

I live in NYC and had been staying in my apartment up until a few days ago when I finally ventured out to get some fresh air and walk through a park near my apt. I was surprised to see many people without masks. Even tonight, after Cuomo said people must wear masks if they can't socially distance themselves, I saw people without masks. There is no way to socially distance yourself in the city. I'm wearing a mask but my glasses fog up. IDK how to solve that problem. But to answer the question, I was going out onto my fire escape for fresh air before this and there are many more birds in the area behind my building. I was thrilled to see cardinals, bluejays and robins. Before I lived in the city I was a backyard birdwatcher, so this made me very happy. They are probably always there, but with the new silence in the city they are more noticeable, you can hear them singing. I had a sparrow peeking in my window checking out my parakeet the other day, so funny! More creatures are comfortable coming out in the city with less people around. This is Riverside Park. This stuff makes the BEST margaritas. Seriously, you'll never go back to using triple sec once you try St Germain with your (aged, 100% agave) tequila & fresh lime juice

I love the bottle, too. Looks like a big bottle of Eau de Cologne.

Hey, if we're talking booze...Not new but IMO unappreciated is Licor 43. It's a vanilla liquer that's great over ice, ice cream or used in baking.

We just placed our order for KeKe Beach Key Lime Liqueur, which makes a great Key Lime martini.

Now I will have to call to see if they carry St. germain and Licor 43. I think my liquor store guy may start thingking I have a 'problem'. What-ev-er!

ooo key lime! DH bought lemoncello and me no likey [and it's the good stuff recommended by our Italian/Annual Italy visiting neighbor suggested] tastes like lemon scotch to me ew.

My recent fav is Cuarenta y Tres i.e. 43. it's fruit and fragrant herbs, including vanilla and citrus. Cool for sipping, probably great for cooking.

It is AWESOME!

My little old neighbor lady introduced me to it a few months ago and it is VERY tasty. Interestig story too.

Another one that I like a lot is Glayva. If you know a scotch drinker (especially if they lie Rusty Nails) they they are sure to love this stuff too!

Thanks for the heads-up on this liqueur. I'm going to search it out.

Nina - thanks for the tip on making margaritas with it too. Sounds like my kinda drink!

Pat- the margarita recipe is in the little booklet that comes along with the St Germain. They are fabulous.

Of course, I told my husband about this thread so he stopped at the liquor store & brought home a new bottle of St Germain. This forum continues to be a bad influence!

Sands, thanks for the reminder that Licor 43 also goes by Cuarenta y Tres. That's probably essential info if you're ordering it as I'll be that's the "real" name.

Lol, I knew you could get it here - I looked it right up! But found that it's about $33.00/bottle - and if its as good as you say it is, it'll go fast! So DH is checking in France and duty free to see if it's cheaper. Chances are, it's not, but it'll give him something to do. :-)
