The Conversation side of the Home Decoration forum has a thread on what new or newly discovered products people are liking. Along with other items, they are enthusiastic about Cento plum tomatoes, Dalmatia Fig Spread, & especially Fage yogurt.

That's an interesting thread! I have heard of Fage yogurt but haven't tired it. I make my own yogurt so never get the store bought stuff. Never heard of Centro tomatoes or Dalmatia Fig Spread though. I don't even know if they are available in Canada. Al

The kids are in love with the Del Monte Chillers I cant stock enough in the back freezer. I love Jersey Best canned tomatos but they are hard to find but they are fantastic! Im loving Trader Joes jarred Salsa Verde!

Not at all Jackie. Potted, flowering plants aren't sold as something for you to actually plant. They are disposible, like a bunch of cut flowers. Some of the tags indicate they can be planted, but no aftercare instructions nor any growth size, flowering times, etc. are offered because those tiny pots of color are meant to be thrown away, just like the $10 bunch of roses at the grocery store. If YOU decide to put them in the ground, any issues are on you as the grower/creator had no real intentions of selling you a garden plant. Those are marketed as garden plant, not a spot of inexpensive color meant not to be grown on. Yes, many of the smaller potted roses sold in color are actually floribundas and sometimes HTs. When you see a four to six inch pot with two to three inch flowers, expect a larger plant with larger flowers. If the blooms are an inch and a half or smaller, chances are the plant may be smaller, too, but not guaranteed. You won't find background information on the majority of them because they aren't tested to determine that. They ARE tested to see how quickly and easily they root; how quickly they will produce a bushy flowering plant; under what conditions they can be produced to retain quality; how durable they are to handle and transport; how long they'll usually last under the boxed conditions, etc. Garden performance doesn't enter into the equation. You never get garden performance information on your florist azalea, hydrangea, etc. Usually, those aren't selected for garden performance, either, just as florist variety roses aren't. If we plant them, it's for the adventure of what we may get. Americans LOVE "pigs in a poke", the potential of getting something for nothing or nearly nothing. My client didn't care what size the roses might eventually get as they are whacked to the nubs regularly and perform as expected because they are mostly treated as they were tested to be treated. Cut to nothing regularly to create the dense, bushy flowering plant. If they start to get larger, someone mows them down, just as they did to propagate and produce them as the four inch pots they were. They were sold as potted color - rose, and that is all they were. If they perform differently than you expected when you "mis used" them, that's your fault. They gave you what was promised, a little spot of color - rose. Anything more is mis using them past what they were created, marketed and intended for. Kim

A very interesting article! I really hope they can find a suitable biofuel that can be quickly be put into use soon with the way the gas prices are climbing now! I saw on a TV show not long ago that at least one country in south america is almost exclusively useing biofuel made from sugarcane. I also read a recent newspaper article that mentioned someone was looking at the possibility of converting used coffee grounds into biofuel! Wouldn't that be interesting!

This letter to the journal Nature outlines the safety risk of antibiotic resistance due to horizontal gene transfer from GMOs and points out that this is not the only risk that needs to be urgently addressed by the authorities. ------ Ampicillin threat leads to wider transgene concern Sir: We are concerned by the suggestion, in your Editorial "Don't rely on Uncle Sam" (Nature 434, 807; 2005), that the US Food and Drug Administration does not consider the presence of the ampicillin-resistance gene in Syngenta's unapproved variety of genetically modified Bt10 maize to represent a safety problem. This is not the view of the UK government's scientific advisers (the DEFRA Antimicrobial Resistance Coordination Group), who state that some important veterinary pathogens remain susceptible to ampicillin (K. L. Goodyear et al. J. Antimicrob. Chemother. 54, 959; 2004). They state that there is "extremely low or no detected resistance in certain bacterial species", so that "any occasional transfer of resistance genes to these organisms would be a very significant event". If, as a result of such horizontal gene transfer, it became necessary to use more modern antimicrobials to treat animal disease, they write, "then there could be significant consequences for the consumer through the food chain". The risk of horizontal gene transfer from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is not a theoretical one. One study found that, after Bt genes in plasmid form were incubated in the saliva in a sheep's mouth for a few minutes, they could still transform Escherichia coli bacteria so that they developed antibiotic resistance (P. S. Duggan et al. Br. J. Nutr. 89, 159$B!](B166; 2003). In addition, it is worth noting that the ampicillin-resistance gene in Bt10 maize and other genetically modified crops is a remnant of the bacterial plasmid inserted into these varieties, and would therefore function very efficiently if taken up by bacteria as a result of horizontal gene transfer. Once the Bt10 maize incident has been dealt with, we feel there should be a review of the general question of horizontal gene transfer from GMOs. There is no reason to believe that any health implications are confined to antibiotic-resistance marker genes; they could, for example, equally apply to the inserted Bt toxin genes present in all genetically modified Bt crops. However, the transfer of antibiotic resistance is the only such risk currently being addressed by the authorities that regulate GMOs. We consider that the case-by-case approval approach used by the authorities does not adequately address such problems, which are common to all GMOs. Food Processor - Old Cuisinart, New Cuisinart, Used Robot Coupe?

I have both, a basic model Cuisinart made in Japan and a Robot Coupe made in France. Both vintage. Both machines are heavy duty and should be able to handle any duties required in the home. Interestingly the parts from the Cuisinart fit and work on the Robot Coupe but not vise-versa. I suggest that all parts and blades be washed by hand. Do not place these parts in the dishwasher. The heat of the dishwasher drying mode will weaken the plastic of the parts. Also be careful when twisting the lid on and off the bowl to prevent the locking/power engagement pin from breaking. Most importantly DON'T DROP IT! If you have a machine with a malfunctioning locking/power engagement pin you could manually depress the button using a pen or knitting needle. Be careful though as you no longer have the safety measures of the power engagement pin to protect you. The question about 3D printing your own bowl....This is not a viable solution for many reasons including: the plastic used has to be food safe. The bowl needs to be strong enough to handle the torque and stress of day to day use. And the plastic needs to be able to handle heat especially if you use the machine to puree hot items. Finding parts for these machines is difficult. Take good care of them and you should be enjoying your smoothies etc. For many many years. Happy cooking!

The best butter I have ever tasted. It is called Kate's homemade butter, or something close. It has sea salt in it. Need I say more? I found it in CT, on sale, at the Big Y.
It is not sold here in upstate NY. The website is rather cool,too.

I don't know if this is new, or if I've just never noticed it before but .... cinnamon chips. In the baking section where the chocolate chips are, they have cinnamon chips. I bought some and made some cookies using my normal chocolate chip recipe but substituted the cin chips. I will add that my normal chocolate chip recipe includes heath toffee chips.

Anyway, the combination of the cinnamon and heath chips made for a wonderful flavor. Dare I say it? Better than chocolate! OK, maybe not a lot better but certainly a contender!

Carol, I'll have to look for those mousse temptations and give them a try.

My newest favorite food product? Cream-nut peanut butter. Made here in Grand Rapids on the original machinery from the 1930s, it's got virginia peanuts and sea salt. Peanuts are roasted 300 lbs at a time and some from each batch is ground in a table top coffee grinder and tasted by the same guy that's been tasting for them for 39 years. It's sticky, peanutty and delicious.

I used to eat Fage yogurt almost every day but discovered that I have a sensitivity to milk protein (not sugar), which explains why most milk products bother my tummy. So, I cut back.

My favorite new discovery is Sabra hummus singles at Costco. The hummus is very creamy and the single-serve containers are convenient and help tremendously with portion control.

I don't know if it is new or not, but it is new to us. We just discovered peanut butter with honey in it. Dang. It takes peanut butter to a new level. And it is fantastic on Annie's maple oatmeal bread.

Sherry, I've been eating Peter Pan Honey Roasted since before they recalled it all a couple of years ago. I gotta tell you, I've replaced it with Cream-Nut. I like to mix a tablespoon of maple syrup into peanut butter too, and I recently saw maple peanut butter by Peanut Butter and Company. Here I thought I had an original idea!

I'm with you on the honey PB. I've been mixing honey in with the pb for awhile. I made mistake of giving some to LilyBeth, she has a peanut allergy and DD says no honey for her either. Bad Grammy!

Oh Cathy, the peanut allergy is harder, but if LilyBeth is over a year old, honey is fine. The health issue is infant botulism from honey, but older kids are OK. So it's not as bad, maybe, as it sounds.

Poor Lily, too, no peanut butter? That's sad, I LOVE peanut butter, even if it does have a weird texture.

Ohhhhhh yeah. I've been mixing peanut butter & honey since I was a kid. I'm sure it was my mother's idea way back then. I mix it up myself. I like a lo-o-ot of honey in there. It's actually one of my favorite toppings for matzo at Passover.

Trader Joe's flour tortillas - they are very fresh and do not contain preservatives and therefore have to be refrigerated the second day.

I bought a FoodSaver last year and it's already saving me money. I put the TJs tortillas in a resealable FS bag, and when it's sealed, the tortillas are rigid and flat - almost like a plate. I'm not thrilled about the resealable bags because they seem to leak a bit in a fairly short time, but I don't like having to lose 2" of the regular bags every time I reseal them. I do love the jar lid sealer, however, and that's my favorite attachment for it.

For tomatoes, I prefer 6-in-One brand, which is also the favorite at the pizza forum. I've bought Cento tomatoes before and like them, but they contain citric acid and therefore are not as sweet as 6-in-One.

I've bought a new Japanese seasoning mix that I haven't used yet: Yuzu Kochou ""Mera"". It contains red pepper, citron powder, and salt, and so I guess it will simply taste like lemon pepper with salt. I plan to add it to soups. It's odd to me that the seasoning mix is olive green in color, since red pepper is the first ingredient.

mustangs, you might want to ask if other nut butters are acceptable for your grandkids. Cashew butter is MUCH more delicious than peanut butter - and I love peanut butter!

We stopped by a Spanish grocery store nearby and discovered smoked anchovy filets. DH loves anchovies but we'd never tried smoked ones. Inexpensive (comparatively) and a nice change in his dinner salads.

I noticed flavored panko crumbs at the food market last time! flavors: creole, bbq, etc. Someone's jumping on the panko bandwagon. Reminds me of those pre-sliced onions in the meat counter for people who don't have time to slice an onion.

Ditto Adele on the tomato paste and one of my new favs is Barney Butter--Almond butter, it's like a Peter Pan or such. I too have a newly discovered peanut allergy and this allows me to have it by the spoon or spread on rice cakes. YUM!

Cathy, try that for Lilybeth, she'll love it and DD will approve. The only downside is the cost! Eeek! I get it at WF but they also have it online.

Goldgrl, I was also buying the hummus singles, great idea, but DH discovered that he likes Edamame hummus from T.J's. So I've been buying that on a regular basis.

Thanks for the almond butter tip. Years ago when I worked in LA, almond butter was one of the items in my carry on grocery bag...sure couldn't do that now.

I'm trying tomatoes in a cardboard box, imported from Italy. Will report back. I got turned on to Sabra hummus too, and it is a BAD addiction, it costs about 75 cents more than the other brands. I can't seem to EVER make decent homeade hummus. I don't know what they put in that Sabra stuff, it is far out good! Probably lots and lots of olive oil.

Not available everywhere, but you can check your local supermarket in the produce section: Bella San Luci Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto. Much easier to use than regular sun-dried tomatoes in oil, very tasty, relatively low in sodium (70mg for 1/4 cup, which is about all I usually use). Useful anywhere you'd use sun-dried tomatoes - dynamite in a dip made with Greek yoghurt. I use in stews, gravies, appetizers. Incredible dabbed over smoked mozzarella wrapped in phyllo fingers, then baked for a starter fit for company. Comes in a small narrow glass jar; really perks up an ordinary tomato sauce.

I keep hearing about tomato paste in a tube, but have not been able to find it around here. I think it would be a lifesaver. It seems I am repeatedly throwing out half-full tins of tomato paste which were lost in the back of the fridge.

susy, I finally found the tomato paste in a tube at the local Meijer's, of all places. I was astounded. I also bought Elery some anchovy paste in a tube.

JoJo beat me with Kate's butter, but I second the recommendation. I also love their Homemade Buttermilk which has no dyes, preservative or thickening agents in it.

Love it for baking, but also picked up a habit from my future DIL when she visited over the holidays. Mid-afternoon she has a glass of plain buttermilk as a snack. Said she began doing it at work (in Denmark) to keep sugar/snack cravings at bay and as a good way to get some calcium in her diet. It seems to be working for me, and I look forward to it. Kate's products are made in southern Maine, less than an hour from my home, but they just recently came to our local Hannaford supermarkets.

Chobani Greek yogurt is thick, creamy, yummy and available at BJ's. It comes plain or in single-size natural fruit flavors. It's far less expensive than Fage (at least around here.)

The brand of tomato paste & anchovy paste I have is Amore. Amazon.com has the tomato paste which can be ordered in one-, six-, or twelve-tube quantities.

Bangkok Blend spice seasoning from Penzey's. It's fabulous on chicken on the gril.

I have sun dried tomato paste and garlic paste in tubes, but I haven't used them yet!

And I never, ever expected them to be any good, but I bought a Pillsbury thin pizza crust in the tube and made a shortcut pissaladiere (minus the anchovies) to go with soup for dinner one night and it was very good. Not the same as homemade, but nothing is! But for the middle of the week after work, it'll be something I can use. I got a regular crust one that I didn't like as much - the thin crust was the one I was pleasantly surprised with.

Not only is tomato paste in a tube a life saver as Susytwo said, it tastes better than the canned paste.

I bought a different brand at GB Russo & Son market that Annie and Sherry took me to. I tasted tested that against Amore, and Amore was better.

When I got married, I always had an Italian salad w/anchovies for Sunday dinner. After 6 months, Raymond said "I don't like anchovies". I thought that was blaspheme, so I started using anchovy paste in a tube. After a few weeks he said "That's odd, I know you stopped using anchovies but I still taste them". After he learned to like them, I told him my trickthru> secret.

Our latest favorite, fairly new thing is the cook-your-own flour tortillas. Fresh off the griddle really ups our fajitas etc. They now have them at Costco, as well as in the deli section of our local grocery.

Not so much where I am but every time I cross the border (to the US) I hit the grocery stores. There is a lot more variety especially in the tex-mex and treats areas. My kids are "woo hoo" and my husband not so much. He doesn't love the junk food around so much.

The Archer Farms tortillas from Target, wheat and white, are
amazingly good and I will make an effort to keep them in my pantry. The whole wheat ones are the best I can recall ever having.

Cedar's Chickpea Salad, found at BJ's Wholesale Club.

And a couple of snack foods I've been eating for a year or so: Kettle Baked Chips and Food That Tastes Good Olive Tortilla chips.

I've been a fan of Fage yogurt for years.

Most recent find was red savina pepper powder. I was ordering garden seed for spring and they had powder for sale. Not as good as fresh peppers but it has merit. Using it on my hamburgers and in my soups. LOL... website mentions that it is not for sale to minors. I like a fair amount of heat but the red savina has a fruity flavor I enjoy in my lentil or black & kidney bean soups. It can't replace the fresh cayenne I grow in my window but winter has crimped production of those.

I saw chocolate bars with cayenne pepper in them. Sounded rather nuts so of course I tried one. Now I'm addicted to them. I've shared them around the breakroom at work with positive comments from those brave enough to try them (really not very hot).

Got serious with my black pepper this year. I have always put lots of black pepper on most of my food. I got on the Penzey's site and ordered some of everything as whole peppercorns. Crush them a few at a time with a mortar and pestle. Found I really like the cheaper malabar peppercorns.... a sharper more intense bite then the tellicherry. Really gave a nice boost to my cooking in general. I was buying pretty good black pepper but the fresh crushed peppercorns outshine even the best ground I can buy locally.

What I really need is to find a good source of coffee. Tempted to start roasting my own. With Renee gone I just sort of drink cup after boring cup of stuff that is similar to coffee.
