New Bosch DW -- a few questions about noises/sounds

I recently purchased a new Bosch DW.

It is the Bosch Ascenta SHE5AL06UC.

It was one of the deals through Trevor at Eurostoves.com.

$300 shipped. Awesome deal.

I installed it myself....no problem.

This is our first high-end dishwasher. The one we replaced was a bottom of the line Kenmore that was quite noisy.

We have run the new Bosch probably around 10 times or so.

What type of noises/sounds should I be hearing with this Bosch?

Typically, we can hear the water sloshing and splashing around inside the washer.

Also, the gurgling in the kitchen sink drain while draining is kinda loud, but tolerable.

But to be fair, overall it is much much much quieter than the Kenmore.

But I was just wondering what are normal operating noises for this unit....

What you describe seems about normal.
The Bosch Ascenta is the lower price point line of Bosch dishwashers and will not be as quiet as the higher end Bosch units. I have noticed that they share the same circulation pump and heater systems as the high end Bosch 800+ units. My service trainer for Bosch says the new pump and heater actually heats water slightly faster than the standard units.

I suggest that the sound of the water gurgling in the kitchen sink will occur with any dishwasher. This noise is not a dishwasher controllable noise, although is suppose if the drain pump in the dishwasher has a higher flow rate, the sound might be louder.

Closing the sink's drain cover/strainer will likely eliminate this noise.

I wouldn't start apologizing until you need to--some people will take that as a sign of weakness and try to walk all over you. How far is the kitchen from the bedroom? It may not be that much of a problem at all. I'd wait until you hear. And until you've actually lived in this place and have some idea of what noise will travel. If you can hear the neighbor's TV pretty easily through the floor, but a quiet walk to the hall outside their door tells you that it's not traveling through the door, then you know the floors are thin, and noise might travel. If you don't hear much, then you can not worry so much. I also find that, since I sleep in the bedroom and my bedroom is under my neighbor's bedroom, I don't hear what goes on in the living room. She can HAVE her TV going at night as long as it isn't really loud; I won't hear it. She can have a conversation in the dining room or living room, it doesn't come through the floor and travel over a room to the bedroom. Of course, since everything is quieter, noise seems louder at night--so you might find that a low stereo and a quiet conversation are safer. (maybe no stereo, but you won't know that till you're there) (my new downstairs neighbors live jazz-band practice does bleed into the living room from the bedroom 2 rooms away, though) (I *think* a solid food processor is less loud than a blender, though there's no way to not be loud if you're chopping ice) (and you could decide to drink whisy source instead of frozen drinks.

I had them install it. Im not looking for silent just quiet enough to be able to watch tv in another room or sleep in the bedrooms while its running, a conversation in the same room is impossible! I thought I had it with a Bosch, but not so. It makes me feel better to know just a few DB makes a huge dif, I didn't know that. Thank you so much for explaining that. My friends is the same evolution but the next model up at 3 DB lower in noise level. I wasn't sure it would make that big of a difference. Today I exchanged it for the next model up from hers. Im sure something has to be wrong with it, but Im not taking any chances. Thank you all so much for your help. Im just hoping for the bare minimum of noise since we run it so much, my house is huge and kitchen and bedrooms are at opposites sides of the house with the laundry in between, I can still hear every noise it makes. So frustrating, but I'll give you my take on the SHE98 that is coming in 19 days.

Wow - news to me! Ever since Thermador was bought by Bosch/Siemens, Thermador dishwashers have been near-clones of Bosch machines until now. Whirlpool at least uses different racks and various trivial differences like difference wash arms, but Thermador (and even Gaggenau) generally changed nothing but the control panel, and then only slightly. (Before the BSH buyout, Thermador dishwashers were clones of Waste King dishwashers, the sink disposer folks). Now they have a few unique features to separate them from Bosch. Time-remaining displays are commonplace, but Thermador's projects it onto the floor! Also, whereas Bosch dishwashers (at least in the US) don't have illuminated interiors, Thermador does - and in blue to match their other appliances. Not sure if blue lighting is as useful as white, but it does look cool: It also has the new rack designs for the top and bottom racks (and maybe the center - not obvious from their pictures). I really like being able to store glasses on the bottom rack and larger items on the top, which makes it easier to load and lift heavier items into and out of the dishwasher. But I see they still claim only 44db sound level on their priciest dishwashers, whereas Bosch claims 39db. Wonder what is different or missing in the Thermadors.

"Our local store rec'd the Electrolux Q50 series. Though reviewed.com loves this machine I'm having a difficult time finding owner feedback. I was told this was Italian time-tested technology, just now brought to the US. And the orbit clean has just come out of patent, but is also not "new". Any leads on further information?" The Frigidaire FPID/FGID and Electrolux EI24ID/EW24ID (including the 50QS) are brand new and seem to be a redesign from the ground up. Electrolux did not have a great reputation for dishwashers in the past; owners complained of poor washability and reliability. However, it's very possible this new line is great and exactly what they needed. You certainly won't find any user reviews at this point, though. If you buy one, let us know what you think! The only real "proven" dishwashers on the market right now are Maytag and the Euro manufacturers Bosch, Miele, and Asko. Although Maytag is a Whirlpool brand, they still use the previous generation Point Voyager tall tub wash system that works well. Whirlpool has transitioned the rest of their brands including KA to the "Global Wash System" which supposedly is quieter and uses less water but is unproven. GE and Electrolux/Frigidaire just introduced complete redesigns, presumably because their previous offerings weren't so great. Those are also unproven.

I'm reading between the lines that you think this unit is loud.

I think your expectations may have been too high. No DW is silent. Your unit is entry level and has a louder rating than most of the Bosch units people coo about round here.

The gurggle in the sink is as mrtime says: not dependent on the DW. It's a result of a less than ideal drain system from your plumber. We specify that DW's be hooked up to their own separate p-trap which will eliminate this noise and complaint.

For 300 bucks what were you really expecting, dishwasher nirvana? There are few units in the market place that cost near or even less than this and none are as good as the unit you now have.

i hear what you are saying....but honestly the machine is so much quieter than the old Kenmore, I couldnt be happier, especially for only $300.
I didnt mean to come across as disappointed with the sound level....i'm definitely not....but since this is my first "high-end" dishwasher, I just wanted to be sure the noises I was hearing were expected for this model.

as far as the gurgling in the drain, that's kinda what i figured.....no big deal. i can live with the gurgling.

My SHV-46-13UC hums a little when it runs, and gurgles in the disposer when it drains. The dishes com out almost too hot to handle, and the only wetness may be in the dished bottoms of cups and glasses.
It's been 100% satisfactory, such an upgrade from entry-level.
My model is the cheapest panel-ready fully integrated (since superseded by a different model).
