can we talk about...birthday cake?

sigh

This is so simple, and so stupid. My son has requested a "balloon cake" for his birthday. What is a balloon cake? Ever seen the ad for the Betty Crocker cake decorating kit? 100 pieces for just 19.95 (plus shipping and handling). In that ad, for a split second, they show about a third of a cake that has balloons piped onto it. It's a plain, old cake frosted in white with edible confetti scattered across it. This is what he wants.

Now the dilemma. I have made cheesecakes, carrot cakes, tres leches cakes topped with whipped cream, igloo shaped baked alaskas, even ice cream cakes but I have never made a simple, frosted birthday cake. Yes I could buy one but...seriously...it's a cake. I don't want to do a mix & canned frosting. And of course I know how to bake a cake but what do I fill it with? I have visions of lemon curd or dulce de leche but this is a 4 year old that we're talking about.

This was much easier when I was the only one deciding the menu!

Can anyone talk me through some nice birthday cakes?

Nina
