can we talk about...birthday cake?
Comments (31)Hi guys, I can't thank you all enough for your help! The cake came out beautifully, I'll see if I can get pics uploaded tonight. The starburst was a big hit and the starburst balloons were great, and easy. I used scissors to cut them into the shapes & then piped the strings on. Then scattered colored sprinkles over the whole top of the cake. William was delighted with his cake, the cake itself was delicious. Stacy- I made the strawberry filling from frozen berries and used your friend's cream cheese frosting recipe with twice as much cream cheese and butter but only the 1 lb of sugar (mainly because that's all that I had) and it was just the right amount of sweetness for the cake. The starburt balloons prompted lots of discussion on what other candy would work...things like fruit roll ups (or do they still make those square sheets of "fruit leather"?) or airheads (which are supposedly like starburts only already flat). So now, if I've got to make another balloon cake for the kid's party on Saturday I'm not afraid! This sort of cutting out shapes as decorations will work out well for me because while I have a steady hand for drawing, painting or glass cutting I seem to be having some sort of fit whenever I try to decorate with icing. Kathleen- I think that I'll try to get to the WS outlet this Sunday. I wonder if Woodbury will have them? And thank you all for the compliments on my little guy. I can't believe he's 4! Still every bit as cute, just a lot bigger. Nna...See MoreLets talk weddings!
Comments (40)When I worked weddings back in the 80s most weddings averaged around 150-200 guests. It was a moderately-priced venue - you could do fancy but most people stuck to the basics (stuffed chicken!). Family-style meals were also common (and probably the least expensive option I think). We didn't do buffets for weddings. There were weddings in the 200s but over 300 was extremely rare. Anything larger couldn't fit in our building so that's why we didn't see the really big ones. There could have been plenty of those big weddings at other venues for all I know but I doubt it...See MoreFarm weddings and birch tree cakes...
Comments (26)Annie, you are such a great person. You are always there when someone needs you and you do beautiful things with cakes. I just love this one. Yes, you could do cakes for a side business, but you do so much already. The young couple had their wish come true and will have such wonderful memories. When Darrell finally out and out proposed, a different story, I knew we had to have our wedding at my mom and dad's house. My dad had never seen any of his children get married. My first marriage took place in Tokyo, but the others were local. I decided if we couldn't get Mohammed to the mountain, we'd get the mountain to him. We were married in their living room in front of their white fireplace by candlelight. Mom and I used to do wedding cakes, so she made ours, the punch, etc. I made my sister's and my peasant style gowns from material I had had kept when I closed my fabric shop in Virginia. At the last minute I got my sister and I each a rose with baby's breathe. All under $100. It's lasted almost 43 years so I guess it was a good one. I hope this young couple is as fortunate. Oh, and when we made wedding cakes, one couple didn't tell us the wedding was actually taking place in her parents' back yard. Hot June day. We tried to tell her the four tier cake would melt, but she didn't care. Sometimes they aren't so picky....See MoreCan we talk about real estate property taxes?
Comments (46)Timely subject. Our neighborhood just received our property tax assessments for 2016, payable in 2017. Our property taxes have gone up 45%. Our home values have not. We had a refi appraisal within the last year & our home value was less than the current property taxes, prior to this increase. A 45% increase & our taxes are already high. Illinois is number 50, of 50 states, in public pension debt. In the recent past, the federal government has given Illinois stimulus money for education. The majority of that money has NOT gone to schools & students - it has paid for pension debt. We're going to need another bailout from the states that have been fiscally responsible. Edit: We will be appealing - we do every year. The first time we used an attorney, whose fee was 50% of of the tax savings. Then we started doing it ourselves. We have the choice to appeal based on "uniformity" or "overvaluation." "Uniformity" involves collecting & submitting comps of other comparable homes. "Overvaluation" is submitting a home appraisal with a date of Jan 1, 2016 so we get tax credit for the entire year. We've had better results with the home appraisal, overvaluation method. Everyone in our neighborhood's home value has jumped up by between $200,000 - $400,000, according to the taxing authority. I'd have no problem with it if our home value had truly increased, but it hasn't....See MoreFori
