Easy homemade hot dog or clam rolls

OK so you guys know my ZO is behaving badly. The bottom crust is hard enough to play hockey with. The mother-of-invention here could not throw the bread out and she already had enough bread in the freezer. I decided to cut the bread bottom crust off and slice the bread in 1¼ inch slices. I then cut each slice in half. Then I cut each 1/2 slice from the raw (inside) edge just about 3/4 of the way to the side crust. I put all of these "top cut" hot dog buns in zip bags. I took 2 of them out yesterday and toasted each side lightly in a fry pan and used them for hot-dogs with chili & onions -- they were OUTstanding!! I had a pack of frozen clam strips in the freezer and thought I would try the same thing only make it a clam roll. I used 2 more of the 'hot dog' rolls - toasted - stuffed them with deep fried clams - visions of Howard Johnsons danced thru my head.

I never thought about using thick slices of bread for top slice hot dog rolls. They would be good for lobster rolls too. The bread that I was using is just the basic white bread - bread machine recipe. Can't wait to get my ZO exchanged/repaired so I can try this again.
