Sharing two computers....

how do people do this? I have a computer at work and need to access it from home. I need to enter data from home to keep the work machine updated. I am running the same software on both machines. Both machines are XP.

I have no idea how this is done. Where would I look and what would it be called. My home and office are approx 20 miles apart.

The most popular (for business) is PC Anywhere.
Does your office have a tech guy ?
There possible firewall and security issues ...maybe.

Pardon me,I don't see how or why you have such a big problem with hard wire system ? I run 15 computers at my home and run 5 different OS . All I did was hook up a router to my DSL conection and then just ran Cat 5 cable to the computers.use cable nails to secure to wall,and done. You now have wired a home network. If you really want to do this, I would gladly talk you thru this. Contact me anytime. Good luck.

Switching to a new printer for a MAC

Mike, Thank you so much! In the book, The Missing Manual, it just said all I had to do was move the printer to the trash basket in the dock.It said there was no "uninstall" program for the MAC. But your instructions to hit the "-" did the trick! I am so grateful! But when I go to File in Numbers, there is no "page set up", and none under any of the other headings either. I just can't believe that something as elementary as switching between landscape and portrait is so obscure on a MAC. I have some simple spreadsheets that I am certain would print on one page in landscape. It was so easy to do on a PC! Again, thank you.

Cat....THANK YOU 700 times!!!! I tried what you said on the laptop, Vista, but when I got to the last thing....."uncheck" in the delivery section....it wasn't there. Then I went to the desktop, Win 7, and it worked! I had to go into it a different way but I found it. I sent an email and it came into the desktop and not the laptop. Thanks everyone else for your comments! I do have Yahoo email that I only use for special things. I also have gmail but that too is used for something. I have had this email address for over 15 years so I would have to send notices to a lot of people so I have stayed with it for years.

I just downloaded the FireFox Browser. I figured so many people have been telling me how easy it is to use and if so many are happy I can be too! Lately IE has really been dogging my work by not connecting to web pages or just freezing up completely and my poor system has to find a solution or restart the page which disconnects me. blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda Oh How I HOPE I can learn how to use it with very few dummy questions. Is there a firefox for dummies booklet out? LOL I'm off to the getting started page to learn. Please wish me luck. CT.

My office consists of ME. I'm it! No tech guy, just this gal who is not 'tech' at all. Work for a doctor and make appts and billing. Just the two of us.

My concern is patient's records. So it has to be secure.

I will check out those links.

Xp actually comes with 'Remote Desktop Connection'

'Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.

My xp is broke right now or I'd tell you where you have to go to enable or allow it. You might need to install it from the CD, or download it if its not already installed on your computers. Its not by default installed nor set as allowed.

Once you test it to see if you can live with the slow part, then you might want to read up on security and enabling tunneling to make it extra secure. Its free by microsoft. You'll need xp pro on the office end.

If you don't have xp pro, really consider the logmein program I am sure it is secure, + free, + simple - on this link there is a little video you can see..

I think you download the program on each computer & go...

Sorry, Mikie, he's a 'head-shrinker.' Diagnosis: Hypochondria! Prognosis: Poor

I do have Pro on all machines and I looked at remote desktop, but it is slow. The problem has been with scheduling. I make appt's on my machine and he makes some in his book or on his machine. They don't share info so we wind up booking the same time slots for different people. Embarrassing! I print up my schedule at the end of the day for him to check, but he never does.

I need to be able to book a patient and have it appear on his machine. If it takes too long, it could be a problem.

It is just the two of us and I don't go in until noon. He's there alone in the morning. He books people and its not on my machine. Crazy. I can't come up with a solution!

I will look at those links. But I fear it requires more savvy than I have.

Sounds like you both need to share something like an online calendar. It would update the moment you put something in it.
