Switching to a new printer for a MAC

WE bought a new wireless printer that will be shared by two computers. One computer, a PC, is all set, no problem. On the MAC laptop, the MAC will not stop trying to print to the old printer.

I have thrown the old printer into the trash, and changed the default setting to the new printer. The new printer is installed.

But when I click print, the computer still tries to print to the old printer, I have to change the order to print to the new printer.

Also is there any way to cancel printing on the MAC once printing has started?

And how do you change from portrait to landscape on the MAC?

Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

What application are you trying to print from? Have you deleted the old printer? System Preferences, Print & Fax, highlight the old printer and then hit the "-" sign in the lower left below the list of printers. OS X does have a print setting in the Print & Fax dialog box under default printer called "Last Printer Used". Is, that, perhaps still set for the old printer? There's also a little lock at the bottom of the dialog box, is that "unlocked"? Otherwise your changes won't take effect.

As for landscape, in the application choose File then "page setup".

Thank you so much! In the book, The Missing Manual, it just said all I had to do was move the printer to the trash basket in the dock.It said there was no "uninstall" program for the MAC. But your instructions to hit the "-" did the trick! I am so grateful!

But when I go to File in Numbers, there is no "page set up", and none under any of the other headings either. I just can't believe that something as elementary as switching between landscape and portrait is so obscure on a MAC.

I have some simple spreadsheets that I am certain would print on one page in landscape. It was so easy to do on a PC!

sharon- I looked at the specs for that machine, and it looks like it should be entirely adequate. [Apple MacBook MB881LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, Slot Loading SuperDrive)?] How long does it take to boot-up? I, too, think there might be some problem with the interface to your Internet connection, or with how the machine is set up. I'm not sure that another Mac with a 2.4 processor will solve the problem (unless your current machine is a lemon). Before you give up, I think you need to talk with Apple tech support and see if they can diagnose what's going on with it. I don't think the problem is with the machine's specs.

Here is a link about OpenOffice. I don't have good enough excel experience to be an advocate for the OO program. I love the concept of this project; professionals and users creating software for free (you can contribute toward costs), improving it as needed, and distributing for free to everyone - just for the public good, no profits involved. I hadn't heard of it until this last fall, but it's been around for over a decade. New computer - can it be switched to XP (from vista)?

I was going to state that you can make it appear almost like XP, so it is much easier. My sister that is VERY computer illiterate went from ME to Vista!! After about an hour on the phone, we got it set up to just about the way it looked before. I didn't have her take off the authorization pop ups tho...I wanted her to make sure she knew what she was doing! If she can get through that, I believe ANYONE can!! My first Vista was at the office and that was a year ago last month. I go between my office puter, and laptop both on Vista to my main desktop that is XP. I honestly don't understand what all the griping is about! There isn't really that much different! Except for that pop up...and you can take that off. The biggest difference on it is My Pictures...there are some wonderful bonus' in that tho! I guess I have been very lucky too, as I have had no problems with any drivers! And at the office I have ALL ages of printers/scanners.

It's the same reason why Microsoft cuts off updates/support for old Windows versions after a set number of years, why Apple does the same for old OS versions (and even cuts them off from the iTunes store so that apps can't be updated or new ones added ), etc. Products aren't supported forever, rather only for a fixed period of time. New hardware and software versions aren't necessarily backwards compatible (ie, some can't or don't always work with old components) and so that new drivers might be disproportionately difficult to do. I remember some years ago, the industry standard protocol for scanners changed and i had to buy a new one when I got a new PC. There have been a number of protocols and standards that have been dropped over the years and replaced, thus orphaning the hardware that uses the standard that's gone out of favor. The end of driver support for new OS's is similar.

Maybe numbers is always in landscape by default?

I checked pages and there is a page "set up" option under File there.

Again, thank you! It works!

I did go to the Apple Support yesterday to try to get help for the printer problem but it said to go to Utilities and find Printer Utility (or something like that, I copied the instructions from the site but threw them out when they weren't helpful) but my computer didn't have a Printer Utility under Utilities.

I wonder why switiching from landscape to portrait is so complicated on the MAC and why they do it a different way according to what program you are using, ie pages vs numbers.

I find the MAC very frustrating. :(

I used Windows almost exclusively for the twenty years but started using a Mac for the last year or so. I don't find OS X so much "better" or "worse" but rather just different. There are some similarities with commands but a lot of stuff is just in a different place, something you get used to.

It does seem odd that Numbers (which I haven't used) has it's page orientation in a different place than other applications. There's probably an explanation but I don't know what it is.
