My new pc has Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and I just received my free upgrade for windows7. My desktop is a custom build and has very little software installed... Would it be all right to do an upgrade, or should I try to do the clean install? I'm a little nervous about doing the clean install, so I thought I would ask for your thoughts...

Assuming you received the CDs for the motherboard and any other separate boards installed you would perhaps be wise to do a clean install. Take a look at the link below. Besides the clean install tutorial they have a huge selection of tutorials specific to Windows 7 - and some very classy wallpapers.

Doing an upgrade keeps all you files in tact and programs. Doing a clean install wipes the hard drive. If I had a choice I would always prefer a clean install upgrades have been an issue in the past with other operating Systems. Microsoft claims there are no issues with Windows 7 upgrades. I am using Firefox. So far today things seem to be running ok. The pictures were not a camera photos but images of something found on a website by my friend. Usually she or I will find a cute idea to craft and will send a picture of it. No problem in the years or days past everything always opens. Even when my friend had sent me a link to a site all I got was that blank page. Maybe firefox caught up with the new Adobe reader. Iris I don't get anything like this in my e-mails. The images just always open. On my list is to buy a pictorial Windows 7 book. I could really use it. I thought I may do ok with this new widows but there are some things that is different or sofware like my music software that will not work as it was outdated and no longer being made. Still have to work this issue out.

Support has been, or will be dropped for all versions of XP except for service pack 3. However, XP remains my favorite windows version. My wife moved to Vista on her laptop and hated it. She now has Windows 7 and says it is an improvement over Vista. Some day, I plan to move to Windows 7 and skip Vista. This requires a complete clean out of the system - reformat of the disk. I dread that move, and expect some applications and hardware will no longer be compatible. If certain applications become incompatible, I'll resist the move as long as I can. These would be applications that are too expensive for me as a retiree to replace. I have an old finite element analysis program that is no longer compatible. To buy a new version is $16,000 the last time I priced it, so that will not be done unless I land a consulting job that needs it and can pay for it - not likely in my remaining life. If you are having difficulty in finding your pictures, use the "Find" command to search your hard drive. If your disk has been subdivided into logical drives, you may have to search each logical drive. The find comamnd does not need the entire name of the file to find it, just part of the name will do. It will, of course, list all files matching the same fragment. For example, if you searched for all occurences of *.jpg, you'll get every file having extension " jpg", not necessarily an efficent thing to do. Suppose you have the followiong files: 1998 Joey 1.tif 1998 Joey 2.jpg 2000 Joey 1.doc You could locate all these files by searching on "joey" and very likely would not get many extraenous hits. File names that contined the string, joey, would also appear such as jumpjoey.tif . Recommendation: In the future, create folders with meaningful names in which to store your images. That way, you'll know where they are. Folder names such as: Vacation Jun 2000 Year 2001 pic Year 2002 pic 110Canon 111Canon are examples. Tip: Its a good idea when you set up a new computer to set aside a data drive for documnets and images. If you have one hard drive, a logical drive could be created on it. You would have 2 logical drives: one for the system files and the other for your personal files. I have 2 physical hard drives in my computer which becomes a natural thing to do. This separates your data from the system and application disk, and makes for more efficient use fo the "Find" command. On first pass, you need to search only the data drive, and if not found there, search the other drives. System and application files are humungous these days and requires much needless search time.

loralee- Problems like you were having typically result from installing programs that you find on the Internet...stuff like that coupon printer, which often typically come with all kinds of pop ups and malware.. Unless you are downloading known programs like Adobe, Firefox, Flashplayer, etc., from reliable sources, you're asking for trouble. And when you try to uninstall these programs they either don't uninstall easily or they uninstall and leave behind things that continue to mess up your computer. There are even programs that you pay for that seem to be legitimate antivirus programs that actually take control of your computer and can make a huge mess of things, and require expert help to get rid of. After you get your computer fixed, please do not download and install any new programs you happen to find online - free or otherwise -or anything that's supposed to fix your computer or find malware because these things often are malware themselves. And if there's something you find that seems legitimate and you really think you have to have it, check here first to make sure that it's not going to mess up your computer again.

I like the clean install as long as you have all the support disks. In my mind it is always better to start with a stable foundation lacking potential flotsam of unused code, obsolete folders and missed files.

If you have minimal or no disks Belarc will give you a report as to what the internals of your system are and you could then amass the necessary backup drivers and such.

I have vista 64 bit, I did the compatibility test and there are to many problems which I don't know how to fix. My printer, scanner, my video card. The list goes on and on. I don't have any problem with Vista, so will leave it as is.

I had not thought about the need to install all of the drivers!!! The disks given me are: msi Drivers & Utilities; MSI Extras Disk 1; CD DRIVER version 10.4 (could this be for an LG DVD burner?); Samsung DVD Writer; Vista Home Premium 64-bit; one for my Epson printer. That's it!

Would I need a driver for my video card? NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT?

Would you advise me to call the company that built my system? Maybe they would work with me in doing the install! :)

It wouldn't hurt to check. Most vista drivers will work in win 7. I found out the hard way that xp drivers don't. I thought that because I dual booted between xp and win 7 and everything worked that it would be the same when I installed win 7 over xp but it didn't work out that way. I eventually got everything working except the onboard sound. I had to buy a sound card but even to my tin ear it sounds better.

Abreeze you obviously have an MSI motherboard and the CD will cover all the onboard drivers needed like LAN, sound, IDE and/or SATA. You would use this after installing Win 7. Win 7 will likely have the drivers for your video card then afterwards you can visit the video card maker's site and grab the latest drivers if you wish. This is a separate video card on not onboard? The Win 7 install will no doubt include your LG DVD burner drivers too, you will not necessarily need to install any burning software because that is included with the new operating system.

If you use Skype be sure to grab the very latest version otherwise you may get compatibility issues. 4.1.0.179

Bob414 are you saying you created a dual boot system and placed both operating systems on the same partition? Normally one would create a second partition on the hard drive or have a second hard drive. By default when I dual booted XP and Win7 the Win 7 install took control and offered itself, I needed to select XP if I wanted that operating system to boot.

With all other software you need to install from both operating systems but have them both point to the same file location on either the C: or D: drive so you access the same stuff from either partition.

I have two hard drives in computer and had xp on one and win 7 release candidate on the other. Everything worked fine. I formatted the drive with win 7 on it and installed win 7 home premium on the drive that xp was on. Then I started having driver problems but nothing very bad except the on board sound.
