why does pat austin (almost) always look so sad??
Comments (20)I miss my Pat Austin. I planted it in a semi-shady spot in my house in Columbus and it did incredible there. Despite having less sun than other roses, the rose went bonkers and was in near continuous bloom. The foilage was always spotless and I made numerous comments that it was the healthiest looking rose I have ever had with it's glossy green foilage and bright blooms. If I had any complaint about Pat Austin, it would be that the blooms tend to fry, the scent is kind of like pure tea, and Pat Austin grew a little TOO WELL since I didn't prune it back hard enough and it pumped out too many blooms to support itself. It's definitely one rose I really miss. I brought back cuttings to NW Ohio, but they died for completely unknown reasons. I'm contemplating pulling a covert operation this weekend to go to my old rental property and confiscate some clippings of my old Pat Austin which still grows on that property with zero maintenance like a champ. Here she was with too many blooms to support herself after being in the ground for a year on the north side of the house. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.163027...See MoreWhy does my bloom look so different?
Comments (2)Ischan, I found the pic that looks like yours ....almost. It should be a semi-mini Single chimera red-purple pansy, blue fantasy. Medium green, quilted, serrated. I do not see the blue fantasy and your leaves are light green. If it is the very first bloom - wait - sometimes they come to look closer to the description after the second - third bloom. It is definitely a beautiful chimera - and chimeras are rare. Check where you bought it - it can be another chimera - misnamed - or your chimera sported - changed a bit. But it is very lovely and rare. Enjoy it. Good Luck Irina Here is a link that might be useful: another monkeyshines...See Morewhy does my house cool off so fast?
Comments (14)"Reply to solargary...I took a look at my 'cracked' windows in relation to the return air vents and had an A-Ha moment. I also threw another blanket over the house fan in the attic. Is there some kind of special blanket or material that can be thrown over attic protruberances to deal with heat loss? I thought about sacrificing my best down comforter to the job but decided it might be better used on my bed." I have a whole house fan also, and built up a box around its perimeter made from 2 inch thick rigid foam board. In the winter I put a lid on this box also made from 2 inch foam board, and put a couple of rocks on it to make sure it seals down to the foamboard edges (high tech eh). I then throw some batt insulation over that. The foam board box seals up the whole fan in the box, and also keeps loose fill insulation out of the fan area. Another notorious leak area is the hatch to the attic. I've seen studies that concluded that a large part of the total attic heat loss can come from a leaky hatch. For other penetrations (like wiring, plumbing, can lights), I raked away the existing loose fill insulation, then used the polyurethane foam in a can (eg Great Stuff) to seal all the gaps. Its a bit messy, but easy. You have to be a bit careful insulating around can lights if they are not approved for direct insulation contact. For the problem of increased depth of loose fill blocking the soffit vents, they make thin foam board "chutes" that you staple up the roof sheathing before putting in more loose fill. The chutes keep an air channel open. Home Depot type places sell them. Bushleague -- I'm also a big fan of the Onset loggers -- I'm up to 3 of the 4 channel ones (don't tell my wife :). Comments (1)Primer always looks splotchy - because it's primer and not paint. The purpose of primer is to prepare the surface for the new color. It's not about hiding or covering up the old color. Unless there was an issue with the substrate (wall), you probably didn't even need to use primer at all. Some darker colors require a tinted primer undercoat to help build hide. Light and medium value colors don't....See Morestinkytiger
