SP2 won't download and install-Confused (as usual)

Have a Dell with XP Home, and AVG free....nothing else at the time that I am aware of.

A while back I reformatted. I just noticed that when I went to get Windows updates, that SP2 had not installed earlier.

I followed the links per the instructions for installation problems and did as I was told.

Resolutions

1. Set Background Intelligent Transfer Service to Automatic and verify the Status is Started.

Click Start.

Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service, and right-click to select it.

Select Properties.

In the Startup Type list, select Automatic.

Verify the service Status is Started.

Click OK.

Well, it was already set to "Automatic"

Question...SP 2 is an antivirus...right?

Is it a stand alone antivirus...meaning if I have it, I should not have the AVG free? they will conflict?

Or, do I maybe need to turn off AVG free while trying to install the Windows updates (SP2) and then turn it back on when the download and install is done.

I might mention, I do not care for updates download automatically. Don't they slow my computer when they are being downloaded?...or even checked for? I want to 'know' if my computer is slow for whatever reason and not just chalk it up to "Oh it must be checking for updates/and/or downloading and installing them.

Can you see I am lost.

Please dumb your answers down for me. It will help me and not hurt my feeling whatsoever. I'm still not very computer smart, compared to most folks.

SP2 for XP is not an anti-virus, its a big upgrade for XP.

Do you run a firewall other than default one that came with xp ? If so turn it off before downloading sp2.

You should close all windows and stop any programs you easily can before installing sp2,,, and do read and follow the install requirements..

been a while since I installed it but think maybe you need to turn off your AVG too & the best way to do that is to look in its options and set it so it doesnt start at boot- then reboot. That way its totally unloaded. Just stopping it doesnt unload all the modules.

Just had to take a look. I am happy to see MS is offering a "stand alone" download which will allow those of us with more than one computer to download only once. Makes me wonder how MS validates, maybe for this they have forgone the usual validate process.

I would try one of 3 options there perhaps. Someone else may come up with a simpler fix if you care to wait a while, you are in no danger. Reboot and try again. Or open Windows Explorer, find and delete the log file mentioned and try the install again. Failing that I would download the whole Zonealarm program (being sure to stay on the free version). Then remove your internet connection, use the Add/Remove to get rid the current Zonealarm and install the downloaded program. Here is a link that might be useful: Free Zonealarm download site

lynn in those cases it would have been installed with sp3 on the disc I would guess. I think it would probably be best to just live with it as it is in that case. When it comes pre installed usually all the bugs have been worked out and it is functioning well on that pc or they would not be putting it out there with it on it. There will be some smart people that will come out with some little script changes that will put the things like the address bar back. In fact I had found one but then his site went down and I lost it. In a perfect world I would say yes it should have sp1, sp2 and sp3 all on it but not knowing how they have their install disc configured to load up that many computers no way to say for sure.

I have the Kodak Easy Share, and it works the same way on both my XP and Vista computers. I did not install any driver for the camera. I did install the Kodak program. Once the program is installed, leave the camera off, hook up your usb cable to both the computer and the camera. Now open easy share software. Turn on the camera. You should get up a box, that says, windows has detected new hardware, and it will install a driver for the camera. Once done, Kodak, will come up with a box, to transfer all the pictures. I dont store my pictures in Kodak (it does keep a copy though, that I delete later). I have gone into preferences, and have all photos,directed to go to a folder on my desktop. Your camera, most likely is different than mine, since mine is a couple years old, but my grandaughters is much newer than mine, and she has no problems, putting her pictures on my computer using this method, and my daughter recently got a new Kodak, and she had no problem putting them on my computer either. There was a time that Firefox (and its Netscape predecessor) offered a better experience than Internet Explorer. I think that time has passed. I've had too many quirky incidents and problems with Firefox lately, so I've stopped using it. My experience is that IE has improved a bunch while FF has sunk, and Chrome is also solid (though it seems to be not as compatible with some web features as IE is). Life is too short to drink bad wine. It's also too short to struggle with one free browser, when there are a half dozen also free alternatives that are perfectly satisfactory.

That stand alone download is lots more bytes to cover most every version of xp and then some.

Don't worry you'll know if you dont have a legal copy.

I noticed when I downloaded and installed SP3 for Win XP that there was no validation process.

Yes wait for final and official release only advanced users like mikie shoud be fooling with it..

Advanced users or people like me who just like to play around with their computer and don't mind formatting and starting over if they have to. I used to do it once a year with windows 98. I'm not advising anyone to try it, just commenting on the fact that it didn't require a validation process.

Seems to me there should have been a validation process, makes me wonder perhaps that release did not require it, or where you downloaded from made a difference? I have no idea, Microsoft usually validates software, unless it recognizes you have a ligit copy of xp and skips the validation deal..

XP/IE7 doesnt need validation. Unless it was just temporary, they've stopped the validations.

I read something about if you're not Genuine you will loose some things,, thing that caught my eye was your desktop loses scheme background & turns black... which is my default anyways.

That would not surprise me. however I think they need a foolproof program before doing that nonsense. Even one tenth of one percent with genuine Windows being denied is way too many.

These days they even deny those with burned out motherboards the right to re-install Windows without a fight. Too many users would not know that and buy a second copy of Windows.
