Dishwasher backordered.now what?

After finally deciding on the kuds30ix Kitchenaid and placing order with Lowes 13 days ago,I called and they checked into it and found out Whirlpool is backordered on that one for at least 5 weeks and it could be till Jan. I'm so frustrated because it took forever for the salesman to place order,then he ordered wrong one (which we realized before getting home) then order this one and now can't get it. I wouldn't mind the wait so much if I wasn't going to be out $613 and not even have a dishwasher here for many weeks. I guess I'm going to go cancel the order till later. The only thing is I got it on sale and if I wait to order later it might not be on sale... I don't think there's another dishwasher that has everything that this one had for near the same price. I'm not willing/able to spend $1000+ for one.

Bought from Lowes because of bad experience with Oasis washer/dryer from Sears and they have cheaper warranties.

I'd just wait for it. You got a good price and the model you wanted. After it's installed, you'll forget how long it took to get.

In my experience with the Lowes here, their salespeople varied widely in their ability to figure out the company's computer system, esp. re: how many units were available in their regional warehouse. Depending on the day and who was looking, I got wildly different estimates for the number of fridges on hand.

Call me a cynic, but -- since its Lowes -- it might be worth calling a different store (or salesperson) just to verify this backorder story. If you can locate the dishwasher you want elsewhere, maybe it could be shipped over for delivery more quickly than they're saying.

The 18" Miele is well designed and reviewed and should be fine for two people. Even if it is run more often, they say nowadays that dishwashers use a lot less water than hand washing, so that wouldn't be so bad. Thinking toward the future, however, one of the few appliances that really comes in a pretty standard size is the dishwasher. There are variations of less than an inch, but they're all pretty much 24". If you get the 18" unit, you're betting that in the future, because even Mieles wear out, there will be a nice replacement. Also, that if you should ever want to sell your home, the buyers won't be put off by it. Happy medium: Before you get too far along, why not talk to a carpenter or cabinet installer and see if the cabinetry can be customized so that the sink can be supported properly in a smaller cabinet, with the drainboard extending over the DW, and that the DW can be installed under it. There are many dishwashers that anchor at the sides rather than the top, so if the drainboard is pretty flat, and won't be affected by the heat of the machine, it might be possible. I know what it's like to be in love with a sink, but between one and the other, I'd chose a standard sized sink and dishwasher, rather than an oversized sink and undersized dishwasher.

If you're concerned that you may not use it enough to run it that often, then get one that has a half load function. Many allow you to just do the top rack. However, the new Energy Star DW's only use around 3 1/2 gallons for a whole load nowadays. Even if you do run one for a less than full load, which uses around 2 1/2 gallons, you're still saving water over handwashing that same load. Seriously. The next time you handwash your dishes, you should try to do it on less than 3 1/2 gallons of water---and that includes rinsing! You won't be able to do it. You still need a certain amount of water to be able to submerge your dishes in, whereas the DW uses a much smaller amount and directed force to be able to loosen soil. A DW is considered a necessity in today's kitchen. Not having one subtracts value from the home, and indeed may knock an otherwise nice home out of the running when it comes resale time. At the very least, if you can't break your hand washing routine, you can always use the DW as your drying rack and get that off of your counter. But, once you really experience the quality of wash without you steaming up your glasses for a half an hour, you'll never go back!

very helpful info here. I was excited to see the Whirlpool best buy, but that is a pretty loud one, over 50 decibels, and has a plastic interior. There are a few Whilrpools that have stainless and are 47 decibels which look quite promising to me. Hoping this links to 3 which look REALLY good. Interesting because they are so similar in features, yet the weight on the first one is much less (not sure if it makes any difference but it's noteworthy).

zp99, I think as some others have said, I'd install a single drawer instead of the double as a second DW. You'd gain some cabinet/drawer space, and unless you really have a need to run 2 full-size DW's every week, I think it just makes more sense. We are installing a FP double integrated as our primary and only DW. I asked some questions about it in a POST a bit over a year ago, and at the end of the post is my review on what I felt I could fit inside. This was at the appliance store so of course I couldn't run it. Overwhelmingly, it seems those that have had them, love them. Having them installed properly seems to be paramount.

Thanks for replies. According to the saleman who passed this info to me what happened was this is a model that is just starting production so no one woud have it yet. Whirlpool started taking orders then production got delayed so they are very behind. I will try calling them on Monday to verify this information. I went to Lowes to see what they could do. They offered to upgrade but I like this model and I figured since the last years models are pretty much sold out and they are behind on this years that if I wanted Kitchenaid I would just have to wait. They couldn't refund me and still keep my special order but the manager has promised me a nice credit on my credit card once it does come in. So as long as he does that it will be worth the wait.
