End of Support for IE on Windows XP

The support and hot fixes for Internet Explorer on Windows XP ends on April 8, 2014. The obvious question is - what happens next?

Does downloading another browser fix the problem? I don't know what to do. Microsoft says computers will be vulnerable to viruses that the patches protect against.

Microsoft suggests a newer computer. I've updated IE as much as my machine allows. It is 5 or 6 years old; but, I still have at least 50% of the hard drive available, if not more. I don't feel I have any need for a new computer.

I'm nearly 70 and only use the computer as a social outlet. Don't do any banking or things like that. I shop a bit online and go to a few forums and craft groups. Nothing critical. I'm the only person who uses this machine.

I do have virus protection and keep it updated. Any suggestions as to what to do before the April deadline?

Just keep right on using the computer is my suggestion. You need to have something besides your anti virus program unless it is a 'cure all' type program covering virii and malware. Something like the free Malwarebytes will do you proud. Be very sure to watch as you install to stay with the free version - unless you would like the pro version of course.

After April just pay a little more attention to running a virus scan and a malware scan periodically and you'll do fine.

The browser you use has nothing to do with XP. Your XP is the operating system.

Google Chrome is the most popular browser outside of the U.S. and is widely considered faster and more refined than IE (though IE has improved considerably in recent years). You might try it out:

a great example is to go back in time and remember the blaster worm. It would be an exploit that utilizes something in the OS which has not been patched and the exploit has been exposed and is in the wild. In an OS that is no longer supported there will be no work done to provide a patch to stop such exploits. In the example of blaster a patch was put out that would block that hole. In an unsupported os you would not get that. Now the thing to remember is that in general the bad guys tend to go for the newer systems and tend to move away from those older ones because less people and business will be using them. That is not necessarily something to bank on however. An unsupported OS that has all the layered protection that can be applied is going to be fairly safe till some type of security exploit is found and no patch is put out for that exploit, when will that happen, no one knows, which is why it is advised to move on to ones that are supported. For an individual you are risking your own info so choosing to stick with it for a while is one thing, for a business that has the info of clients, customers, patients etc involved you had better think hard about that and the possible repercussions. Time to do an evaluation and make the decisions. Depending on the actual exploit the results could be from one extreme to minor, all depends on what and where the exploit is and what it takes to take advantage of said exploit. Just remembering the havoc of the blaster epidemic should provide a good shove in the right direction. Imagine all those machines that were rendered pretty much useless with out that fix installed. It is possible that others in the security industry may step in and create patches or fixes in some cases for unsupported OS's but again not something to bank on.

Ok this is simple now. Just use Google and type edit registry and millions of hits appear. Look through the first few and you will find many tutorials with good graphics showing step by step. You are nervous and rightly so because of all the warnings about messing up a registry. HOWEVER, this is nothing more than making a correction to a spelling error if you look at it that way. First time just go into the registry working down to the needed page. Once there you can walk away and grab a coffee if you feel stress, or you can make the simple correction to the one entry in question. Those of us who help others always need to stress the importance of caution in the registry because of those who are so impetuous. my ex son in law is a good example, he goes into a computer like a bull in a china shop. Luckily I do not have to clean up behind him anymore :) Now I have learned how to put stuff into a flash drive and save my files. Why? You are going to back up the registry as a precaution, nothing more. To save your work, assuming it is stored in My Documents. Insert the thumb drive, cancel the popup right click Start click Explore Now you see Windows Explorer opened Look near the top on the left side and right click on My Documnts click Properties in the pop up Look to see how large the My Documents folder is and if you have enough room on the thumb drive. We'll assume you have room. OK.... Click My Documents to highlight On the right side click the top item to highlight Hold down the Shift key and tap the End key now all the right side is highlighted right click anywhere on the highlighted data click Copy in the pop up Scroll down the left side now to find the thumb drive right click on it in the pop up click Paste and the contents are copied to your thumb drive - or any other drive you designate. Done! Simple huh?

I'm only 3 weeks into using Vista so I hate to give too many secrets out until I'm more sure of myself and what security I'm screwing up. But you can make a shortcut, right click and select properties & then follow the security tab to the differenct permissions. Take ownership and change away on the permissions. Eventually after two or three ways I can fairly much stop that you dont have permission to do this popup.... some programs you have to do it to the program folder also so the program can access and write within its own folder. My Toshiba laptop came with Vista and Quickbooks... maybe a trial, I havent tried it... it actually links to a web-addy. Here is a link that might be useful: (quickbooks - toshiba style)

Thanks, I try to be "just a user" then the machines (XP, W7, W8) grind to a grinding stop... now the XP. Working with guidance from zip516 the W8 machine is opeating near new - albeit I have "flash" off unless I specifically want it loaded to view a video. The XP machine now has to be turned on (yes I turn if off at night less exposure to the Internet during the others the otherside of the word is mostly awake and doing their dirty work - can a computer be breached buy just being "on", on the Internet but otherwise in a "sleep" statte?) . So I turn the XP machine on when I get up and my wife doesn't try to use Thunderbird or Firefox until the computer is on for at least 15 minutes Then there's the "script problem" on all machines, get a earning Script can not load.or similar, I usually just click skip. I'm not sure what that is used for but the computer seems to work following the "skip". AS I think you have already suggested, snidley, GET A MAC. That may be some help, after my wife gets over learning whatever is new and needed to know that is different than PC. I know when I run malwarebytes and somethime "house call" and a couple adware removers, the computer runs better. Maybe a commercial security package would help, we've used nothing but the free stuff (Avira now) for years... yes and MS Firewall. I may yet try a reload of XP, but I need to find out first if MS will still provide the update package to get a reload (from a 10 year old version of XP) up to the last security patches. The days of having an "IT Person" come by my office to tune-up my pc are long gone, I've been retired for several years.

I agree with owbist. Be sure to have a highly rated antivirus/anti malware system on duty.

If in later years you find erratic behavior with Internet Explorer, try something like Firefox or Opera.

You should be fine.

Keep on using your IE, but why wait for trying out other browsers? Move forward now at your own learning pace rather than when you are in desperate need You might even find something you like and want to use right away.

I agree with DA on the trying something new before you HAVE to, I HAD to move to win7, and was surprised at the small changes from XP, and threw me for a loop sometimes. Some things are minor, and didn't upset me, but others did make me nervous, and I am a nervous nellie when it comes to computer trouble, I like you use it for keeping touch with the outside world, and can't imagine being without it. Life is too short tho to fret about those things, take charge now, and take it slowly.

Thank you for the suggestions. I don't do change readily or very well, at all. Just ask the husband I've been hanging on to for 49 years. As soon as I adjust to him....well, who knows what could happen. :)
