IE8 Question

thirdfrt's computer is in the repair shop because she can not get onto the Internet so she asked if I would post this for her. Her service provider was at the house where everything checked out fine on their end and told her it was her computer at fault. It worked when plugged into their laptop to check out.

This is what she wants to know as what was told to her at the shop. They are going to put IE7 back.

Can IE8 prevent windows XP SP3 from getting online?

Thanks,

thirdfrt

Sure...if it's broken-corrupted-infected...anything is possible. This user needs to have a 2nd browser installed (even if she doesn't want to use it) so she'll be able to get online even if IE fails. However, I'll be surprised if going back to IE7 is a permanent fix for the problem. I think something else is going on.

The shop should be able to make it work with ie8.
    Thats their job.

Like az suggests.. perhaps ask if the shop can install chrome or/and firefox and get those online... then hopefully we can figure out whats up with ie8 later.

I am telling people to wait a while they have had some early reports of security holes right off. And some domains are not yet working with IE8. I am sure this will be quickly worked out but waiting a little while might save some issues. Internet Explorer 8: What You Need to Know this is from an article at the Register "Finally, there's a question over just how simple the move to IE 8 really is. Barzudukas claimed that overall domains such as the BBC and its own Microsoft.com do work with IE 8, it's just individual pages that are failing to work properly. A page that doesn't render or print properly, though, translates as a site that's broken when it comes to the demanding world of the web and people won't have time for it. It would be hard to imagine Microsoft being so tolerant if it came to judging a rival's browser performance." I always let the "testers" go grab that stuff early and watch and see what happens LOL

IE 8 Has been problematic on some xp machines from the start that's for sure. The shop apparently is aware of it, so it makes a lot of sense to go back to IE7, and remove IE 8, doing so removes the possibility that this is one of the XP machines that IE8 has issues with.

Even going back to IE7, she needs to have another browser along with IE. Firefox, Chrome, and Opera are all good solid browsers. I have all of them on my computers.

    Hi azinoh,mikie,Zep516,grandms and Urlee,

Well I finally have my computer back. You are right it wouldn't hurt if I had another browser. I will have to look into that.

Now about this computer. When I couldn't get online the error message was coming from IE so I called the ISP and they came out and he hooked up his laptop to check out the modem and when he did he got online, so then he was messing around on this computer and the next thing I knew Norton was trying to access the internet and of course it couldn't, because it couldn't get online. Norton popped up and said something was corrupted and I told this to the tech and they told us to bring the computer in.

When they got into my computer they found that there were things that had been disabled that shouldn't have been, so they enabled them. He told me that he might have been able to walk me through the IE problem, but after I told him some of the stuff this ISP guy did they thought it best I bring it in. I have no idea what was disabled I know I did one thing to keep from seeing these ads but I don't think that was the problem. Now I don't remember what I did to get rid of these ads here on the forum. It was done in IE I think.

Zep you are right, I think this is one of those machines because after I downloaded IE8 I started noticing that my computer was slowing down and I never put two and two together until my tech mentioned it to me. I just spoke to my tech and he told me that they also found stuff running in the backround and he gave me the example like if you download something and they have a check mark for you let's say Google Earth and they want you to have their tool bar, well I take those checkmarks off because I don't want that stuff. So is it possible that things can download anyway without my knowledge?

Where can I go to find out what is running in the backround and how do I know if it is suppose to be there or not?

He said I could put firefox in if I wanted to but he didn't reccommend anything else. Some people like Firefox and others don't, I guess it is just a matter of preference.

So for now my computer is faster and working well again. Thank you for your information it is much appreciated.

Thank you Urlee for posting this for me, I really appreciate you stepping in to help me.

you definitely need at least one other browser because IE does fail and when it does that leaves you no way to get online, so having at least one more browser like firefox is recommended. It is very easy to add it, you do not have to use it if you are happy with IE but having it on there should you need it is a good idea.

    Hi Raven,

Where do I go to download it?

Ok if I have firefox downloaded then how do I switch from IE to Firefox? Also can I still use OE?

    thirdfrt!!!

Just click on the Firefox icon to use Firefox and click on the IE icon to use IE. Outlook Express is not affected at all.

"Ok if I have firefox downloaded". Did you install it after downloading? If so just do as grandms said and click on the icon of the browser you want to open. If you haven't installed it let it import your internet explorer info when it asks.

Thank you bob414, no I haven't downloaded it yet I was trying to find out things before I get into something that might confuse me. Thanks for the heads up and if there is anything else that I need to know before I start downloading it please let me know.

    thirdfrt!!!

just download it and when doing the install it will ask if you want to import your IE settings and favorites etc say yes to all of that and it will set it up just like you have IE but will not touch your IE at all. When it ask if you want to make firefox default browser say no that way IE will still be your primary browser. Anytime you want to go online then you can choose to either click on the firefox icon or the IE icon and you can actually use both at the same time. If at any time you decide you want to change which one is default you can do that easily for either one.

Well raven I tried to download it and put it in a folder then I hit Run and I got a message telling me that it was corrupt, so I got it out of my computer. Now what?

    thirdfrt!!!

you can just download it again sometimes files get corrupted in the download and install process, download it, you can put it in a folder or on the desktop then go to it and double click it to begin the install.

    My pleasure.

(Quote thirdfrt) Well raven I tried to download it and put it in a folder then I hit Run and I got a message telling me that it was corrupt,

Same here so I used Bob414's link and all went well.
So glad this thread made me aware of having to get on the ball to install another browser before too late.

oh you know what it may be, go to the link I provided and where it says download firefox, in small print does it say it is for windows or for linux? I had not realized it but when I visit the firefox download page using my linux pc it must auto detect the linux and offer the linux version of the download. You would need the windows version of course not the linux. I had not realized it was doing that.

Ok, I will give it another try after my grandson leaves for home.

BTW, is anyone else having to log in everytime you come to this forum? I am having to log in everytime. I never had to do that before plus I am seeing a lot of ads that I didn't have before.

I am not sure if I have a problem here or not. I downloaded firefox and left it as standard should I have used custom to put in adblocker? I do need some help here. Oh yes there was no mention of importing anything and when I click on firefox it sends me to google to search. What's that all about? Should I delete firefox and start over? That would also include my trying to put in Adblock. I will wait until I hear from you. Thanks

    Hi,

Just want to let you know that I have Firefox in place and it is working really well. Thank you bob414 for the link to Firefox and raven thank you for your link as well and I have no idea why it showed up as corrupt but things like that happen and there is no control over it when it does. Still I very much appreciated it.

I am noticing that the words are a bit small, is there anyway to make the fonts on here a bit larger using Firefox?

    thirdfrt!!!

I change the font in all my browsers to Tahoma and it's usually fine at default font size 16. Which is slightly larger than the default font style.

Firefox the tools menu item.. if not visable press the Alt key... then click Tools / Options ... then the Content tab and you will see the fonts settigs.

Albert recommended an extension for firefox the other day that I decided to try and really like. Here's a link: NoSquint. After adding it to firefox you can right click on a page and click on 'Nosquint site settings' in the drop down menu. In the dialog box that opens you can pick a zoom level for the site and/or a zoom level for the text on that site. There are also some other things you can change. After you set them Nosquint will remember the settings whenever you visit the site.

    thirdfrt-
The Nosquint add-on is very handy, and I use it all the time as I move from site to site. The only thing you can't do is change the size of the fonts in the toolbars at the top of the browser, but I presume you are mainly concerned with the actual content of the web pages....

    Hi everyone,

I found this on a website that tells you how to do it in Firefox.

Open up FireFox and then go to view, then go to Zoom and you can Scroll down and select the 'ZOOM' option, then slide across, then down and select the 'ZOOM TEXT ONLY' option which should put a check mark by it.

Now scroll back up and select the 'ZOOM IN' option to enlarge the text that you view on any website. Each time you go back and select the 'ZOOM IN' feature, the text will get larger.

If you want to make the text smaller then go to Zoom Out
And to get back to where it was before you started simply select the 'RESET' option.

I did that here and it has stayed where I put it. You can do this as you move from site to site and it will stay the same as long as you have the check mark in "Zoom Text Only"

That is what I found in my search, you can check it out to see what you get, so far this has worked.

That worked GREAT for me. Thanks. I used size 22. Wish there was a size 21 tho.
Can't log in on FF so am on IE here.

Matter of personal preference I guess. Tahoma's OK but Verdana is easier on my eyes.

As Firefox was referred to several times on this thread:

v4.0 is still in beta, but v3.02.1343 was released today.

My fault. Too many tabs open, and too many articles being reviewed. It was not a release for FF, but rather a new version of CCleaner. As soon as I struck the Enter I knew I was wrong. My apologies for any confusion.
