Vista is just fine and IE8 is too. They both take some adjusting to and absolutely not saying you personally, but some users don't handle change well.

With the support clock ticking down XP users had better start being at least informed about Win7 as it is based on the Vista architecture, but more focused on performance rather than security. The sky is not falling though as XP will only slowly fade away as prior OSs have.

Run Windows Update. Select View Available Updates. Right click on IE8. Select Hide Update.

If in the future you wish to restore a hidden update just select the proper entry on the left panel of the update report.

You might want to check and see if you have the current version of cCleaner ....they had problems when Ie8 first came out and made a couple new versions quickly right then.

If you use the older version no matter if you marked as saved or not most vista's seemed to delete the cookies the momement you ran ccleaner. IE8 handles cookies differently, would think most cookie managers probably had problems.

This is simplier than it seems, but you need to read some first....

DA, my understanding is Win 7 is a stand alone OS. You don't need Vista at all since its a clean install. Why would it matter if someone wants to avoid Vista? I plan on Win 7, but will not replace XP with Vista.

I've seen several techie types mention they won't change to win7 for themselves after trying it because its essentially the same as vista which they already have spent the time making the way they like it.

Certainly many get it for free. I should have a courtesy copy avail but most likely will procrastinate installing it for a while after its official for same reasons. Certainly wont spend the money for an upgrade version. Its going to be more expensive than vista.

Jane you are correct W7 is a stand alone, but the foundation is Vista architecture. If someone wishes to avoid Vista that is their choice. I do anticipate anyone planning to upgrade a current XP system to Win7 to have some concerns. At this time unless dictated by some outside need I wouldn't replace XP with Vista either. However, it is my personal opinion that with the release of W7 users should be preparing to let XP ride off into the sunset. Once you get too far behind knowledge and experience wise its tough to catch up.

I speak from experience as I loved Win98 and hung on to it for as long as I could personally. I obtained my hands on experience, though limited by the IT people, with Win 2000 and XP at work. By doing so I lost a lot of learning time which could not be made up by reading.

I decided to upgrade to IE8 it seems to be ok the "my favourites" are still in place will have to check the "Web Slice Gallery" I did unistall yahoo tool bar and notice now Google search bar in the upper right corner.
Avast and PCtools firewall is doing it thing ok.

I have checked my XP machine at several different sources for its readiness for Win 7. The only thing I need is a better graphics card. So I'm really debating about making the change on the same machine so that I won't have to be bothered with moving everything from this one to a new one. It's not a change I'll be making soon, at any rate.

You also may be able to upgrade to windows7 directly from xp, you would need a Vista SP1 disk no windows key needed.

I would think more information will come out soon.

Yes Zep is correct you will be able to upgrade directly from XP to W7.

Bonnie please remember the original "minimum" system requirements announced for Vista were found to be inadequate. I would suggest anyone thinking of upgrading their XP system to W7 not make any hardware or peripheral changes until the new system requirements are validated. As I said, I envision the same types of concerns as users have had in the past. You can't take a model-T and automatically convert it into a Porsche.

Win7 is gonna need 2gb of memory before most will be happy - probably run sluggish on 1gb unless kept stripped down and in good condition ... many xp computers won't have even that much memory capacity.
