My HP Mini 1100, win7 starter, is now about 2 years old. As you know I just 'play around'- no movies, audios, just email surf- that type of thing. About 3 months ago it really slowed down. I backed it up to about a month earlier, but it didn't help. I use Time Warner wireless, usually have 1-2 'bars'.

The updates are downloaded auto, as I wouldn't know which ones to not allow or allow. (the update page is loooong...).

I use AVG, Malware, have Windows Firewall.

Hmmm what else do you need??

It has been taking longer and longer to turn on the computer and get where I can actually type in something to search. Most of the time a page will show up, but I can't use the scroll on the side for another minute or so- it doesn't 'turn blue' for awhile.

I have LOTS of room when I did the test- I would have to figure out how to do it again, but the percentage of usable space was almost all there.

Tonite I did the ping/speed test- twice. ping was 35ms. Download was 1.58/1.47, and upload was 1.08/1.9

Many, many times I get a 'cannot find page', 'webpage not responding', many times can't download something- I want to check what could speed up my computer, but when I try to download the test it will only be 2% downloaded after 15 minutes. I figure it isn't going to download, so I cancel it.

I have never had any problems when I do the AVG or Malware checks- always says no virus found.

What can I do to move along a little faster?

that is the problem with having windows 7 on the netbooks and mini's they just do not have the RAM memory to be able to run it and keep up for any time. My guess is that is what has happened to yours. Best you can go is go into your programs list and get rid of anything at all that you do not need do a purge on it and make sure there is not a bunch of stuff loading at startup that should not be. You can use startup lite to help with that. Be sure you do empty your recycle bin. Move any large files like videos,music and pictures to some other pc or thumbdrives.

You are updating malwarebytes prior to running your scans?
You might consider changing from AVG to MSE I think it is a little less resource hungry.
But it is really the nature of the beast with those little ones. That is why I only wanted xp on my Acer netbook I knew with the amount of memory on board widows 7 would have a hard time and those little processors are not made for that kind of work.

Thanks ravencajun,, I was wondering if there was a 'shelf-life' for the netbook... I will use the 'liteware' you gave me.
I know I can delete anything that I dont use, but which ones are safe for me to delete? I am afraid I will uninstall something that the computer needs!

MIssion Accomplished! First, let me explain, then I will tell you what worked. From what I have been told there are inkjet transparencies, but you have to paint the reverse side or the picture does not show well in all settings. I wanted the picture to "pop" and I also wanted the picture to appear that it was suspended inside the ornament. Plus, I was given some black and white copier transparencies. Transparencies are costly and come in huge packages. I only need a few sheets, so I started with what I had and free is always good if you can make it work. And to make matters even harder, I always had a problem with one-sided ornaments because they always seem to want to turn to the backside, so I wanted the picture on both sides. Now to what I did that worked. I found my picture and sized it. Then I copied the picture into my Paint program and flipped it and transferred that back. So now I have the same picture that I can print and use back to back. I printed the pictures onto photo paper (next time I would probably find some very light weight photo or glossy paper). I took the printed pictures and stuck them to one side of double sided carpet tape. Then I cut out the pictures trying to keep the same spacing around each one. I matched them back to back as close as I could trimmming here and there until they were very close. (Now, this is where I probably should have taken a little more time, but it was after midnight and they were looking pretty good :)) Then I removed the backing of the tape off one picture and centered it on my film (that had been cut to fit the inside of the ornament) and pressed all the edges. I repeated this with the other picture on the other side of the film matching this outline to the other picture outline. After pressing firmly in place I carefully rolled it around a pencil and inserted it into the ornament. It was a little hard because of the thickness of two photos and the film to roll around the pencil but the carpet tape held and it worked. I accomplished my goal on this project - the pictures really pop even if the ornament turns around. Hope this made sense. This was suppose to be my practice project before attempting memory ornaments in honor of my daughter. I did learn alot but will probably invest in the inkjet transparency film for those.

Get Form 1040-ES for 2009. It has what should be the correct tax RATES for 2009. Figure what is your yearly salary, estimated interest income, whatever else you may have. Self-employment, even, but then you have to include Schedule C and SE. Figure your personal exemptions and deductions as best you can based on either itemization or standard deduction for your filing status. Calculate what is the tax liability against the rates in 1040-ES and divide that by the number of pay periods you have. That tells you have much tax to withhold from each check. I've been doing this for years on a spreadsheet, correcting the numbers as the year progresses. Some things are difficult to estimate, such as dividends and capital gains for income, or unexpected medical expenses for deduction itemization and any last-minute changes to the tax code. I AM the payroll department at work, so I can adjust my withholding whenever I want. I purposely try to have a small balance due. One year I owed or was refunded (don't recall which) $26. For 2008 tax year I owe $115. 2007 tax year I got a $1,055 refund, tripped-up by some medical expenses for an incident in June that I couldn't predict if it'd all be settled by end of the year (which it was, by just a few days).

In regards to Brickeyes comments on technology, I could not agree more. I think Brickeye and I are about the same age (59) and thinking back I am amazed at what was science fiction when i was a kid but what is commonplace today. Just a few examples" When we were in school a word processor was a manual device made of wood and graphite with an eraser on the opposite end..LOL. When they landed men on the moon complex math was still being done on slide rules, now I have a wristwatch with a built in calculator that can perform functions that were unheard of on mainframe computers in the early to mid 60's. In Jr.High school every kid dreamed of owning a 6 transistor pocket AM radio receiver. (I actually acquired one by caddying at the local golf course for the whole summer to earn the necessary $36 to buy it.) minimum wage was $1.55 and top union scale was $5/hr. Color TV was still in its infancy and most stations did not broadcast color until the early 60's. FM radio was solely classical and elevator music and of very little interest to young people. When I entered the Air Force in 1966 I worked with a Univac 1066-II mainframe computer system that had a hard drive which was 10 feet long and weighed over 3 tons, yet it only had 66megs of memory, by contrast I have 80 gigs on this desktop and 60gigs in my laptop, both of which are obsolete by state of the art standards. While on the subject of laptops, the only laptops devices we had then was a TV tray for dinner....LOL Cordless tools were totally unheard of. State of the art automotive safety was a padded dashoard and a seat belt. I remember when they came out with a digital clock that had rotating flip cards with the numbers on them and we thought that was the rage. For all you Star Trek fans,,go back and look closely at the first generation scenes, even the spaceship Enterprise did not have LED or Quart Crystal displays. When we were in school the interstate highways system was still a future dream being discussed in Popular Mechanics Magazine. A virus made you sick and spam was that cheap nasty canned meat that you mother made you eat whether you liked it or not, suprisingly I acquired a taste for it and still enjoy it occassionally...LOL. A conferance call was listening in on someone elses phone call on a party line, but don't get caught. Rich people had a garage door opener, the rest of us were lucky to have a garage and if we did it was doubtful if the old doors would swing properly. Gas water heaters were not vented to the outside and many had open steel vessels with no insulation. The house I lived in there was no thermocouple on the gas control. alexa Many bagged mixes labeled as 'well-fast draining' are unfortunately not, and one only finds out after potting the plant in it (that is why I don't buy any, but make my own :). If buying any, see if there is ingredients label. If there is sand and/or lots of peat listed, I would pass on it. If you still have some C&S mix left, you could sift I as I suggested. Get a kitchen sieve from a dollar store, sift all small stuff out (could go on garden beds or compost heap if you have either). Get a bag of perlite, sift the same way (do not breathe the dust). Add more perlite, until you have approx. 50/50 mix. That will dry up much better.

1. Go to Windows Update, and install the important updates. This may require you to restart your computer one or more times according to the instuctions. I also install the optional updates, except for Windows Live, which I choose not to use.

2. Run the Disk Cleanup program...Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Then go back and check it again. Make sure all items have been cleaned up. If not, check the box next to the item, and run Disk Cleanup again. There are times when I have to run Disk Cleanup 2-3 times to get everything removed. I usually check and run the Disk Cleanup utility every 7-10 days, depending on my usage.

3. Update and run your anti-virus program at least once a week!!!

4. Run the Disk Defragment utility every 2-3 months. It is in System Tools with Disk Cleanup.

I support the thought of regular maintenance, but to rely on the Windows utilities is not advisable as there are other applications which do a much better job.

CCleaner for one is much better for a clean up. And, as an example Defraggler is much better for defragmentation.

My thinking for the original poster is to just use the utilities that are already available in the OS without having to add any additional programs.

Not a problem.

In this specific case the Windows utilities will not hurt anything. They just won't do as good a job as others, and potentially not contribute anything to the resolution of the concern.

My thinking is if a user is trying to resolve a concern it is wisest to take advantage of the best possible remedies available.

I suspect that the steps I listed above will help to improve the condition being experienced by the original poster. What would also help improve the condition is if there is an opportunity to increase the amount of RAM in the computer.
