Need more help on the memory ornaments fast!

I have started my practice memory ornaments project. This is suppose to be a birthday present for my husband on Thanksgiving Day. And boy do I need help!:)

What I have done so far:

I cut out the size for the ornament on transparency film.

I printed on the lightest weight photo paper that I had two small graphic and cut them out. They are both about 1-1/2" x 1-1/2".

I glued them onto the center of the film.

The problem is that the edges won't stay stuck to the film when I roll it around the pencil to insert. I have tried two different types of glue - the one lets go on the edges when I insert. The only other kind of glue that I have is Elmers All Purpose and it is way too runny and it does not dry clear no matter what the bottle says! So, if when dry, it actually does stay stuck, the film around the picture is cloudy from excess glue.

Any suggestions? Would a glue gun work? Or what kind of glue is quick to set and works for paper on plastic? Do I need a glue that is softer when dry (not sure what adjective I am looking for)? I was wondering if contact paper would work or would it cloud the picture or make it too thick to get into the bulb?

The one that I did try and actually put into the bulb looks really cool with the graphic "suspended" in there, but the edges did not stay tight to the film and are slightly curling forward.

I hope that someone can offer some suggestions. I will check this post tomorrow before I am done at work, so I know what to go and buy after work to finish these tomorrow night.

Why don't you print right on the transparency? That's what I do!

I'm wondering the same as deb. Why glue the transparency to the photo paper? I would either print on the transparency (must be for ink jets if that's the type printer you use), or print on the photo paper and insert in the ball.

I knew as soon as I seen this, that is was a neighbor issue, been there done that, I mentioned forsythia to you on another thread, but now that I see this I wanted to add that you ought to plant rose bushes in a row, the ones that have the largest thorns you can find, in case he tries to come any closer. we had a guy that lives diagonal from us that was standing outside of his door with a video camera, DH sees him while he was messing in the fridge (keep in mind we have a giant white pine tree, that is over our kitchen window) DH from the fridge, starts bobbing and weaving to try to see through the tree at this guy to see what he is doing and he jumped back in the house with the camera, now isn't that spooky? I hate to keep the sun out of my house, but I really think mini blinds are the best thing invented, and they are inexpensive.

I notice your post is a week old, so you may have already made a decision...nevertheless, if it were me, I'd lose the boards you put the sealant on. Use them for something else (to defray cost)...fencing or trellising of ornamentals, whatever, as long as you keep them away from your source of food. Don't you have timber yards or sawmills there where you can buy oak boards? I bought rough-cut 2"X12", l6 ft. long oak boards in my area (Maryland-Virginia), for about $6 or $7 apiece, 10 years ago, that are nearly as solid as they were when purchased. Of course I wouldn't dream of going to Home Depot (or some such similar retailer) for oak boards, but we have lumber yards and sawmills in rural areas that will cut oak boards to your specifications at a reasonable price...and 2" means 2" at a sawmill, not 1 1/2". I happen to have capped the 2" oak boards with cheap 2X4's (pine) as added insurance against decay (and also to have a place to plant my rear end while working in the raised beds), and I have no problem with such beds lasting 15-20 years, or so. To each his/her own, but oak is abundant in my area, and probably outlasts pine 5 to 1, so I wouldn't think of using pine for raised beds. Also, I can't work in a raised bed that's more than 39-40" wide without climbing into it, so I limit all my beds to that width (and I'm 6'5"). I realize (and read in this forum) that people make much wider beds, which they walk around in, but one of the chief benefits of raised beds (in my mind) is to avoid tramping and compacting the soil. Again, to each his/her own, but I have raised beds that never have had a foot in them since they were built. So, my suggestion is to remove what you have and use it elsewhere (not around something you'll eat). Find reasonably priced rough-cut oak boards (they'll last so long you won't have to worry about "sealing" them), and make your beds an appropriate width (so you won't have to climb into them).

Then I'd have to disagree with you both. At least here a Coralburst or Firebird will quickly grow to lets say 8' wide within 7 years. Then may be 15' wide at the age of 25. Another example Musclewood. They typically grow to 8 to 10' tall in the first 6 years. They may only be 15 to 20' wide after 25 years. Another example is Pagoda Dogwood. They typically grow 8' to 10' wide in the first 7 years. Might be 15' wide at the age of 20. Another example is Cornus mas...... Those are examples of why I disagree with "the faster it get(s) to 10' by 10', the faster it will shoot right past (that)." as a blanket statement. We're not talking Silver Maples, Tulip Trees, Dawn Redwood etc. here in my examples.

I can't think of any ornamental grass which will fit your description of needs. Almost all of the tall ones need to be cut back to the ground every spring, and do not regain their mature height until sometime in mid-late summer. I also cannot think of any other sort of perennial which will grow from small pot size to privacy height in it's first year. Most of them take at least 3 years to reach mature height, in good growing conditions. Shrubs take even longer. Climbing roses need something to climb on. If zoning permits it, you could build a trellis of appropriate height, and install fast-growing flowering vines like Morning Glory. The trellis would provide a bit of privacy until the vines fill in every year.

I don't get attaching the photo picture to the transparency
either, why not just use the picture printed on paper, that's
what I did.

MIssion Accomplished! First, let me explain, then I will tell you what worked.

From what I have been told there are inkjet transparencies, but you have to paint the reverse side or the picture does not show well in all settings. I wanted the picture to "pop" and I also wanted the picture to appear that it was suspended inside the ornament. Plus, I was given some black and white copier transparencies. Transparencies are costly and come in huge packages. I only need a few sheets, so I started with what I had and free is always good if you can make it work. And to make matters even harder, I always had a problem with one-sided ornaments because they always seem to want to turn to the backside, so I wanted the picture on both sides.

Now to what I did that worked. I found my picture and sized it. Then I copied the picture into my Paint program and flipped it and transferred that back. So now I have the same picture that I can print and use back to back. I printed the pictures onto photo paper (next time I would probably find some very light weight photo or glossy paper). I took the printed pictures and stuck them to one side of double sided carpet tape. Then I cut out the pictures trying to keep the same spacing around each one. I matched them back to back as close as I could trimmming here and there until they were very close. (Now, this is where I probably should have taken a little more time, but it was after midnight and they were looking pretty good :))
Then I removed the backing of the tape off one picture and centered it on my film (that had been cut to fit the inside of the ornament) and pressed all the edges. I repeated this with the other picture on the other side of the film matching this outline to the other picture outline. After pressing firmly in place I carefully rolled it around a pencil and inserted it into the ornament. It was a little hard because of the thickness of two photos and the film to roll around the pencil but the carpet tape held and it worked. I accomplished my goal on this project - the pictures really pop even if the ornament turns around.

Hope this made sense. This was suppose to be my practice project before attempting memory ornaments in honor of my daughter. I did learn alot but will probably invest in the inkjet transparency film for those.
