I downloaded AVG a couple of days ago on my XP. Didn't have any problems.I ran a full scan and it seems to be O.K.

You can only run one antivirus program at any one time. Sounds like it sees a 2nd antivirus program running and knows there will be a conflict.

I don't know your computer, and can't see it... but sounds like you need to unistall your existing antivirus and run the appropiate clean up tool after - before installing your download.

AVG is the only antivirus program I have. I had Norton for years, then switched to AVG 3-4 years ago, and use nothing else. Guess I'm going to try again and just ignore the warning.

I ask questions and rarely try to answer anything, especially about computers. That being said I'll relay a friend story, as I understand it. He got a new computer two years ago. It had Norton on a trial basis. It seems he installed a different anti-virus program. Two years later he's still complaining about Norton popping up. Could he get rid of it by running "search" and then delete everything? Good luck.

Chandler, it is essential to run the dedicated removal tool from Norton for the version of Norton that was on the pc, what is happening is that there are essentially 2 antivirus programs on the pc that is a no no they can cause serious conflicts and problems. Anyone that got a pc that had any type of trial or free antivirus program on it then decides to go with another brand must search for the specific removal tool for that AV and use it or use a tool like REVO uninstaller to search for it and remove all aspects of it.

you want to be sure you get the freeware version where ever you get it from.

my question to leslie is did you follow those methods when you removed your Norton from your pc? if not remnants could now be coming back to haunt you. Always run the tool they provide to uninstall it.

I totally removed Norton before installing AVG. I've had no problems through several AVG updates since I first installed it until I got the warning during this latest update/installation.

ok I assume by totally removed Norton you mean you did go to the Norton site and get the removal tool for it and used that and did not just use the remove from add remove programs on your pc.

I would try the AVG download again see if you continue to get that message. sometimes when a download takes that long something can happen during the process and cause a corruption in it. Could you use someone else's computer that has a fast connection to download Avg to a CD or DVD and install it from that on your pc?
Or you could change to AVAST free which in my opinion is a better product these days.
