I think half the fun with these swaps is finding out who your swap partner is. I was lucky enough to receive from JimTex (James). James, I love everything that you sent and will always think of you when I cook Thai food. Thank you for your patience with me posting this. Your package arrived just as we were leaving for the cottage for the weekend. I quickly notified Ann that it arrived so you would know the package arrived safely. Everything was beautifully wrapped and I am saving the wrapping paper. LOL

James sent me a wonderful cookbook -- Thailand The Beautiful Cookbook. This has beautiful photos and is a cookbook that I will treasure and put on display. James knew that I was interested in trying some Thai cooking, and IÂm going to love using the recipes from this cookbook. Thanks James!

James made me an exceptional item. IÂve always admired the decorative dried gourds at the craft shows, and guess whatÂ..James is ones of those talented individuals that paints gourds. The gourd is a work of art that I will always treasure. I canÂt thank James enough! Again, I am so glad James was my swap partner.

And I received a bottle of wine. We didnÂt waste any time and have already tried the wine. ItÂs a good sipping wine on a rainy and cold Sunday afternoon. The wine was produced in JamesÂ town, on the Gulf Coast. Not bad for a Gulf Coast wine! LOL Joe is in the kitchen preparing Buffalo chicken (his signature dish from college days), and I am sipping wine and typing this thank you note. LOL

I've been posting here off and on since 1998 and a lot of folks have come and gone. I guess it's the nature of the beast. We're fortunate that Karl posts quite often and another veteran is Rosebud who I'd like to hear from more often. As mentioned above Cindy was always a hoot to hear from, and there's lots of others. I like the idea of treating each other well, but the problems that have happened here over the years remind me of what sometimes goes on inside local Rose Societies. There always seems to be someone who wants to prove they are better, smarter, etc. Keep up the good thoughts and this Forum will continue. Chuck

Aga 6-4: Please tell me what you really know about it

Well, I have to kind of chuckle over the small oven comments. One of the main reasons why my friends think I'm "overdoing" it with the Aga is because I am single, don't cook professionally and don't often cook for large crowds. My retort to them concerning the 6-4's oven size is that, for a person in my situation, the smaller ovens may make a lot of sense. Similar thinking may be found amongst those of us who prefer dish drawers over dishwashers because they give us some option in choosing the sizes and numbers of binw we may actually need per wash cycle. Yes, I know that argument doesn't work in the reverse --especially if I want to cook a 20 lb turkey in an Aga 6-4. But, again, given my lifestyle, I don't foresee my having that particular dilemma. :) As far as expense is concerned, the 39" Aga 6-4 DF is pretty comparable to the 36" DF Wolf. Both are pretty expensive in my book! However, if I purchase an Aga floor model, the final cost to me will actually be considerably lower than the brand new 36" DF Wolf. Soshh: Can't do the 48 Bluestar! I'm trying to recover some space I gained from retiring the antique stove (54" in size) for more cabinetry/counters. Please keep your fingers crossed that the 6-4 owners will soon respond with lots more for product information! Fori: Love that photo of Uncle Toad's range. That's exactly the look I've been pining for in my own kitchen! I'm just wanting a bit more assurances on performance. Although I did some research and found those old posts from Aga 6-4 owners before starting this thread, I still find the information from current consumers to be relatively scarce. Here's hoping some of those same members who posted long ago might see this new discussion and provide some updated information and that more recent Aga 6-4 owners will chime in as well.

It's what you feel is a good deal that counts when buying. Selling is a different issue, and it takes time. We sold vintage for years, and Ebay was the WORST resource EVER for uninformed buyers and sellers. What seems like a minor difference can be a major one when it comes to price (well, it looks *almost* like mine). Additionally, it seems that people assume everyone else listing the widget knows what they're doing, when they might just be flying blind too. The only good comparisions on Ebay are exactly the same as your item with BIDS-buy it nows and listings with 0 bids mean ziltch. And archived listings from more than even a few months ago might or might not be a good resource, as certain items ebb and flow like the tide (for a while, you couldn't touch a Duaflex camera, they were HOT for TTV photography, I think that's died down now-we don't sell vintage anymore-no space-so I haven't kept up on the trends). Then you've got sellers that inheritated something they were always told was "worth a lot of money". Well, maybe it was, once. And now...you can give it away, maybe (like those console radio/record players or sets of china, except certain patterns). Also, it depends on your location. We live in NYS. Where we live, I could sell something...say...an old wooden crate for $10, whereas it might sell for $30 in NYC. Vintage prices here are WAYY lower than there.

Don't Know if You Can Really 'Train' Palamedes Cats to Eat Sassafras..

You understood me exactly right, four. It would be better for palamedes swallowtails if they'd lay at least part of their eggs on sassafras, which, so far, hasn't suffered from the red bay disease. The two cats in the picture both ate a LOT of sassafras, pupated, and made perfect palamedes swallowtails, one male and one female. I've known for a long time that palamedes cats would gladly eat sassafras, but I've never found any palamedes eggs or cats on sassafras, so the females apparently don't consider it for egg laying, at least so far. Unfortunately, I've seen very few palamedes swallowtail adults since those two emerged. I saw one a couple of weeks ago, and I think I saw one crossing the road today. I've looked on the redbay regrowth at the base of the dead trees and haven't found any eggs or cats. I found a spicebush cat on some sassafras in my garden, but it's definitely a spicebush cat. James, I love that gourd! I'm sure Debbie already has a place of honour for it to be displayed. And that Thai cookbook looks very good too, wit a beautiful cover and presentation of food. And I'm sure the wine will be a hit with Deb as well.

The gourd is stunning! What a special gift to receive. It's absolutely gorgeous.

I was unaware of any wineries around Houston, but I have had good wine from Texas. That winery appears to be in Galveston County, and it sounds very interesting.

I assume cookbook is a continuation of The Beautiful Cookbook series. I have the Mexico edition (published before the Thai book), and it truly is a beautiful cookbook and also my favorite Mexican cookbook. That's a great choice, and good Thai cookbooks are somewhat rare, I think - at least I haven't seen any that would compare to the one you received.

Debbie, Oh, when I saw your thread title, I knew it would be a great package. I received a WONDERFUL package from James in my first swap. I think of him nearly weekly as I use something he sent me. James, terrific package!

I agree, that gourd is stunning, I can easily see it with some of Debbie's New York fall hardwood leaves, all reds and golds for a wonderful Thanksgiving display.

The cookbook is beautiful and it appears that Debbie has already "appreciated" the wine a couple of times. (grin)

We sure have some talented people on this forum.

Marvelous swap items, James. Kudos on the hand painted gourd - that is certainly original and beautiful. I love that cookbook series with great photography and authentic recipes.

Teresa, we didn't finish the bottle. LOL It is on the sweeter side, so one glass was plenty. It was nice for sipping before dinner.

Ditto what everyone else said. I called DH in to look at the gourd; we both think it's beautiful! The cookbook looks good, too. I'm going to have to start trying some of these Texas wines. Great job, Jim. Deb is sure lucky to have received this package.

Aha, more hidden talent out there -- that gourd is GORGEOUS. I have a couple of books from that series of cookbooks and they are both great - am sure the Thai one is as well. Enjoy the wine! Very thoughtful package, James - in awe of your talent.

More Texas Wine!! I love it!! That winery is about 35 minutes from my house, I've been there to taste and their wines are quite nice. They also have live music on their property sometimes but we've never made it there for that. Texas actually has a lot of wineries, and some darn good wine!! SORRY just had to throw in some Texas bragging there.

That gourd is way-cool, Jim! Beautiful.

Oh Debbie lucky you receiving from James. I have some wonderful treasures that I received from James and his lovely wife in a long ago swap. Very special to me is the little Eagle jug he sent me.

That gourd is gorgeous! It must have taken a long while to do, very special. The cookbook looks lovely! I know James would have "angst'd" over that! LOL Texas wine you say, guess it has "BIG" flavour! LOL
