Wow, I sure do remember Arthur Godfrey. and remember when Mike Douglas had an afternoon talk show? I really liked him, back in the day. I even remember listening to the radio soaps with my Grandmother in the late 1950's. She liked Ma Perkins.

How about Your Hit Parade with Snookie Lanson, Giesle McKenzie and Dorothy Collins? The original Toast of the Town which later became the Ed Sullivan Show. Red Skelton and his many characters.

I loved Dinah Shore and especially her "See The USA in Your Chevrolet, America's The Greatest Land of All" commercial.

Let's not forget Gunsmoke and Uncle Miltie.

I remember mornings standing outside in Rockefeller center, looking into the window at Dave Garroway, Jack Lescoulie and Barbara Walters doing the TODAY show.

What a walk down memory lane today!! I remember most of the ones mentioned. My favorite aunt's radio soap was The Romance of Helen Trent.

Remember Art Linkletter? Who was the person whose morning radio show would tell you to get up and march around the breakfast table?

I had forgotten all about Dinah Shore. I remember she would have Bert Reynolds (ahem) on alot and be very smitten with him. Of course I didn't know that they had a huge affair going on back then.
Ed Sullivan was another great Sunday night "shew" and always meant the end of the weekend and back to school on Monday morning. Also a memory as I type this was my mother telling my brother to move back from the TV or he would ruin his eyes. Little did we know, he couldn't see his hand in front of his face and that is why he sat so close!!

Sheri Lewis and Lambchop, and the ABC after school specials.
The specials were geared towards kids, living normal everyday lives, and getting over bumps and heartaches.

How about Kate Smith singing God Bless America?? I remember arthur godfreys talent show.We used to play it as kids using the pitchfork as our microphone.And then there's Howdy Doody,The Lone ranger,Amos "n" Andy,Ted Mack.Inner sanctum on the radio.I remember Mama,loved that show.I also loved Julius La Rosa on arthur godfrey.

with grandpappy Amos, remember he walked with a limp and sometimes a cane? His real name was Walter ??? Brenner (maybe), can't seem to remember his last name. My grandmother would tell me that people that walked with a limp, or used a cane or crutches lived a long, long time. To me grandpappy Amos was Ancient.. LOL. I was young and I believed her. LOL.

Anybody remember 15 MINUTE shows as opposed to 30 or 60 minute ones?

The Lone Ranger. Father Knows Best. Davy Crockett. Zorro.

I remember when the evening news was 15 minutes long...When I was a toddler, The Breakfast Club came to our town. I didn't know what it was but my mother and friends went to the show. .

We still have 15 minute shows, today. That is what we get to watch between commercials, of an hour show. LOL Dottie

You got that right, Dottie! There were also 15 minute shows that were on, I think, after that 15 minutes of news at 6 in the evening to fill that 1/2 hour time slot. Liberace did a 15 minute spot and there was a guy who wore a turbin and played the organ that was often on in that spot. He was middle eastern and had a one word name. Anyone remember it?
Yes, those were the good ol' days, when the family could sit down together and watch without fear of the content of any show.

Walter Brennan played in The Real McCoys.
I still watch Rifleman, the Lone Ranger and the original episodes of Lassie with Tommy Rettig.

Do you remember Gun Smoke, & Palidin? They were my Dad's favorite shows. Oh, and Amos and Andy on the radio every night at 7:00pm (they were on in the 40s and 50s!). :o)

kathi_mdgd do you remember she sang that song on her show. It always opened with her singing "When The Moon Comes Over The Mountain" and in the background they had a moon rising over a mountain.

She truly was an amazing singer and did you know she never had any training? Too bad we don't have singers like her anymore. The stuff they play now a day is totally incomprehensible.

How about Gale Storm in My Little Margie? Do you remember Ida Lupino opening the door and swirling her dress as she entered the room? I forget what show that was--Mystery Theatre or something similar.

Glenda/Maryann, I think the show where they guessed occupations was "What's My Line?" Don't remember who hosted it but Arlene Francis and Dorothy Kilgallan were panelists. When it was a famous person they blindfolded the panel.

Yes I remember all of them...Arthur Godfrey had a morning show that everyone loved. Did anyone mention Art Linkletter...I don't have time to read all the responses.

I remember watching Queen for a Day with my grandma and the women would get on there and cry and tell how bad their lives were and the winner would get a new washing machine or something....LOL

Queen for a Day was a fun one....they would crown her and everything.
Art Linkletter was a classic. I always got tickled when one of the kids said something so off the wall. He would just about split a gut. You could tell a lot of the kids had been prompted by their parents, who were in the audience, and then they would be so honest, and blow the whole thing!! Kids....gotta love 'em.

Art Linkletter's was "Kids Say the Darndest Things" - and he later published a book with the same name, didn't he?

Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone ... with Rochester and the Maxwell car ... Jack stayed at age 39 for years. Gentle humour and warmth.

George Burns and Gracie Allen, also gentle humour.

Fred Allen and all of the characters on Allen's Alley - rather sharper humour.

Bob Hope ... who was a real comic ... and could be somewhat risque (for the times).

The Shadow (with Orson Welles) ... and I loved the "Inner Sanctum", with its squeaking door, as well.

Lux Radio Theatre.

And one where a train came from western New York (or the midwest), down the Hudson ... and into Grand Central Station!

And for Canadians ... the Happy Gang, with Bert Perl, Eddie Allen and Kathleen Stokes on the organ.

Great memories.

Dinah Shore was the first celebrity to date a much younger man, Burt Renolds. If she could see us now. You go girl. It's about time that women do what men have gotten away with for ages.
