mine is still standing...they did finally replaced the gym and pool...(hollywood hs, ca) but wow... have the demographics changed!

My High School has been refurbished remodeled, and almost rebuilt to enlarge, but we didn't have our reunions there. Always had them in a local rented place.

My class of '42 has had a reunion every year since, although I did not get an announcement of one for this year. There had been discussions about stopping them since so many have passed on or can't/don't drive anymore and live a long distance away. I haven't been to any for many years though. I won't drive back to that area of northern Virginia.

So the school still stands, but the class of '42 is dwindling away.

This is Tom's reunion. The actual dinner dance is being held at a nearby, very nice country club. But, they had planned on a tour of the school before the dinner.

Most of the buildings in my past are no longer standing.

Most of the buildings I worked in have been torn down.

My high school was brand new. We were the first graduating class, 1960.

Fortunately my husband was in the first graduating class of a brand new high school (1969). I was two years behind him. It should be a few more years before the school gets demolished.

I run our high school alumni site. I was contacted a few years ago by the San Jose Mercury News when the school was 25 years old. They were doing a story on the changes in demographics...and wow they have changed! I supplied the newspaper with old yearbook photos and was interviewed. When DH and I attended, there were no black families, a couple Asian families and a handful of Hispanic families. Twenty-five years later, Caucasians looked to be in the minority or close to it.

My high school was really old when I went to it. It was torn down about 10 years ago. No a/c in that one. 3 flights of stairs to go up and down every day, and between classes. No wonder I had a good figure back then.

My high school is still standing, but they did a major renovation about 10 years ago. They took away the front steps,for onne thing. I was invited to a tour of the "new' school but didn't make it, as I live 450 miles away!

I went to my 5-year reunion and that's it - never went to any others. I graduated from high school in 1968 - my school was new then, but it's been so long ago that it's probably a shopping center by now! LOL

Last summer was my 50th year class reunion and we toured the school before our dinner/dance at a nearby country club.
The Senior Fountain our class gave to the school is still standing.
I really enjoyed the tour.

You are old when you visit you old home place and find a mobile home parked next to the yard, the house is being used for storage and a chicken roost, there is no trace of your grade school, the old highschool building has big crack running from the foundation up to the roof line and it is in danger of forced closure due to lack of funds for the teacher's pension fund, the church you and your parents attended was closing it doors for good, the business section in the town has failed, all the country stores are gone, and everyone's a stanger. The only viable business is the funeral home and it has plenty of business. The gas station you worked at as a youth has changed owners and brand names at least 6 times. And most everyone you knew in highschool are retired!

Sadly, you find your social life revolving around funerals.

You check the obits everyday because you find more and more people you know there.

The school system I attended was disolved back in 1990. : (
The old buildings are still there, the high school is empty and from what I can see from the outside is slowly deteriorating. Of the two grade schools one was made into apartments and the other one had sat empty for a long time but the town has now fixed it up as a community center. Next month my class will be having our 35th reunion there. Ours was a small school and everyone knew everyone. Our class likes to have reunions every 5 years and I enjoy them a lot. We don't have fancy dances or the like. We just have a nice meal and lots of conversations.

My original Continuation School, Grades 9 - 12, and we went to the city for 13, was closed in 1949 and, with major addition, turned into an elementary school.

They held reunions every few years for a long time ... and rather than being a small group over in a corner, overwhelmed by the more recent grad groups ... we were the big cheeses.

They held one in 1999, with just over 100 present (probably 1/3 - 1/2 of them still living not too far away) at a local golf club to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the closing - and said that would be the last.

As for awareness of getting old ...

... you walk down the hall into another room ...

... now ... what was it that I came for??
