Routers don't send out messages. It sounds like a scam.

If your internet communications seem "normal" (with the same speed and responsiveness as you are accustomed to in your home) then your router is likely just fine.

Had you typed in the address and given them permission to look at your computer you would have had to pay or get your computer locked.

A lady I know did this but then said she could not pay the fee so they simply locked up her computer. Remember she had already allowed them in.

Thank you both for your responses....I know not to let anyone have access to my computer, but I was sort of worried about the router thing....I need to read up more on routers.

If you are concerned just call the router company. I have called mine a couple of times, when I had questions. My feelings are if it's working don't worry about it.

Routers don't send out error messages to India and guys in India don't call you to express their concern about such things.

Routers just "route" that is that they help move bits of information from point A to point B. For the most part, they're either going to work or not work.

The call was just a scam. Don't worry about it and move on.

Lots in the news lately about routers and many of the popular ones have some problems with remote access by the bad guys.

Not the usual fake Microsoft calls but it's definitely another version of the scam. Didn't get a call like that but I would surely recognize the scam if I get one.

I recently had those guys call here recently..
I wasn't too nice to the first caller.
I was not patient at all with the 2nd one the next day or two when he called.
In all I think about 5 calls, spaced out a few days apart before they have seemed to given up. And maybe finally removed my name from the ^%$#@n call list like I asked each time.

One guy I said give me your fathers phone number, he asked why.. I said I want to sell him something for his computer... he said his dad didn't have a computer.. I said neither do I ! Don't call me again.

Glad you shared this info here. I find it really helpful when people share warning about phone scams. Just last week,I read about this lottery scam call with a new twist reported at http://www.callercenter.com. It's alarming how clever these scammers are in perpetrating their scams. No wonder a lot of people still fall for them.

A lot of people are trusting. When I first started hearing about these scams, I asked my husband if the bank called and said they were having problems with some accounts and they needed our banking information...."would you tell them what they wanted to know?" He said "yes". Of course I warned him.

In this context, Emma, I'd use a different word - maybe a 4 letter word that begins with D, or a six letter word that begins with S.

If you encountered someone in a parking lot who said - "I'm doing an investigation, I need to take your wallet (purse) to our station around the corner, wait here, I'll be back in 10 minutes" or "There's been fraudulent credit card activity at this store, I need your SSN and to see you credit card and drivers license", how would most people react?

Right, these are ruses and pretty transparent ones at that. So when something similar happens over the phone.........?

Well, I "had" read somewhere about hackers and routers...I just wasn't sure. But using my head...if they had hacked me, they wouldn't be asking for remote control. I usually hang up on calls like this, but I was curious as to what he was going to ask for...

They most certainly don't know. But the majority of US households have internet access and I'd guess the majority of users have routers. When you're paying employees cents per hour, they can make dead end calls, it doesn't cost much.

There's no "list" to ask to be taken off, they just make calls to phones in numerical sequence. When you hear a call that might be a scam, just hang up quietly. Legit callers will call back and you can apologize for accidentally hitting the hang-up button.

They usually say My comp is downloading files...when I ask what files they don't seem to understand the question.

When they ask if I'm at the computer I say, "No." Another concept they fail to grasp.

I told one there was no 'windows' key and he said I must have a Mac. I reminded him he had just told me my Windows comp was bad. The darn guy hung up on me! Can you imagine such impudence?

Same guy has been phoning me for years. When I say I recognize his voice he gets defensive.

If I admit there are no yellow flags he about comes unglued.
