router question

We originally had a 'wired' pc connected to the internet...ie a wire came out of the wall and directly into the pc.

We now have a wireless router on a timer. Wireless is 'off' after 11pm each night. The line comes out the wall then into the router then into our 'wired' pc.

The trouble is that I want the 'wired' pc available at all times and when the router is 'off' the signal does not pass thru to the pc.

Is there a way around this? A splitter for the signal from the wall? WOuld that slow access to the net?

Who is controlling this router with a "timer"? Are you a school some something?

I think there shutting down the wireless signal at 11pm to make sure the kids are not connecting at nite. It seems to me there should be a way to connect another router not a wireless router but just a regular router where your connection would come from that way when the wireless router shuts down at 11 your still connected to the second non wireless router.

yes a router provides a hardware firewall in your network, you should also of course have a software firewall setup on your pc, so that is one way that a router can provide added security. If it is a wireless setup then using the strongest security settings on the router is also added protection.

Terry, I looked around in bios - entered several places but never found "Wake on Lan..." It's a little scary in there! :) RC, I checked for scheduled tasks and found nothing listed that named any software on my computer. I wasn't that concerned about Vista waking up as I was that someone had broken through my security. It doesn't sound like anyone thinks that has happened, so I'm greatly relieved. Thank you. Zep, my computer automatically goes to sleep if I don't do it manually. I never know the best procedure to follow - shut the pc down or keep it on all the time! Thanks, everyone. I appreciate your help.

I truly appreciate all your help mikie!It is so difficult for me to explain exactly what is going on.I only know computer basics and just enough terminology to be confusing. LOL Currently,I am connecting to the internet by going to Earthlink.net and clicking on the set up button. I am accessing my e-mail through Earthlink.net, too. That is the only way I can connect to webpages.I can no longer connect using on desktop icons or by going to internet connections. The problem started when I allowed a Belkin auto setup to program my wireless router to my computer. Even if I disconnect the router and try to connect the way I did before the router I still can not connect through my computer. The only reason I mentioned proxy server was that when earthlink had me join teamviewer4, teamviewer4 stated I was on a proxy server and that I needed to connect with my computer connection. I am basing my statement on that info. I may not be on a proxy server. Is connecting through Earthlink.net connecting to a proxy server? I have not called earthlink back yet as the tech seems to get frustrated with my problem before it can be corrected. Also, it is a minimum 1 hour call each time.

First of all, a router used by hand must have some kind of guide---either a guide fence or a guide bearing on the bit. And a guide bearing is generally mounted on the lower end of the bit----pattern bits sometimes have the bearing above the cutters. Which means you cannot use a bit with a guide bearing on the doors---unless you disassemble them. If the doors are true raised panel construction, that quarter round is part of the profile of the rails and stiles---those are the 'frames' around the panels. So they do not come off. Now, if the doors were done by making a rabbet---that is a stepped cut on the edge of a piece of wood, like the back of a picture frame =---- in the rails and stiles, setting the panels in the holes, and adding quarter round---like window panes used to be installed---then removing that quarter round should be able to be done---but repairing it is kinda difficult without a router table. Replacing it is much easier---if you can match the color/wood type. Third, once the repairs are done, use marine spar varnish as the finish---both sides. Spar varnish will last longer than a hard finish like poly/varnish/etc.

Maybe .. if modem is already a router maybe add a network switch, if its doesnt have plenty of ports, ... & turn the wifi router into an wifi AccessPoint only. or seperate network. Lots of ways to do it ... depends on whats there now.

yes, kids issue....I thihk the router has settings to control different devices but then I need to gather mac addresses for ipods, xboxs wiis, laptops....

I was thinking along the lines of coax cable and a 2 way splitter but for the internet line....no....?

coax splitter wont do what you're thinking.
Your isp would have to allow multiple real ip's.

Think all the routers I have used have a page somewhere showing the MAC of all the connected devices.

Of course in windows open cmd window & type GETMAC maybe. Perhaps you can allow yours on top, and block your local lan range 192.168.0.* (or whatever) for the masses.

The router you have doesn't have any Ethernet ports? If not, you need another router or switch (whatever you can find cheapest) and add it to the mix. That way you can shut off the WiFi at 11 p.m. and still have a wired connection.

While it's not my business how you choose to run your household, I wouldn't be spending money to keep my kids in line. My rules would be pretty simple - first offense, loose the device for a week, second offense loose the device for two weeks, third offense donation to a worthwhile charity. I'm sure there's a family at the local Ronald McDonald House that would appreciate the use of a laptop or Xbox.
