Network and Router Questions

I have the only computer in the house that is connected to a cable modem. All other computers in house share my connection via the Netgear router. We just had to replace the router and got the wireless connection network up and running again. Now the PC in the bedroom is not recognizing the Network. That computer uses Windows Vista Ultimate. What do I need to get that computer hooked up to the network again? There is a cable that runs from the wall jack to the computer and another cable running to the router for the Bedroom computer. Do I need to run a connection wizard of some kind?

Can you clarify a little? It's hard to understand from your description which computer is which. Is the one that's not connecting to the Internet wired or wireless? Do you have more than one computer that isn't connecting to the Internet? Are you saying that the Internet cable coming from a walljack goes directly to a computer without coming from the router?

I will try to clarify the problem. My computer is the one wired to the internet through the cable modem.I refer to this computer as No.1 computer. Wireless computers are two Laptops, both belong to daughter. Laptop 1 is HP and has wireless capability, little Acer laptop2 is daughter's also but her 9 year old son has use of it. Laptop 2 has wireless capability. The computer in bedroom is a desktop2 that is the one not connecting. There was a network cable run through the attic and dropped down to the bedroom and connects to the PC in bedroom.Previously it was connecting via the router that died earlier in the week. My husband and oldest son use the Desktop2 in bedroom.

yes a router provides a hardware firewall in your network, you should also of course have a software firewall setup on your pc, so that is one way that a router can provide added security. If it is a wireless setup then using the strongest security settings on the router is also added protection.

Everything will work like you expect. With possibly the exception of the 2.4ghz keyboard, I dunno. Seems sometimes that can cause problems for some with the router, sometimes not. So it may affect your whole home network. I had a 2.4 cordless phone that worked great with my wifi, but occasionally my connection would get stuck and a reboot of the router would fix it. Only used that phone a couple of months and thats the only time period the router had to be rebooted occasionally. So it more than likely was the problem. Suprised your modem isnt already a router/modem. Might ask comcast if you can buy one from them,, most isp's have special pricing for customers. Usually cheap!

The router you have doesn't have any Ethernet ports? If not, you need another router or switch (whatever you can find cheapest) and add it to the mix. That way you can shut off the WiFi at 11 p.m. and still have a wired connection. While it's not my business how you choose to run your household, I wouldn't be spending money to keep my kids in line. My rules would be pretty simple - first offense, loose the device for a week, second offense loose the device for two weeks, third offense donation to a worthwhile charity. I'm sure there's a family at the local Ronald McDonald House that would appreciate the use of a laptop or Xbox.

Problem is now solved! I had to use the original cable we thought was bad when the router quit working earlier in the week. The original router was almost 2 years old.

Thank goodness you fixed it. I got stuck in the cupboard under the stairs! (biggest grin)
