Old router new computer question

Hello,

I have had my same ISP for 10 years, same Belkin N wireless router for 2 years but I just got a new desktop computer, the old one died. Do I need to reinstall the CD that came with the router or can I just hookup router/modem to the new computer? I seem to recall that the CD really wasn't needed but wanted to check with the experts here. Thanks for any help.

You should be fine plugging it in. Just try it...you can't hurt anything. The only time I recall having to change my settings was when a house guest wanted to hook up a Mac to my wired router, and the other computers in the house were PCs.

if you happen to have the router set up with Mac addresses for each computer that is on the network then you will need to enter the Mac address of the new desktop into the router. That is really the best way to set them up for security so that only the specific Mac addresses you list can connect through your router.

thanks, we live on a busy county lake road which is paved, i believe the lines are buried. i know like i said that on the other side of the road they get cable, and our neighbors who live just east of us get it as well, so we are borderline on it all, although i have to say i don't know of anyone who has cable internet, just the tv service ut i could be wrong. Our provider is just a very small town company who sells computers and internet service, phones and phone service, and DirecTv so it isn't a large company that anyone would recognize the name or anything. My mom only lives 15 miles from me and she gets comcast so i need to check on that. i did check on satellite internet last night and didn't think the speed or price was any better than what i have now, and we have issues here with our satellite signal going out in bad weather even though it says it has 99.9 % strength. I have also checked with alltel and verizon in the past, and although their upload speeds sound impressive, the people i know who have their service hate it and have a lot of outages. So basically i just need to call Monday and see what my options are i guess. I appreciate all the advice and help. I am spending my day today researching routers and trying to figure our which one i should get and i am wondering if the transmission speeds noted on these have anything to do with how it will affect my internet speed. i am so tired of reading reviews and specs and need to just make a decision already because i have already spent way too much time on this, but there definitely does not seem to be one that has all good reviews, i just do not want to get something that will slow me down even worse if there is such a thing.

I'm not clear on whether you have any AOL software installed on your computer or not. If so, that might explain the difference you're seeing. Did you have software installed on your last computer but are you now using the web interface only ? Or have you been using the webmail interface all along ? And, pardon my curiosity... what is it that annoys you about the inclusion of the original message ? Is it the fact that it's there at all ? In that case, you'll have to manually remove the original message each time (see link in last paragraph below) or use a desktop client which can be set NOT to include the original when replying. Or is the annoyance just that the original message is so close to the first line of your reply ? If this is the case, you could do what I do: just hold the "Enter" button down for a few seconds to push the original message down the screen a bit and give you more 'breathing room' for your reply. :-) This answer in their Mail help states that the "include original message with reply" approach is pretty much the only option they give you. (See their "note" at the bottom of that article.) If you don't like it being there, they make you manually remove it. Hey Papillon young man, as DA notes, go for Win 8. Either will confuse the bejabbers out of you for a while so why struggle through 7 only to have to maybe go to 8 later? I fought with 8 because I had 7 and was comfortable. One day I said enough, I still have both machines plus a couple of XP boxes. Do you have the CD for Office 2007? If so you simply install and activate it. Your new confuser may well have a trial version of Office, remove that before loading from your own CD. If by any chance Microsoft cut you off during activation phone them (toll free) and demand to be activated. I recently had such a situation when reloading Windows 7 after rebuilding the computer. They have no concept of innocent until proven guilty sadly. Which ever one you buy will come with a program called 'Windows Easy Transfer' or similar. This will transfer all your data from the old machine to the new one (it will not remove the data from the old computer never fear).

zep et. al.: Sorry I didn't get back sooner but with my limited experience, I was a little leary of doing the uninstall of network adapter. However I finally realized that at worst it would only mess up the laptop and not the other devices that are connected and working on the secured network. So: I just uninstalled and rebooted. The adapter did reinstall but I am still not getting a proper connection although things have slightly changed. The secured network got connected, but did not even ask for the security password and simply went to 'validating identity' and simply hung. It didn't even time out. I checked firefox to see if it was expecting a password there, as was the initial case to get connected to the Guest Network (where I am again now), but it couldn't find the server. You may recall, that previously the issue was that the secured net would ask for the password, but find it unacceptable and give 'limited or no connectivity. Is there a way to force the network to ask for the password?? Any other ideas? Eventually, I will probably find a way to get a knowledgeable person out to my house where they could diagnose this. FYI, I am creating another post about security updates that may tangentially be connected to this thread. I apparently successfully installed sp3 but 'security update' keeps wanting to install it AGAIN! I was worried I might not be able to shut down to reload the adapter, but I was able to cancel the update.

Kudzu9... Thanks for the response. I tried what you said, just plugging it in. I have Vista and a screen came up asking about a network something. It had a choice of Home...Office... or a place like Starbucks. I clicked on home, then tried getting on the internet. wouldn't connect but all lights on DSL Modem and Belkin Router were lit up including the Internet light. I unhooked router and went back to using my modem, still wouldn't connect to Internet. I rebooted (without router in use) and now I'm back to normal. Should I have rebooted after I hooked up the Belkin router? P.S. There are no Macs involved.

Mac address has nothing at all to do with Mac computers.
Media Access Control address (MAC address)
The computers you use each have an individual Mac address assigned to them it is unique and identifies them, so do not be confused by the term Mac address, I am talking about your computers.

This is what I am talking about when I say to use Mac Address entries(Mac address filtering) in your router for your network to keep it safer.

ravencajun... Thank you so much for the info you posted. After reading it, it makes sense that with each new computer I use this router with, I have to configure it. And here I thought I was just configuring the router with the ISP info. Excuse my little knowledge of computers. Now... If I can just find the CD.

I finally found the Set-Up Assistant CD for the Belkin router. I installed and it had the same name of what I named the router back when I had XP. Towards the end of installation, Belkin was trying to connect to the Internet and it couldn't, providing me with a knowledge base of questions and answers and a Belkin Support phone #. However, I noticed my Vista laptop in the other room was able to connect with a perfect signal. I called Belkin, got a man who I couldn't understand, I tried, through, but when he was wanting to start exploring my computer I declined. I called my ISP and they wanted to charge me $69 because it was a router they didn't support. In the past, whenever my computer wasn't acting right I've always rebooted. Well, I rebooted this time and now everything is working perfectly. I think I'm going to email Belkin and let them know that this may help alot of people, a simple reboot after installation.
