wireless router question

I recently took the plunge and went wireless with a Netgear WGR614V10 router. A Verizon DSL tech helped me with the installation. I used WPA2 for security.

I have 2 desktops and a laptop - the desktops are wired to the router. I'm the only user and am puzzled by what occured last night when I put my desktop to sleep. Before I left the room it began to run again. Once more I set it to sleep with it immediately starting up again. This time I shut it down, but the #1 on my router turned amber after the shut down. This happened about 1 1/2 weeks ago, and I turned off the router until I needed to use my computer. After a few days of doing this, I left my router on with no further incidents until last night. (Normally, when I put my pc to sleep, no numbers are lit.) I turned my router off because I feared someone had broken into my connection.

I called DSL support, but they said no one could possibility be piggybacking my connection. Do you have any idea why the #1 turned amber??? I have Vista Home PRemium and use Avira and ZA. I scanned with Avira, MBAM, and Superantispyware and use SpywareBlaster... Is it OK to keep my router on?

go to Start: > Settings > Control Panel > System > "Device Manager" tab

Find your network adapter(s), right click and select "Properties". In the "Power Management" tab, uncheck "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby".

I followed your instructions and found that option is already unchecked, zep. The only option checked is to "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Any other thoughts??? Thanks for your help.

This is one of those situations where there is a lot of compatibility of equipment even when they use different standards. Basically, here are the main things to know: 1) You need one, and only one, wireless router. An N router is probably the best choice for you, and would typically be backwards compatible with older technologies. It will handle your computer connections, printer connections, and other wireless systems, if you have any, like game players, or streaming video boxes like Roku players. 2) If you want the old Dell to connect wirelessly, it would likely need to have a wireless card added to one of the slots...not very expensive. Or you could continue to have it connected with an Ethernet cable to the new router. 3) You will need one computer hooked up by Ethernet cable to the new router to set up your system. Then it can be disconnected and used wirelessly afterwards if you want. 4) Your printer should be compatible with your router, and that varies among printers. If you have an N router, it would also likely interface fine with a b/g standard as well as N printer.

Do you know the brand name of the router and model # in case we need it. If he had the router set up in his home the router should have retained the settings that he had. Unplugging it does not cause these settings to be lost. So go ahead a connect it. Also, can my aunt somehow still have her own laptop connected to the modem by the cable (i.e. "wired") while the other laptop outside uses the wireless router ? Yes that's how I do it here. Remember her connection will come from the router port, right now I would think she is connected directly to the Modem. You will need 1 cable to connect the Modem to the router any Ethernet cable will do.You will pull her cable out of the modem and plug it into 1 of the available router ports. You may have to go through a power down sequence of the modem an router, then verify she can connect by going to www.Google.com. Then see if he can connect too on the wireless signal.

We recently finished our basement and made it into both a family room/playroom and an office down there for dh, who works full time from home. We had room for a closet under the basement steps, so we wired the closet with a full out network panel, cable, phone, etc then we hardwired network jacks throughout the basement. Now the modem/router/printer/fax sit in the closet and all the PC's (hubby has several, plus the kids have them in the playroom and oh yeah, our Tivo is hooked up to the network as well) are hardwired to network jacks throughout the basement. Any pc's we need upstairs (my laptop for instance) can print or access the network via wireless. It's not a practical solution if you're working with an existing room (I LOVE allison's - that's brilliant!!!) but if you're remodeling or installing wiring, the "command center closet" is definitely the way to go.

I have used a few Asus wifi routers... current one given to me is RT-AC87U.. = about AC2350 I think. All are about same for the basic pages for setup. Automatic setup usually have about three choices. Pretty self explanatory. Asus is famous for lots of configuration options, quite a bit more so than most other consumer routers. Netgear Nitehawks are highly rated by the geeky sites and apparently pretty good stuff. Very Popular. Linksys has kind of fallen from being on top of the popularity lists but still is good middle ground solid reliable stuff. Computers, phones , everything wi-fi should just automatically connect to any router - provided you know the wifi passphrase and name of your router connection.. Network cabled stuff should just work. You kind of puzzle me with your choices though... those numbers denote different wifi connection speed classes. AC1200 up to AC2600. If you use networking or router attached storage, the bigger numbers are faster - for Transferring data or files between devices or if multiple devices too.

You need to disable the "Wake on Lan" in the system bios.

Not sure what's going on yet. I'm only wondering why the computer is waking up from sleep mode. I can offer this, I don't use sleep modes or any other modes like that because those modes have always been problematic.

My next approach would be to Google Netgear WGR614V10 router wakes up vista and see if others have had the issue and any solution is offered. I'll be doing some checking and we can see what others may offer as well.

do you have any antivirus programs that would be doing a scan and may be accessing new updates prior to scanning? I would check for any scheduled tasks.

Terry, I looked around in bios - entered several places but never found "Wake on Lan..." It's a little scary in there! :)

RC, I checked for scheduled tasks and found nothing listed that named any software on my computer. I wasn't that concerned about Vista waking up as I was that someone had broken through my security. It doesn't sound like anyone thinks that has happened, so I'm greatly relieved. Thank you.

Zep, my computer automatically goes to sleep if I don't do it manually. I never know the best procedure to follow - shut the pc down or keep it on all the time!

Not all BIOS will have a straight-up Wake-on-LAN option, so try and find the PnP hardware settings and disable Wake-on-LAN (it may be in a different category depending on your BIOS).

By the way this would be disabled by default or should be.

Don't forget to save changes and exit the bios, if you don't save changes all returns to the way it was.

Might try moving the ethernet connector to another port on the router, skip a port, anotherwords; leave an empty port between the ethernets. Side by side they share part of the physical connection.

I seriously doubt anyone is sending the 'magic packet' wake up command for any Wake On Lan configurations.

Lots of programs regularly check for updates, usually in the wee hours of the morning, and if you feel secure with your anti-virus and malware scans I wouldn't worry much.

What you could do is turn off the second computer and see if the problem replicates. If that doesn't do it, turn off your router. Usually if a program tries to update and can't it generates an error. That may give you some clue as to what's going on.
