Need help- wireless router/ pcmci card?/encryption

Hi,

I did several searches to see if I could find the answer to this question. I've gotten the answer here before and I thought I'd saved it, but now can't find it.

Last year I gave daughter and son-in-law a wireless router. They've got a very old pc with XP home and an old laptop with xp home. Laptop does not have built in wireless, but does have a PC/MCI slot. Router came with a PC/MCI card. I got it set up for them, with encryption set up, based on advice from here. It involved entering a port id(?) in the browser address bar - numbers like 800.1.1.0, or something like that, and then entering the encryption numbers on first the PC, and then the laptop. At least I think that's what I did. Memory isn't so good. Daughter's PC/MCI card died (no internet access and no light on the card any longer). I had another card here at the house, so I put the card in her laptop. I did this here at my house, where I have no encryption (far away from other houses, road, etc) set up, and her laptop could access the internet using my connection. But at her house she can't, because of the set up encryption.

So my question is - How do I access the encryption on the PC to either get the current key, or to change it, and then how do I set up the laptop?

Sorry for the long spiel before the question.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm supposed to go over there tomorrow to help her.

some of the routers use different
if those whont werk, tell us the make of the router and someone probably will give you the access ip

that is unless you changed the router ip to a bit odd so your neighbor doesnt just stumble in with a popular ip.

It's either a Linksys or a D-Link, and I don't know how to change the router IP so hopefully one of those two will work.

This is one of those situations where there is a lot of compatibility of equipment even when they use different standards. Basically, here are the main things to know: 1) You need one, and only one, wireless router. An N router is probably the best choice for you, and would typically be backwards compatible with older technologies. It will handle your computer connections, printer connections, and other wireless systems, if you have any, like game players, or streaming video boxes like Roku players. 2) If you want the old Dell to connect wirelessly, it would likely need to have a wireless card added to one of the slots...not very expensive. Or you could continue to have it connected with an Ethernet cable to the new router. 3) You will need one computer hooked up by Ethernet cable to the new router to set up your system. Then it can be disconnected and used wirelessly afterwards if you want. 4) Your printer should be compatible with your router, and that varies among printers. If you have an N router, it would also likely interface fine with a b/g standard as well as N printer.

This is what he got me - from the box: SMC Networks Wireless Cardbus Adapter "Supports blazing wireless communcation at up to 108 MBPS." Advanced Wireles Security, includes Wi-Fi Protected Access. For Home and Small Office Networking. "Share your existing cable connection with multiple computers by addind a high performance Barriade g Router with USB Print server" Don't know about the last part, I could live without the print server, I just want to be able to work and browse in other rooms in the house besides my basement where the cable connection is. As for the memory card - I went to the "Crucial" RAM Scanner Web site as recommended by Zep516 on a previous post that I found through the search menu. The desktop probably has a wired network card that is currently connected to the DSL Modem (GT701). Disconnect that. The GT701 hooks up to the phone line. The TEW-633GR connects to the GT701 by a network cable. Connect the WAN port on the TEW-633GR to the connection on the GT701 where the desktop used to connect. Connect the desktop to one of the LAN ports on the TEW-633GR. There should be some sort of setup for the TEW-633GR. I don't know the exact steps you'll need to take, but there's probably a setup routine in the manual you can follow. I would suggest that you do the following: Change the SSID on the TEW-633GR Change the admin password on the TEW-633GR (and make a note of it) Set up the TEW-633GR to use encryption, preferably WPA set up the wireless on the laptop to use the same WPA settings as the TEW-633GR I've done this a lot, so some of these things seem simple to me and I've probably skipped steps. I think my wireless is secure. It's the WEP encryption. Everytime it's detected something I would get a popup on my screen. I do think I'm pretty secure here. I'm in the middle of the woods about 300' from the nearest dirt road. Raven, I got it in black. It's a nice little machine so far. The sound isn't great but I didn't expect it to be. My son just turned it on and I had to turn the wireless card on again and type in my key. I'm not sure why. I'll have to figure that out. BTW I got it off of Ebay and used Live.com and got 25% cash back on it. It was a great deal. Tracey

Hi Mikie,

I sure hope you or someone else knowledgable is around.

I'm at my daughter's house. I entered the address (numbers from above) in the address bar on the PC and went through the set up and then re-booted the PC and re-brought up the browser.

On the laptop, when I click on the wirless connections icon on the tool bar it shoulw the network is available. It also shows some others. It says the network requires a network key (WEP) and I entered the same one as I'd entered on the PC, and click connect and the box disappears. But when I bring up internet explorer, it says no connection.

No matter what I do, and I've tried a bunch of things, I still get no connection on the browser on the PC.

Please Help!!

I'm awfully tired. Its hard for me to follow what you are saying.
We have a Router.
We have a Laptop PC.
We have a Desktop PC

And the Laptop WEP key matches the Router WEP security key ? Yet the laptop browser does not work?

Did you try a ping or traceRt from a CMD window to see if the Laptop is capable of getting out to the internet ?

is my favorite check.

IE Tools / Internet Options / Connections / Lan Settings(button) Try with all those items in the Lan Settings window unchecked.

And the Desktop PC is also a wireless connection to the Router? and that desktop browser does work ?
