Need help- wireless router/ pcmci card?/encryption

Hi,

I did several searches to see if I could find the answer to this question. I've gotten the answer here before and I thought I'd saved it, but now can't find it.

Last year I gave daughter and son-in-law a wireless router. They've got a very old pc with XP home and an old laptop with xp home. Laptop does not have built in wireless, but does have a PC/MCI slot. Router came with a PC/MCI card. I got it set up for them, with encryption set up, based on advice from here. It involved entering a port id(?) in the browser address bar - numbers like 800.1.1.0, or something like that, and then entering the encryption numbers on first the PC, and then the laptop. At least I think that's what I did. Memory isn't so good. Daughter's PC/MCI card died (no internet access and no light on the card any longer). I had another card here at the house, so I put the card in her laptop. I did this here at my house, where I have no encryption (far away from other houses, road, etc) set up, and her laptop could access the internet using my connection. But at her house she can't, because of the set up encryption.

So my question is - How do I access the encryption on the PC to either get the current key, or to change it, and then how do I set up the laptop?

Sorry for the long spiel before the question.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm supposed to go over there tomorrow to help her.

some of the routers use different
if those whont werk, tell us the make of the router and someone probably will give you the access ip

that is unless you changed the router ip to a bit odd so your neighbor doesnt just stumble in with a popular ip.

Thanks Mikie,

It's either a Linksys or a D-Link, and I don't know how to change the router IP so hopefully one of those two will work.

I definitely would not get the celeron processor. Go for a better rated processor. I am an AMD fan prefer them over Intel but everyone has their own preferences. on the router make sure you change the default user name and password to the router itself and give your wireless network a very strong number/letter mix passphrase or use one generated by the router if it will do that (write it on a card and tape it to the bottom of the router not blocking any vents). Be sure also that you have enabled WPA2 encryption in the router setup so that your wireless is safe from those passing by or near you that could other wise jump onto your network. My router is a linksys G router and I have a 4000sqft house, I can use my laptops anywhere and get an excellent rated signal, I can go out in my yard and get the same, my neighbor can see my network from his house and he shows it as a strong signal, of course mine is locked down so he can not get on it as is his, I see his from my house which has 2 bars.

well, you need to access the linksys router and look in its wifi pages might try ; http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.254 or maybe change the .1. to .0.

Snidely, you are new around here?? The regular volunteers on this forum have helped me over the years, so many times, I can't begin to count. This is what he got me - from the box: SMC Networks Wireless Cardbus Adapter "Supports blazing wireless communcation at up to 108 MBPS." Advanced Wireles Security, includes Wi-Fi Protected Access. "Share your existing cable connection with multiple computers by addind a high performance Barriade g Router with USB Print server" Don't know about the last part, I could live without the print server, I just want to be able to work and browse in other rooms in the house besides my basement where the cable connection is. As for the memory card - I went to the "Crucial" RAM Scanner Web site as recommended by Zep516 on a previous post that I found through the search menu. Hi Mikie,

I sure hope you or someone else knowledgable is around.

I'm at my daughter's house. I entered the address (numbers from above) in the address bar on the PC and went through the set up and then re-booted the PC and re-brought up the browser.

On the laptop, when I click on the wirless connections icon on the tool bar it shoulw the network is available. It also shows some others. It says the network requires a network key (WEP) and I entered the same one as I'd entered on the PC, and click connect and the box disappears. But when I bring up internet explorer, it says no connection.

No matter what I do, and I've tried a bunch of things, I still get no connection on the browser on the PC.

Please Help!!

I'm awfully tired. Its hard for me to follow what you are saying.
We have a Router.
We have a Laptop PC.
We have a Desktop PC

And the Laptop WEP key matches the Router WEP security key ? Yet the laptop browser does not work?

Did you try a ping or traceRt from a CMD window to see if the Laptop is capable of getting out to the internet ?
traceRt www.yahoo.com
is my favorite check.

IE Tools / Internet Options / Connections / Lan Settings(button) Try with all those items in the Lan Settings window unchecked.

And the Desktop PC is also a wireless connection to the Router? and that desktop browser does work ?
