Need help on choosing Wireless card for desktop

Yes, I am confused. My desktop has never had wireless capabilities...at least I don't think so. In Control Panel, I have a wireless setup wizard, but I assume that is if I had a wireless card installed. I would like to make my computer wireless ready and have no clue what to buy. I will be running off my son's router, who lives next door. He is connected by satellite. His router is of the N type. Do I need to match this type or will just a wired card of the 802.11? type be enough. My grandson can install it if that is what I need.

I don't really need to be confined to this router in case he moves or changes brands, etc; Oh, I know the signal is good enough here to run wireless because my laptop does great, with a "very good" signal.

Think I'd get a N card,,so it doenst slow down my sons network and n has better range supposedly,,, or better yet a usb n wifi dongle so you can put it on a cord and move it around a bit for best signal.

dbags- Just to be clear for you: 1. Right now your DSL goes from the wall to the DSL modem to your computer. 2. You will now modify the system by unplugging the cat5 cable from the back of your computer, and plugging it into the Linksys router; then you have a second cat5 cable that will go from the Linksys to the back of the existing computer. All you're doing is inserting the Linksys router so that it can take the signal from the DSL modem and split it up to more than one computer. All this should be very clearly described in the Linksys instructions, including the step-by-step sequence of installing the new router software and making the physical conections. Once this is completed, you will have the capability to connect up several more computers with cat5 cable and/or several wirelessly as well.

it might have affected the picture you are using for your wallpaper try choosing a new wallpaper and see if that square goes away. also check your wallpaper settings to see how it is set to portray your wallpaper. It is better to get an actual wallpaper that is sized for your monitor resolution, this site will automatically determine your proper size, once you select a wallpaper click on it to go to the download page there you will see where it says your resolution is and has the number, for example mine is 1280x1024 where you see that click on that number and it will automatically size it for your screen then right click on the sized image and save it to your pc, then go to your wallpaper area and browse to that saved file and select it as your wallpaper. Hi Mikie, I sure hope you or someone else knowledgable is around. I'm at my daughter's house. I entered the address (numbers from above) in the address bar on the PC and went through the set up and then re-booted the PC and re-brought up the browser. On the laptop, when I click on the wirless connections icon on the tool bar it shoulw the network is available. It also shows some others. It says the network requires a network key (WEP) and I entered the same one as I'd entered on the PC, and click connect and the box disappears. But when I bring up internet explorer, it says no connection. No matter what I do, and I've tried a bunch of things, I still get no connection on the browser on the PC. Please Help!! Thanks, Alice

The desktop probably has a wired network card that is currently connected to the DSL Modem (GT701). Disconnect that. The GT701 hooks up to the phone line. The TEW-633GR connects to the GT701 by a network cable. Connect the WAN port on the TEW-633GR to the connection on the GT701 where the desktop used to connect. Connect the desktop to one of the LAN ports on the TEW-633GR. There should be some sort of setup for the TEW-633GR. I don't know the exact steps you'll need to take, but there's probably a setup routine in the manual you can follow. I would suggest that you do the following: Change the SSID on the TEW-633GR Change the admin password on the TEW-633GR (and make a note of it) Set up the TEW-633GR to use encryption, preferably WPA set up the wireless on the laptop to use the same WPA settings as the TEW-633GR I've done this a lot, so some of these things seem simple to me and I've probably skipped steps. If you don't have it in the pc then the usb dongle would be an easier way to go. Here is a link to a search on newegg for usb wireless N there you can see various options, of course there are some other things that turn up in the search but focus on the usb wireless dongles, you definitely want usb 2.0 and you want to make sure it does all types of security including WPA2 so you can set up your system securely.
As you will see some have antennas some just look like a usb thumb drive.

If you wish to find out exactly what is in your pc I would go get the free tool belarc and let it scan your pc it will tell you everything.

Thanks for all the suggestions... I have been all over these websites and links that were mentioned, but I can't say I'm ready to buy yet. I read a lot of reviews and most seemed to be against the usb adapter. Many complained of dropped connections after 2 or 3 minutes. Right now, I'm leaning toward the Netgear N Card because it matches my son's router that I will be using. Do any of you have any experience with this card? I did find out that I have no card already installed. Thanks for the Belarc link. I have used it before on another computer, but had forgotten about it.

If his router is a Netgear, it might be advisable to buy the same brand card for your computer. I have read that this does sometimes make for better connections.
