Messed up my desktop...need help

I just now tried to add a shortcut to my desktop and ended up with a white square in the left hand corner...for the life of me, I can't get rid of it. I tried a system restore, but the restore option had been turned of...maybe during an update. Could someplease help?

What operating system?

Can you turn System Restore back on. You need to that first.

When you right click the Icon to delete it, what is the exact error message. Remember that's just a short cut the real program lives in the Program files folder.

XP Professional...sorry I forgot that....I turned system restore back on...I get no error message....I get this white square up in the left hand corner...the shortcut isn't the problem...it's this big white square underneath the first six of them

I would replace topsoil and peat moss with pine bark fines making it 3 parts pine bark fines 2 parts compost and manure. If you can find a 4 cu. ft. bag of perlite buy it and go with 1/2 part perlite in that mix. Don't be frugal with the perlite. That should fluff everything up nicely. IME tomatoes are the most finicky of plants to grow right in containers. You'll probably need to add some lime and other black magic to keep them from getting blossom end rot and then outright dying on you. Skip 5 gallon buckets for tomatoes. Other plants like cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, etc. are much easier to grow right than tomatoes. Read some threads on where to get and what pine bark fines are.

I really screwed up. I used a stainless cleaner on my Rohl faucet with a tuscan bronze finish. There were water marks on it and after rubbing it on, it took the finish down to the brass. Really stupid, and looks really obvious now. Do you know of any products that I could rub on the the faucet to somewhat mask the mark? What products do you use to get that oil rubbed bronze finish on metal. Of couse, it will be in a wet environment. I am really sick because it was an expensive faucet and was installed less than a year ago. I will call Rohl tomorrow for suggestions, but they don't warranty that finish. (probably for that exact reason) Any suggestions besides a light whipping?!

We did that kit last year and tried glazing two doors and just did not like the result. We ended up letting it dry, de-gloss again and repainted and only applied the color and the finishing product. We didnt really try to remove it another way (dont think you could). We loved the product but I would not want to try to ensure that all 19 doors somewhat matched...

it might have affected the picture you are using for your wallpaper try choosing a new wallpaper and see if that square goes away. also check your wallpaper settings to see how it is set to portray your wallpaper. It is better to get an actual wallpaper that is sized for your monitor resolution, this site will automatically determine your proper size, once you select a wallpaper click on it to go to the download page there you will see where it says your resolution is and has the number, for example mine is 1280x1024 where you see that click on that number and it will automatically size it for your screen then right click on the sized image and save it to your pc, then go to your wallpaper area and browse to that saved file and select it as your wallpaper. That way we can see just what is happening.

I figured it out...had to go through a panic period first....

It was a setting on customizing the desktop

At least I found out system restore was turned off...so that is back on again

As you had not knowingly turned off the system restore you might consider running a full scan with Malwarebytes or similar. One never knows these days and running a scan can offer peace of mind.

I agree with owbist several of the infections do turn off system restore upon infection so update your malwarebytes and run a full scan.

I scanned yesterday with Microsoft Security Essentials and just now with Malwarebytes and they both came up clean...
