Need help to set up wireless network

I consider myself "wireless-challenged" and need help in setting up a wireless network for home with a recently-purchased Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop.

We have a Dell desktop PC (Dimention 3000) purchased 3 years ago with high-speed Internet through a Qwest DSL modem, model GT701.

In addition to the new laptop, we purchased a TrendNet router, model TEW-633GR, and a Logitech VX Revolution cordless laser mouse.

Our projected useage is to keep the desktop/modem and router in our home office downstairs and use the laptop upstairs or occasionally outside the home. No other computers are envisioned.

Questions:

1) In what specific sequence should these items be set up? What connects to what?

2) Is it advisable to keep the desktop wired as it is now and just have the laptop wireless?

I probably have many more questions to ask, but am so lost that I don't even know what questions to ask.

The desktop probably has a wired network card that is currently connected to the DSL Modem (GT701). Disconnect that.

The GT701 hooks up to the phone line. The TEW-633GR connects to the GT701 by a network cable. Connect the WAN port on the TEW-633GR to the connection on the GT701 where the desktop used to connect.

Connect the desktop to one of the LAN ports on the TEW-633GR.

There should be some sort of setup for the TEW-633GR. I don't know the exact steps you'll need to take, but there's probably a setup routine in the manual you can follow.

I would suggest that you do the following:
- Change the SSID on the TEW-633GR
- Change the admin password on the TEW-633GR (and make a note of it)
- Set up the TEW-633GR to use encryption, preferably WPA
- set up the wireless on the laptop to use the same WPA settings as the TEW-633GR
I've done this a lot, so some of these things seem simple to me and I've probably skipped steps. If you need more details, post back here and let us know.

That is what I've already done. It's what I mean when I said I didn't find any help from help and support. I try to get this fixed, get frustrated and shut down. When I try again, I've forgotten what I've done, so I do it again. I've done all those steps many times. I'm surprised that getting a router to work, setting up the home network, has been so difficult. Many pages of instructions printed out, many hand written, which is difficult for me. Have laptop accessing internet, which is good. Am just trying to share the printer that is plugged into home computer with XP. If this is not possible, I wish someone would tell me and I can go on to something else. I have no formal training on computers. Still a lot I see on here that I have no idea what is it, what it does, but I can read it. Like reading the "services" in control panel. I've been trying to get this to work for several weeks. I just noticed in sharing and network, that it only shows the laptop(Vista) router and internet. Then I hit "map network" and did not get the home (XP) computer to show. Have used or performed all steps shown in Vista to get this to work and it does not. HP website states that my old psc 950 driver is already installed onto Vista. I don't know what to do next. Great news! so simple when you know what to look for. I have posted the instructions in case another user has a similar issue. Windows 7 and Vista From the Start menu, select Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel.Double-click Network and Sharing Center. From the list of tasks on the left, click Change adapter settings (in Windows 7), or Manage network connections (in Vista). For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties. For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties. From the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK. some links for reference Sharing your printer wirelessly Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP this is what got mine working properly, I found the info on the windows 7 forums (Jimbo45) after I did this it worked great. Just be sure to put the name of your actual machines and names in there rather than what he is using as an example. "to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of Windows 7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well). ("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW). assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE. 1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER. 2) On the Network Browsing on your Windows 7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share. Now on the Windows 7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64). 3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the Windows 7 machine into thinking it's running the printer. 4) Create NEW port==>Local port 5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER 6) Now Windows 7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine. Simple (For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port and at 5) enter the IP address. yes, youve gotten some good advice here, but i will add my two cents as well. you may have a modem, which does not give off a wifi signal, or you may already have a router, which gives off a wifi signal. if its a router and your isp gave it to you, then check out how to set it up to give a signal, or it may be already. if you have a modem that doesnt give a signal, you will have to get a router and attach it to the modem. theres a plug in on modems, LAN ports, a sort of phone cord looking thing, only bigger and burlier. theres a special, but common, cord that will fit into that plug in on the modem. then you could try to pick up a cheap router....connect them with the "ethernet cord" and should be good to go, with hopefully not too much fuss to set the signal name and security you want. heres some small simple ones that i have sort of had my eye on for a while --->> mini router on amazon another mini router --> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E98O7GC for a full blown real router, i would recommend this one, i have one and love it ---> asus rt - n12 these are all on the low end of prices for routers, most are more like 30-60...just make sure it has the "ethernet port", the phone like plug in spot for the cable. most of them do, but some of these mini ones are just "repeaters" or "access points" and so grab a wifi signal and repeat it, no ethernet cable. but all standard routers have the ethernet plug in. plus you will need the cable. also the quickest, easiest way to go, especially if its not a long visit, is to just unplug the ethernet cable from your computer, and let her plug it into her laptop. unless she has like...a tablet or something, ethernet plug ins are part of standard laptops.

Question re cables. I think I need to go out and get another cable to connect the router to the modem. What category should I get? My existing modem/desktop cable is category 5, but they now have 5e, 6 and 6a, without much difference in price. Should I get the highest level I can find? I may not need the capability right now, but maybe in the future?? Would there be incompatibility issues with going to, say, 6 or 6a? Recommendations?

Cat5 should be good enough, but if there's not much difference in price, I'd get the highest number.

bpgreen: With your help, the setup went very smoothly. One "minor" glitch at the end that I couldn't figure out, so I called Dell Tech Support. Turned out I needed to turn on the wireless switch on the laptop. Talk about feeling like an absolute idiot. Anyway, thanks again for all your help!
