Normally you can use your existing network cable that I assume is already connected between your ?ATT? broadband? Modem.

Do you have DSL or Cable internet connection and how do you now hook your computer up to it ?

You don't need a wireless card for your desktop. Unplug your internet connection from the back of your PC and plug it into the marked internet connection at the back of the router and then plug the cat5 cable that came with the router into one of the empty ports in the back of the router and connect it to your PC where the internet connection was connected. All this is assuming you are not on a high speed connection (not dial-up)or nothing will work. Take time to run the software in the laptop to secure your network or anybody with a wireless laptop near your connection will be able to use your connection.

Just to be clear for you:

1. Right now your DSL goes from the wall to the DSL modem to your computer.

2. You will now modify the system by unplugging the cat5 cable from the back of your computer, and plugging it into the Linksys router; then you have a second cat5 cable that will go from the Linksys to the back of the existing computer.

All you're doing is inserting the Linksys router so that it can take the signal from the DSL modem and split it up to more than one computer. All this should be very clearly described in the Linksys instructions, including the step-by-step sequence of installing the new router software and making the physical conections.

Once this is completed, you will have the capability to connect up several more computers with cat5 cable and/or several wirelessly as well.

thanks for all the help everyone...i finally got it up and running..just needed an extra cat5 cable. the problem was ..the original inline into the modem was an ordinary telephone line,and could not make a connection to the router with it....borrowed a cat5 from an old aol modem i had lying around and the rest was easy....thanks again all

I too have a question. I am about to go out and purchase a link system wireless router for home. Which is best wireless G or N? I have a built-in wireless card on my laptop. Do I need to purchase the external adapter/booster?

Sounds like you just need a wireless router if your laptop has it already built in.

The wireless N specification that will be approved for use isn't finalized yet, but if you already have N built in your laptop some of its features may work but unless both router and laptop wifi equipment is the same name brand its unlikely all of the router optional features will talk with the notebook. And visa versa. But it will work fine with G regardless.

If I were to go buy a router I'd probably get an N unless the price was significantly higher than the same G router.
