How can I tell which one I have now? I'm thinking the one I have now is older anyway...since it doesn't have that icon to call someone's computer behind each members name. Since I don't know which one it is that I need, I don't want to download what I already have.

In the upper right hand corner of the main Messenger window, click on HELP. Then click ABOUT YAHOO MESSENGER, you will find the version number there.

Mercyfulgoodness yes. Dell always helps me reformat when I get things fpuled up up beyond all recognition. I'm so glad to have the extended warranty. It has baled me out so many times.

Yes, I got AVG free first and updates, then Windows updates, Firefox, printer installed, Wordperfect, and other things as I find I need them.

Another question...Do I need something like Zone Alarm, if I have it in the Windows Service pack already?

Yes, you should have a firewall other than the MS firewall. Both Zone Alarm and Comodo firewalls are good. Download whichever one you want, and then before installing, disable the MS firewall. Don't want them clashing with each other.

Might want to hold off on loading an optional firewall untill you get your high speed connection figured out. Firewalls can sometimes add a level of difficulties with connections.

Something like 'Windows Defender' along with your AVG virus program will supplement windows firewall till then.

I'm trying Yahoo 8.1.0.402 and it is taking about 50 minutes and I'm not even sure it is the right one. I'll keep trying until I find the right one. 84% now.

I won't even go try the highspeed anymore...until I get it fixed. This dial up (with the phone line being good at the time) and an accelerator isn't half bad...considering all the ISP problems I've had off and on all year it seems.

Mikie's suggestion is a good one.

Go ahead and download one of the free firewalls recommended, but hold off on installing. I'm assuming you download to a special folder or to your desktop.
When you are ready to install ZA or Comodo, go to Control Panel and open Security Center. Scroll down to "Manage Security Settings. . ." and click on Windows Firewall. There you can turn it off (not recommended by MS). Then install the other firewall that you downloaded. Once you do that, then the Security Center will show that you have a firewall enabled.

I thought I'd go check that out now. I don't see Security Center in the Control Panel under either Classic or Category view. What now? I have XP.

I also know that the Yahoo IM I just downloaded is not the one I was looking for.

Don't know. I have XP also, and it is the last icon in the category view, directly under "Accessibility Options". Under classic view do you have Windows Firewall? If so, click on that and you can disable the Windows Firewall that way.
