Agreed.

Glass or acrylic-enclosed showers are the way to go for looks or resale.

Big mistake not to put a bath in the master.

I think most fiberglass walls do not look as nice as tile BUT the fiberglass is going to be easier to keep clean without the grout lines.

If the shower walls are really an element in the design, I would definately go with tile.

You could always do solid surface, granite, real marble, etc. or cultured marble. All you then have lines to keep clean is corners and where it meets the shower base.

I've only seen one fiberglass surround that looked nice, however it was very expensive. We did white on white cultured marble and it is so easy to keep clean. Would be even easier if we didn't have hard water.

I would do a tiled shower. It doesn't have to be an expensive tile. I used Daltile subways in one shower, they are very inexpensive, and they look great. Also, most the fiberglass showers I've seen seem tiny. I'd do the largest shower you can fit (well, within reason), at least 42x60. If you show your plan I'm sure someone will help you design the space. Sometimes having someone else look at the plan opens up an idea you didn't think of. I was stuck on my master bath until my father took a look and he immediately came up with a solution I'd missed.

Do glass or tile, but definitely not something etched - cheesy. Frosted or basic tile will look classy & be worth it, I think.

I think calling etched glass 'cheesy' is in itself rather tasteless.

I see nothing 'cheesy' about the picture Worthy posted, but I love a touch of Deco...

There are many options but I need more info to actually suggest something.

I think there are two main elements to consider -- as well as being aware of your taste in styles.

First, the shower walls should be congenial to the remainder of the room... if you have tile elsewhere, tiles in the same colors if not the same size, will look 'meant' as a continuation of the room's walls. Tiles, of course, do mean grout, which can be a PIA to care for. The difficulty with fibreglass is that neither texture nor color will be easily matched, so that often it simply 'doesn't fit' which is another way of saying it doesn't look like it belongs as part of the room. Fibreglas also presents the problem of being well-supported [which it often isn't] and coming only in standard sizes which may not be to your comfort. Cultured marble, if it is the same as nearby cultured marble countertops, seems to look both stylish and luxurious. CM seems to come in quite a wide price range, from very competitive to tiles, to whew-pass-the-platinum- card.

The other issue is the door or curtain, which again should be a part of the total decor. And it really should be considered decor more than necessity. The art deco example may not be to everyone's taste (nothing ever is), but it IS an excellent example of functional decor.

As far as size goes, everybody has different comfort zones. I prefer just enough space to put arms akimbo and be able to turn around without smacking an elbow (about 45"x45"). DH, possibly due to his height, doesn't care much about the width but wants 55"-60" from the showerhead which he sets at a much wider (higher?) angle than I. And that might be part of your key to determining size... figure out the showerhead's distribution and determine the best depth and width for your usage.

To be honest, I also consider cleaning -- which, as a daily chore (since I'm not among the maid-havers), is not a negligible issue. Every time someone mentions a 5'x7' shower, I think "there is no way I want to spend time cleaning an area bigger than many closets *every* day!" YMMV
