would you mind helping me w/lighting for master bath? (xpost)

i always like to run things by everyone here so i hope you don't mind. i am having hammershell tiles made for my master bath by a supplier in the philippines. he called and left a message while i was away saying my order will be completed the end of the week (she types while trying to contain her excitement!). the tile will be 20x20mm squares of champagne colored natural hammershell (no joints). i'm planning on running it up the entire backsplash (10' across with a 9' ceiling) and also a large panel inside the shower with two smaller panels to each side of the doors to the bath.

i envision some sort of crystal chandelier but not sure about the scones. thinking maybe a tall, lean fixture with a shade. don't know; i'm stuck. so if you have any ideas about lighting PLEASE let me know.

below are pics of my materials as well as inspiration pics. floor will be black walnut. thanks for any advice!

this is the cabinet makers drawing of the vanity (which will be stained, dark wood) and mirrors from restoration in the next pic. there will be 18" between the two mirrors and 22" to each side.

mamabird, I can appreciate your (or is it DH's?) desire to have a white room to house that large stone fireplace. It sounds very good to me, in fact - a lovely Scandinavian-country look. I really like the idea of a nearly-white in that room - it won't look cold! not with that behemoth of a firebox in the room. LOL! If you like the White Dove for the woodwork, it looks good. For the walls, if you're amenable to other brands, I would suggest Farrow and Ball's "Strong White". I have this colour in my living and dining areas and it looks like cashmere on the walls - just regular undyed, cashmere. A definite white with a little bit grey, a bit green, a bit tan, but only enough to keep that white from being blinding. Strong White's my preference for your room. It will "go" with the white dove as well as with the tan of the stone. Another (set of) suggestions are from Donald Kaufman. I have DK-24 (in a bedroom) and I love it. It is basically a white with some green, blue and lilac / tan to it. I have it in north-facing room and it reads quite like a blue-green tinted white - once again just enough to knock the blindingness out of the white. This would be even more of a scandinavian-country touch to your room with the great big stone fireplace. Other nice whites from DK are DK-4,5 and 6 the last of which has a noticeable amount of green to it. So not a green colour per se, but a green-shaded White. Alternatively, if you're really bound for a deeper colour in the white-ish territory, I'd suggest F&B's Off-White or Shaded White. Both are gorgeous, definitely deeper colours but both also come across as whites-in-shade if you get what I mean ;-) And I think they'd go swimmingly well with that stone fireplace. Good luck. For what its worth, I support your paint-it-white vision as I think the look will look stellar in it with the fireplace.

" handymac, I'd appreciate it if you'd clarify your statements a bit more. Why do you think that "Using even a custom transition strip when the hard surface is higher than the carpet usually does not work well"? Do you mean that it becomes a trip hazard? Or is there another reason? Transition strips have to be stable---both sides have to have support. In the example above, the strip is supported by the hard surface, but will nor be supported by the carpet/pad sufficiently unless the strip compresses the carpet/pad quite a lot. That usually results in a squashed carpet look most folks do not like. By "So, you might wind up adding 3/4" to the carpeted areas just to get the heated floors in the baths" are you suggesting that we add underlayment before we re-carpet? If so, how do we address the differences at the stairs? Do we gradually raise the height of the top steps? I'd think we'd need to do something or else the top step will be 3/4" higher than all the others and that would be noticeable." Adding 3/4" under the carpet is what I meant. As for the stairs, I have seen a landing area(at the original floor height) done at the top of the stairs, maybe 4' by 3' and a transition strip used between the carpet and the landing area. Maybe solid surface flooring or vinyl tile. That minimizes the height difference at the top step and a 3/4" visual difference does not create a trip hazard.

Thanks, davidtay, I tweaked my plan per advice from a rep at my local lighting place (she knows her stuff, should have worked with her from the beginning). Her suggested can placement for the area without upper cabs is pretty much what you suggest. (see link to see my kitchen forums thread and the updated plan). As for a regular pattern, I've got that going, sort of. My sink to DW cab to fridge cab cans are in a MOL straight line, just at a diagonal from everything else. Can't be helped. A regular pattern would not be functional and I nearly always choose function over form. btw, I have no idea what you mean by disc lights. Are these like puck lights mounted on the ceiling, not in it? We'll have ceiling repair elsewhere so floating new texture is in the budget. A little more repair won't be a big deal. Plantation shutters do block a lot of light. It doesn't seem like you need much privacy. Interior mounted top down bottom up blinds would be great. Or roller shades to use only as needed if you think they could be up most of the time.

What would be really lovely for a sconce is something with a capiz shell shade and maybe a few lusters, in a kind of art deco feeling to go with the beading on the mirror. I've seen them but can't find them just now. The capiz shell ones are simple and classic. Unlike the extravagencies below. :D

But i'm not a matchy matchy person and would probably go with a different one with crystals.

Would you be relying on those sconces for your actual vanity lighting? Because I would need more light! Unless you expect the chandelier to provide a lot of light. A problem in bathrooms is getting good light that's "natural" appearing for skin tones, but not too much heat.
